Nothing wrong with a rodeo...

Only rodeo I won't go to is the drive in Hollywood.

Gravatar You've seen the type of looks I get when riding around in 27 degree weather. They just don't understand.

Gravatar Simple ATF question: Keltec SU16 or Ruger Mini14, or both

Gravatar Well, Nate, I know it's not an ATF nite, but since you've deemed my Mini-14 one of the worst weapons ever produced, I thought I might show you my new purchase:

http://www.bushmaster.com/shoppi.../ bcwa3f16m4.asp

My daughter was over earlier, and took a picture with me holding it, with the TREO 680 I just got yesterday, but apparently I'm too stoopid to put it on my puter & send it. I've had it about two weeks, and put my Eotech sight on it. It's a honey, and I see what you meant.....now.

I'm already thinking about putting an H&K 416 upper on it though, soon as I can get my hands on one.

My best to you and your tribe,

Clay

But. I'm still keeping the Mini. I have a hard time getting rid of ANY firearm I've ever bought.

Gravatar That was timely. I guess you already know by now his opinion of the Mini-14

Gravatar musta missed the previous time it was topical - mayhap the keltec will fare better

Gravatar If I recall correctly, Lem, the Keltec has been talked about most favorably on this blog. But, I don't recall anyone saying they actually bought one.

Just not something I would look at, though.

It's Nate's blog, though...let him expound.

Gravatar Lem

SU-16 = Unbelievably awesome.

Mini=14 = Notorious Piece of Shit.

Gravatar Good to see ya Nate. Do you like my M-4?

Gravatar Mini=14 = Notorious Piece of Shit.

Unless custom built.

Funny, just saw a guy riding a BMW bike today...I hardly ever see 'em.
Ugly as hell though.

Gravatar badass Clay.

I knew you'd be throwing rocks at that mini if you ever got one.

Gravatar custom built mini-14? what's that... like a turd sculpture?

Gravatar And BTW, Lem. The Mini-14 is not a piece of shit. It's good out to 100 yards, probably one of the reasons the most popular model is called a Ranch Rifle. It never jams, but no, it won't hit within a two inch group at 100 yards consistently. Nate likes guns you can shoot from a bench rest at 2-500 yards, at least 1/2 MOA. He says a gunsmith would piss on it, but I've never needed to take mine to one. Why would I? I can break it down, clean it in ten minutes.

The secret to the the Mini-14 is the twist in the barrel, and the ammunition that works best for the twist. If I'm not mistaken, they started out with a 1:7 twist, went to a 1:10 twist, and all models since about 2000 have been made with a 1:9 twist, like most modern AR-15/M-16 models.

You have to match the grain of bullet to the twist, (and you can find that info on Ruger's Website) but, unless I'm mistaken, our soldiers in Iraq are all shooting a 1:9 twist, unless it's a sniper version. But, the 55 grain FMJ is the round of choice. Unfortunately, we have to abide by the Geneva Convention, which doesn't allow hollow points or soft points (dum-dums) I think we cheat, though. And that can affect the .223 grain you shoot.

NOW. That all being said.....I'd take my Bushmaster over my Mini-14 anyday. And I thank Nate for prodding me to upgrade by calling the Mini-14 a POS. But, I ain't throwing the 14 outta my gun safe.

Gravatar "Why would I? I can break it down, clean it in ten minutes."

I don't know... maybe you'd actually want it to put the bullet where you aimed?

and good out to 100 yards? Yeah... if you're shooting at a freaking barn.

nothing small enough to hurt with a .223 is gonna be big enough to hit a 100 yards with that piece of shit.

Gravatar Again, all I can say is, Nate....you must have shot some of the most shitty Mini-14's ever made. Who's did you shoot? Did they have any concept as to the twist differntials in the three differnet models made?

I will bet you $500 I can break a dinner plate five out of five shots at 100 yards any time you want with my i4. With only a 4x32 scope. You don't live that far from me. Bout 6 hours. Or, I can video it, and send it to you notarized...(best friend is a Notary Public)

Wanna bet?

Gravatar 1) How many shots do you get to break said plate?

2) How many shots out of 10 will break plates?

3) And since when did 10 inches at 100 yards become a decent measure of accuracy? Damn dude. This a rifle for crying out loud. I can hit a beer can at 100 yards with a freakin' Makarov.

Gravatar C'mon Nates....you were saying you couldn't hit the side of a barn with an Mini-14, earlier. But I understood that was an an axagerraation(your spelling

I'm saying, I can hit five seperate
small dinner plates with five shots. At 100 yards. That's a human torso.

I never said it was a head-shooter. It ain't made for 100 yards...maaybe 75. But, it's dependable, easy to clean, ( well, it dose ake sme effort, but no more an the M-1 garaand), you can treat it like shit, & it'll still shoot.

It's a short-range rifle, and that's all is was meant to be.

You never did tell me if you liked my Bushmaster, and you actually talked me into getting it.

I love that gun, and the Mini-4 has slid back a notch in my gun safe.

AND....how many shots you get with that Makarov at the beer can at 100yds? I'll send my Notary Public guy up there

Gravatar Lord, looking back, I must have had an aneurysm in those parentheses.

Gravatar now don't wad up your panties. I said, "badass Clay". I was talkin' about your new addition.

cain't go wrong with bushmaster.

As for the challenge.. in addition to your notary I'd need a makarov. JAC sold his. He and I have both made that shot. Gimmie a tried and true Makarov and I'll hit the can in the first 3 shots.

Our buddy rusty will hit the can damned near every time.

As for the accuracy of the mini... if you apply the triangle theory of center mass... then no... its not bigger than a dinner plate.

If you want to stop an armed threat with a .223 you need a heart shot, or a head shot. The mini 14 is not capable of that accuracy reliably.

Breaking a plate at 100 yards is great if you're shooting a pistol. If you're shooting a rifle... its nothing.

1 moa is the bare minimum for acceptable accuracy in a bolt action rifle. I can maybe go 2 or 3 moa on a rough and ready semi. but 6 or 8? That's just a joke.

Gravatar Naah, my panties are in no wad......well, no more than usual. That's why I wear Only Hemp-mades

Three shots at a B-can at 100 yards? I'll give ya that. Is that free-hand?

( sorry, my NP makes me ask these type questions)

And thanks for the the kudos on the Bushmaster.

That Makarov is a what millimeter/caliber?

Gravatar jac's was 9x17. Julie had a bersa .380 that was just as accurate... maybe more.

Those shots were taken standing.

1911 would work too.

Gravatar Ya know, I guess I never had the cause to shoot a person, and I'm glad I haven't, but I have dropped deer in the 300 to 375 yard range. It wasn't so much good shooting, as it was a good rifle, and excellent optics, sighted-in before. AND a rest. It's only a
matter of being steady, and being cognizant of the weapon's trigger pull.

BESIDES the 30.06...what would you choose if you hunted "small game prey"?

Gravatar Daamn! I gotta Bersa .380, which is my "car carry" gun..I didn't know it would get out that far!!!

I love that gun, but I don't think I ever even tried to shoot it over 50 ft!

Gravatar just have to pay attention to the bullet drop... which at 100 yards... is considerable.

Remember... I didn't say it would really damage the can. Just that it would hit it.

Gravatar I told you I got that Taurus 1911, but you gotta admit...auto pistols are made for 25 yards or less. T

They're your last resort. Any further threats beyond 75 feet are for combat rifles.

Gravatar Really, I want to know....with that Bersa, how far would you be aiming over at the target 100 ydss????

Gravatar not that far... depending on altitude and ambient temperature and your load... say between 4 and 8 inches.

At sealevel and 59 degrees an average factory load with a 95 grain bullet will be 0'd at 25 yards and will drop 1.7 inches at 50 yards.

But yes. You're absolutely correct about the effectiveness of pistols with respect to range. But we arent talking about effectiveness. We're talking about accuracy.

I only brought up the pistols to demonstrate just how shitty the mini14 is. Its less accurate on average than a pistol with a 3.75 inch barrel for crying out loud.

Gravatar BESIDES the 30.06...what would you choose if you hunted "small game prey"?

Hrm...

Define small game. Squirrels? I use a modified ruger 10/22. I also have a model 94 in 22mag.

for varmints and such I prefer to simply roll with a .308 or a .223.

Dogs and such... coyotes... I'd probably grab a .308 or my lever .44

Gravatar OK Nate, I just reviewed a gun for your ARF Picture included, off of moms, chair.
