I will mention your father-in-law when I approach Lord with my petitions.
Glad you have at least some news that he is starting to recover.

He WAS NOT driving too fast, that weather was AWEFUL and SUDDEN! And that spot on the road has evidently had several hydroplaning accidents.

Yeah, that hydroplaning can happen regardless of how good a driver you are. I had it happen to me once in college on a busy freeway. I was able to drive away from it, but when I called it in the dispatcher asked if it had just happened as they had 5 or 6 different accidents happening on the same stretch of freeway in less than two hours.

Immediately following the onset of a rainstorm the oil/grease and other slippery stuff deposited from passing cars will "float" out of the crevices of the paving surface making the road very slick (especally down the center of the lane) without all that much rainfall. It's those little flash storms and slow sprinkles that'll get you. This is when most folks think they are the least at risk and fail to slow down. Aquatreads won't save ya'.

JAC, you and Nate are lucky to have me around.
Hydroplane speed general rule of thumb:
11 times the square root of the tire pressure equals the speed at which a vehicle will hydroplane in MPH. Plus or minus 8%.

Car with 32 PSI in the tires:
11 X 32^0.5 = 62 MPH

Is this irrespctive of tire profile, EP?

Yes on cars, you see the heavier the car the more surface area touches the road,
To keep a car up With a skinnier tire it takes more tire presure. Pressure is in pounds per square inch so the less surface are you have the higher the air the pressure must be to keep the car from flattening the tires.
Therefore a care with skinny tires, with higher higher air pressure will hydroplane at higher speeds.
So the equation holds. It is independent of weight to a certian point which goes beyond care weights and typical tire profiles.
I don't know if it works for motorcycles but I think it would, however I believe the error would be mor than 8% more like 10 - 12%, but that is just a guess.
Make sense?

JAC this rule of thumb only appies to the manufactueres recomended PSI, if you go way over or under I falls apart.

Makes sense, EP. I have a tendencey to run straight to the extremes to evaluate an idea. What you are presenting is an engineering rule of thumb.

JAC, that shows an analytical mind. For example if you shoot a bullet in the air at a 45 degree angle i will go the farthest. Wrong the density of the air reqires the you shaloow the angle.
Take it to the extreme in your mind first. Imagine you are shooting your gun in Dippidy Doo then if you shoot at a 45 it's horizsontal distance is going to be less than if the shoot it parrallel to the horizon.
That is what you do first, which you did, but this is a bit more complicated and takes more thinking. Which if you had thought about it longer you would have said OK, I see.
