I ain't sellin nothin yet.

You ever tried explaining inflation and the declining value of the dollar to people? They look at you like you're from another planet. After all, a dollar is a dollar right? It still says $1 on the bill.

Also, something I read a while back talked about the price of gas in 1964, it was around $.25/gal. Quarters were made of silver back then. Now go to www.coinflation.com and look at the current silver value in a 1964 quarter. As of today it's $3.30, pretty close to the avg. price of gas according to www.fuelgaugereport.com

Just another way of illustrating the point.

It's very illustrative to live elsewhere where the gas has stayed at basically the same price with very little inflation over the past several years.

Gravatar I saw a similar comparison at lewrockwell.com recently that made the distinction between our dollar and the Polish currency. Since 2006, the Polish price has been pretty consistent, while ours has grown over 30%.

Yep, trying to explain that to folks is like beating your head on the wall.

Gravatar They've been told inflation comes from everything BUT an increase in the money supply.

The fed does an amazing job of ignoring the 2000lb gorilla in the room.

Gravatar The fed does an amazing job of ignoring the 2000lb gorilla in the room.

The public schools help 'em hide it.

Gravatar I'm gonna ruin and make Nate's day at the same time.

Today I'm taking another gold eagle from my horde to the friendly local coin dealer and cashing out...violating the first rule of hordeing gold - never sell.

[Nate frowns]

I'm also taking my mini-14 down to the gun store where its going up for sale on consignment. I should get back about what I paid for it six or seven years ago. It works fine, but I've never been totally happy with it.

[Nate smiles]

How, what to do with that wad of worthless paper? Answer: Sig 556. Possibly with an ACOG sight if I can keep my accountant and financial 'minder' (Mrs. PORCUS) in the dark.

Long story short; I was perusing a local gun shop during my lunch break (as is my wont) and got to hold one. She was hefty (in a pleasent way) and had a very 'professional' feel.

All I could think is 'I'm in love'.

Gravatar PORCUS, Guns are never a bad investment.

Gravatar Seems like I read somewhere that we get 85% of our oil from Canada and Venezuela, and only 15% from the rags.

I've been reading BTP - how do you get hold of a HK91 - or is there a modern version that's better or worse? I'd greatly appreciate your opinion(s).

Gravatar Look, I hate to interrup the thread with ramblings about gun-lust, but it IS Friday. I've already posted my thoughts over at Astro's about how vodka is for wimmin.

I'm in full ATF mode and its not even noon. Perhaps I have a problem.

Gravatar Pack a lunch boys, it's gonna get rough for a while...

Gravatar Nate: "It shows the price of oil as measured in gold... vs the price of gold as measured in dollars."

Errata: Shouldn't that be ...vs the price of oil as measured in dollars?

Gravatar dammit... correct WB... its the price of oil in Gold vs. the price of oil in Dollars.

thanks.

Gravatar Which configuration of the 556 Porcus? 16 inch barrel?

Gravatar "Which configuration of the 556"

The version I handled was the plain-Jane 16".

There's a more expensive SWAT version; but I don't like short-short rifles with vertical grips, big flashlights, and other fru-fru hanging off the front end. I'm not planning on busting in doors and terrorizing civilians in my neato state-issue ninja suit. I'm looking for a reliable all purpose SHTF gun that shoots, uh, ammo that's 'easily obtainable' in a SHTF scenario.

The 556 was definitely heavy compared to an M-4 clone, but that adds (in my opinion) to the 'real gun' feel. At any rate, I wasn't put off by the weight.

More than anything else, its a Sig product...and I love Sigs.

To top it off, I also think it looks super badass. Just my opinion, of course.

Gravatar Barbarian: "Seems like I read somewhere that we get 85% of our oil from Canada and Venezuela, and only 15% from the rags."

According to the Feds: out of the top 15 nations exporting oil to the US, the "rags" (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait; 1% more if you add Algeria) have provided 30% for 2008 YTD. For 2007, it was only 22%.

For '08 YTD, Canada (top exporter) and Venezuala (#5) have only provided 31% of our imported oil; 32% in '07. Both Mexico and Nigeria provide more oil than Venezuala does.

Gravatar P.S. - it also take standard M-16 mags. I always found the mini-14 mags to be unreliable.

Besides, like I said, its not a bad idea to use a gun that will shoot Uncle Sams bullets and takes his mags too.

Gravatar Sorry, those YTD numbers are only through Feb 2008.

Gravatar PORCUS, Guns are never a bad investment.

Especially since their price increase hasn't kept up with inflation. They're bargains in more ways that one...

Gravatar Never under-estimate the "it looks badass" variable.

Many weapons are purchaced on that factor.

Gravatar A rifle with the AK operating system, designed and built by the Swiss...

Don't see how a fella could go wrong there.

Nice choice, Porcus.

Gravatar Sig 556: Do I make you horny baby?

Me: Ohhhhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh, come to papa... come to papa! You know what I like, baby!

Though I must say I like the SWAT version a little more than the barebones version. It just needs a laser sight to top off the badassedness (cool word, huh?).

Gravatar laser sights are a bad idea.

Gravatar Since the topic has already slid over to guns...(and when doesn't it?)...Empty Holster Protest next week.

Josh, I thought this might especially be of interest to you?

One statistic quoted in the article I found quite interesting: Numerous studies* by independent researchers and state agencies show that concealed handgun license holders are five times less likely than non-license holders to be arrested for violent crimes.

Gravatar RE: Never under-estimate the "it looks badass" variable.

I see it as part of the gun's function. In a post-Katrina or zombie apocolypse kinda scenario; I feel like the 556 would lend me some 'gravitas'.

Lets face it: I'm 5'9" (ish), balding, pudgy, nearsighted, and slow. And I ain't much on snappy comebacks, either.

I'll take the help.

Gravatar Actually I believe if you're looking for "gravitas" you should be seeking out a Barrett.

Gravatar laser sights are a bad idea.

Why do you say this?

Gravatar "Actually I believe if you're looking for "gravitas" you should be seeking out a Barrett"

That's big BIG $ there. I wonder if my lazy butt could drag one of those monsters a whole city block.

Then again, why move when you can control the turf a thousand yards in any direction?

"When all else fails, vote from the rooftop."

Gravatar "Why do you say this?"

It works both ways...much like any light... it gives away your position.

Gravatar You guys are making me want a 5.56.

Gravatar Athor,
if you are thinking about it... I highly recommend the Keltec SU-16. The little weapon has no business being as accurate as it is.

Gravatar Nate,

From where did you pull this fascinating data on oil?

Gravatar Cardinal... do a google search. Its easy to come by.

Gravatar "When all else fails, vote from the rooftop."

Yep:

Gravatar laser sights are a bad idea.
Nate | Homepage | 04.18.08 - 1:24 pm

Are you attempting to assert that they don't make a badassed weapon look even more evil?

Plus, they're good for a few things besides cosmetics.

Gravatar "Gravitas" post-hurricane is a 12 ga riot gun and a bandoleer of 00 buck over your shoulder.

Anybody have an Ultra 87? The price is right, but I'm wondering how sturdy the fiber-optic rifle sights are. Also, the gun shop at the range where I shoot has a IAC 982 (870 clone) with ghost ring sights for $219 http://www.iacshotguns.com/982pump.html

Gravatar "Gravitas" post-hurricane is a 12 ga riot gun and a bandoleer of 00 buck over your shoulder.

Pffffft. Gravitas is a head on a pike.

Gravatar A pike?

Sissy.

In your hand or hanging from your BELT.

Gravatar Belt? Sorry, I'm not tacticool.

Gravatar Seriously doods. Either way works.

Gravatar I've always thought that setting yourself up on your porch with a M249 is pretty gravitas

Gravatar Ahem...getting back to the gas prices... I think I'm going to cry. A woman on talk radio today was saying she normally votes Rep, but was leaning Dem this year and she didn't care who Obama's pastor was she just wanted to know what he was going to do about the gas prices. God this country needs a revolution.

Gravatar God this country needs a revolution.

The people don't want a revolution.

Gravatar Never under-estimate the "it looks badass" variable.
Many weapons are purchaced on that factor.

On that note I'd like a Steyr TMP. Or at least an MP9. My brother suggested "going on safari" to get ahold of one.

Gravatar You're right about that, Josh.
