I'm kind of a beer and wine snob. Would rather go thirsty than drink a Budweiser or some crappy box wine. But I don't know squat about liquor.
So what are the preferred ways to serve a good bourbon?

I don't think vodka drinking has anything to do with the feminization of men - not guys who drink vodka straight at least. If you add juices and frothy mixers though, then you probably lack sac.
Bourbon only mixes well with egg nog and Coke. I mostly drink it straight, or over ice. I don't care if purists yell about how ice ruins bourbon, I drink it how I like.
OT - you have convinced me maybe I should look at buying a bike. What's a good starter bike for an old dude? I don't give a shit for offroading or any of that, I want to cruise the back roads of Texas. It needs to be something that I can sit upright and ride, I would look like a jerkoff hunched over a Ninja. I probably also will be buying something used. Suggestions?

Good post Nate. Can't stand vodka myself. I have developed a fondness recently for bourbon though.
OT: I know its not an ATF post, but I heard an ad for a local gunshop that was advertising something called a rat gun. What on earth is a rat gun, and why does one need one?
Sorry for the lame question, but I do read your ATF posts and enjoy them very much. But this is the first time I have had a question and could join in. And yes, I do definitely support the second amendment. Hubby is an NRA lifetime member.

Crom,
What you're looking for is called a standard.
You don't want a cruiser. You don't sit up on cruisers... you actually hunch on them the same way you do on a sport bike... you're just rotated back on your butt and your legs are straight.
No one looks more idiotic than a man riding a cruiser... sitting their like he's waiting for an OB/Gyn to shove a speculum up his ass.
JAC and I will come up with a good list of standards here in a bit.

Nate, you might want to verify the "everybody rotates stock" thing.
I'm pretty sure at least some of the big boys in Bourbon don't. They just blend the barrels to average the difference to spare the expense.
That reminds me, I'm out of Makers and low on Bookers (this bottle is VERY spicy!).
And try Żubrówka before you knock vodka entirely. Very tasty stuff straight at room temp.
I do try and keep normal vodka on hand and in the freezer for straight drinking and mixing. Authentic grenadine and vodka is very nice as is cranberry and vodka (Cape Codder).

Nate on cruisers. Ha!
What always cracks me up are the Harley riders. They always have a concerned look on their face, like they've spent the last 6 months unsuccessfully looking for their viagra. But whenever they see another Harley they have to give a low wave. Like, "Hey man, you find any? I'm still looking too. Love you. Bye."

Who are referring to as "big boys"? Jim Beam does.. Austin Nichols (wild turkey) does... Jack Daniels does.
I mean call me a fool but I don't consider Evan Williams one of the "big boys".

Crom,
While you are givin' Nate props for badmouthing cruisers keep in mind 50% of his stable is in cruisers. Yes, his big brother tried to talk sense to him, but do little brothers listen?
How tall are ya' Crom? Got a gut? There are some nice sport-tourers that are ergonomically correct and carry serious power, speed, and handling, (read:fun) but a gut will prohibit their consideration.

I am looking to keep the price ceiling on this around $3-5K for the bike and gear, and I have no problem with used bikes if they are in good shape. When I get better at riding I will consider something bigger and more expensive.
"Standard" sounds like what I might be looking for, I am a pretty big dude - 6"1 and 250+ so I want to sit upright, even lean back if I get the notion. I can't imagine hunching over a bike, ass waving in the air, from Galveston to Cookesville without getting a permanent kink in my back.

In that price range I would take a long hard look at a Suzuki Vstrom 1000 or 650, or Bandit... or another option may be the Kawasaki ZRX.
JAC may have some suggestions as well.

no offense old man but when it comes to bourbon you simply have no credibility here.
Look at the audiance.
They read my writings on this subject for the better part of a decade. I've made recommendations to them... and they've taken my advice and been well rewarded.
You on the other hand... hiss from the cheap seats.

Most of 'em were drinkin' scotch! Give a man whose been survivin' by drinkin' his own piss a glass of water and he'll think you gave him nectar of the gods.
The young and feeble minded are easily impressed by the high dollar marketing campaigns like Makers and Harley-Davidson. Makers is just OK.
The best bourbon is made not 10 miles from here. From WT101 right on up to Russel's.
I'll give you some more time so you can forget I told you and then we'll pretend you thought of it first.

JAC, you can keep the WT101. I'll take the Makers anyday. WT has no flavor in comparison.
Bookers is hands down the best Bourbon I've tried yet. Straight or with a tiny splash of water... always good stuff.
Knob Creek, Basil Haden and Bakers are pretty good but for my money, I'll stick with the Makers.
I didn't like the Eagle Rare, normal WT, WT101 or Sazurac Rye.
I don't think I've tried the Russell's.
I keep meaning to try Blanton's, 1792 and a few others.
There's an amazing 21 year rye (can't remember the name, it's a tiny Kentucky distillery), but it's $70 a bottle. $48 for Bookers (when not on sale) is bad enough. But remembering that flavour keeps giving me the itch to get it.

Maybe I should restate my vodka statement. It's not that I hate the flavor or anything like that, it's like I'm allergic to the way its made or something. Last time I tried the stuff, I bloated up like a puffer fish for 4 days.
Wild Turkey is nasty stuff. Some of the other brands are ok to this bourbon novice though.

1792 is among my favorites, Russell's is my new infatuation thanks to Nate's advice, and I've found that Makers, good in its own right, is really the perfect bourbon for introducing people to the drink.
It's the gateway bourbon.

Finally I gave it to a bunch of mexican transients.

Nate: "Took one sip... nearly gave a technicolor yawn"
Yeah, see, you can't just jump into the good stuff like that. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up.
First, you start with bourbon.
Next, comes the turpentine (close, Huck, but you were on the wrong end of the spectrum).
Then, the gasoline/diesel/JP-4 sequence.
Next, in order: antifreeze, rye, Canadian whisky, Irish whiskey, and finally, Scotch.
You've now climbed up the ladder and should be able to hold your guts in like a man. If it's still too difficult, go back to your Corona.
Wimp.

The problem with Grenadine is that virtually no one has ever tried it. Almost all of it you find is fake crap. Like the "Maraschino cherries", there's nothing but the name in common with the real thing.
Real Grenadine is made from real pomegranites and it usually costs $6 for a small bottle. But it's night and day compared with the typical sugar syrup with Red Dye #0561564AQ you get in the supermarket.

Blue drinks always have me looking for the tidybowl man and his little dingy. Don't know how anyone can stand that stuff. Especially after drinking good liquor.
MM, I went on line after reading your comment about maraschino cherries. Couldn't find any real ones for sale, but did find some interesting recipes for making your own though. As for the pomegranite juice, did you check the juice aisle of the store instead of the mixers aisle? We have a nice pomegranite concentrate available in my area that is quite tasty. Doesn't cost $6 a bottle either.
Sorry about the comment length Nate.
