Sounds like you made a good decision... ya big softy.

Gravatar "WWND"? I think God needs to work on your humility a little more.

Gravatar I didn't say it! A commentor did!

Gravatar Glad you had fun. Nothing clears the head like getting away somewhere wild for a while. You're making me jealous...

Gravatar Its hard country Wendy... bears... lots of big deer... eagles... elk... its awesome.

Gravatar You've got elk? In Tennessee? You wouldn't be yanking young Wendy's chain, now wouldja?

Gravatar "In its recovering forests, the outdoor enthusiast will find 600 miles of multi-use trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and offroad vehicles (ORVs). The Royal Blue Wildlife Management Area is also home to one of the only herds of elk in the East, the product of an active restoration effort begun in 1997. In addition to elk, the sportsman and wildlife watcher can encounter healthy populations of whitetail deer, wild turkey and beaver."

Well, I'll be damned. Never heard of such.

Gravatar 600 miles is a gross under-estimate. Many, if not most, of the trails aren't on the maps.

Gravatar Kentucky brought in a bunch of Elk in a repopulation effort back in the 90's. Bein' generally intelligent creatures... most of them came south to Tennessee.

Tennessee wildlife saw this and decided to take advantage of it with a relocation effort of its own.

Gravatar Apparently, they must be doing pretty well....I found this article about the possibility of them allowing five bulls to be culled from the herd during the 2007 hunting season...the five permits selected by lottery.

Couldn't tell if they decided to allow it, though.

Gravatar poaching is ill-adviced. They have a locator tag on every single one of them.

Up in KY they found one in a fella's freezer.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they just shot him on the spot. No trial or nuthin'.

Gravatar Have you ever seen one of those "robotic" deer they use to catch people spot-lighting deer at night? It'll move it's head up & down, side to side, and shake it's tail. They put it out in a field in an area where they've had reports of spot-lighting (which is the same as poaching in Miss.), and stake it out. Soon as they take the shot, they nab 'em.

I know a guy who is a game warden, and I've seen his "Bambi". Damn thing was fulla holes. That's some dangerous business, he's been shot at twice.

I think they execute those guys too.

Gravatar Oh, I forgot...it's eyes shine just like a deer's, too.

Gravatar bitches.

Gravatar "WWND"? I think God needs to work on your humility a little more.

Nah What Would Nancy Do, or Who Would Nancy Do isn't all that prideful.

Gravatar Did you find your Viagra, Nate? Get that man flag up. And I wasn't worried about it being me I am twice man JAC is an 10^18 time more than you. Ha!

Gravatar Dude... Men don't own Mini-14s.

Gravatar Glad ya'll had fun, Nate.

Gravatar big times EP.. Big Times. You'd a laughed your butt of at me for droppin' the KLX in a mud hole.

Hit a tree that was buried way down deep... got the wheels off track just enough... splat!

Gravatar My dad ran off into abrair patch once al all we had were bandaids with mickey mouses picture on them, he rode the rest of the day looking like an advert for Disney, now that was funny.

Falling down is cool, you never know what you can do until you fall down trying.

Gravatar The ol' boy had a "Bad Day"on Saturday afternoon, EP. When we finally got him off that hill we parked the bikes back at camp. Nate turned to walk away from his and it fell right at his feet. I didn't laugh. I swear I didn't.

Sunday went much smoother. We even worked up to a few pretty stiff descents.

Ol' SwampThing has a bit more trail time than the Half Pint Beastie (Little Green, we call it.) and so managed to stay up on two wheels the entire trip.

Sold that DRZ yet EP?

Gravatar Not to mention... swampthing never crosses the 10mph barrier.

Gravatar He's getting old Nate, cut him some slack.

I haven't yet, but got a few people looking at it, and they are trying to get me down on the price. Now way, I really hate to sell that beutifull machine.

Gravatar That's 10mph faster than "0h shit!".

Ol' Swampy flat dished out the humble pie, I reckon.

" Poor soul, you were just too high strung. "

Gravatar amazing... in the same string of comments I got one guy talkin' about my eatin' humble pie... and others proclaim more humilty is needed.

Typical.

Gravatar You've got elk? In Tennessee? You wouldn't be yanking young Wendy's chain, now wouldja?
Clay | 05.30.07 - 4:38 pm | #

Nate could yank my chain on an awful lot on topics like guns and stuff, but I majored in Bio. I believe him. There have been fairly widespread efforts by State DNRs and private individuals to reintroduce elk. Michigan has its own areas where reintroduced elk may be found.

It's been quite a while since I've been far enough away from a city to see anything interesting, and whitetails don't count because they're all over the place in the suburbs. Turkey are really coming back too. I've seen them around also.

Gravatar Give 'em hell Wendy

Gravatar " Poor soul, you were just too high strung. "

Good movie JAC, but one thing I have learned it is them High strung SOB's' that become the best off road riders.

I got a cousin who baled off a 50 ft cliff on the Red, that high strung little shit. After he got down to the bottom, and he did without falling, I yelled down, "Did you think about getting back up before you did that?"

Needless to say it took 4 of us to get that sucker out of the river after he tried to ride it up about a half dozen times. That was a good day, the same day dad had to wear the Mickey Mouse band aids. Fun all around.

Gravatar Here is my cousin Steven who was coming out of a 25 ft ditch that was all most straight up on my 1974 Honda XL 350 after I told him he couldn't traverse it and offered him my bike. Plenty of velocity left, that's for sure.

http://thumbsnap.com/v/Tc5siuZd.jpg

Gravatar By the way, I'll never sell that bike.

Gravatar Sorry, Nate it was really more like..... Mud Pie.

Gravatar Careful old man... or I'll have to tell them about how much time I spent waitin' on your slow ass.

Like that time on that gravel road.. when I parked the bike... took my gear off... found a spot to piss... actually pissed... zipped up... stood around... and finally saw ya ride up.

Gravatar EP... that's badass.

Maybe you could get an ATV? surely you can still ride one of those. Plenty of fun left to be had out there partner.

Gravatar "Michigan has its own areas where reintroduced elk may be found."

There not reintroduced, Michigan has had elk. A little known fact is that up until about 1910 one of the best places in the world to hunt elk was Elk Hart Ind. Thats were Teddy Roosevelt took dignitaries to hunt.

If I get a chance to get some elk pictures this next weekend I'll post em. Today I saw a baby newborn antelope not more than a few hours old. He was literally still wet behind the ears.

The deer and elk should be dropping their fawns real soon too.

Gravatar Yes... this is the same michigan that was denied statehood for years based on the fact that it was a God Forsaken wasteland... with nothing to offer but a larger than normal breed of misquito.

Its a damned same we didn't heed the advice of old and avoid the introduction of the state of michigan all together.

Then again.. what would we do without all those asshole yankees and potholes? Lord knows america couldn't survive without Michigan Lefts or Eminem... and who knows what the absence of Detroit would do to the national Crime Rate.

Michigan's better than Ohio I suppose.. but only barely.

Gravatar "and finally saw ya ride up."

The key word being "ride", Junior.

How long you figure I would have been waiting on you had I not come back to help you pick up that little scooter you dropped in the mud?

Anything outa digger on his bike search?

Gravatar I'll figure out some way to blame that drop on you eventually...

As for Digger... I ain't heard nuthin'.

Gravatar "There not reintroduced, Michigan has had elk. A little known fact is that up until about 1910 one of the best places in the world to hunt elk was Elk Hart Ind. Thats were Teddy Roosevelt took dignitaries to hunt."

According to my source: "Elk have been introduced by private individuals and by conservation departments in several localities since 1909. The original elk are all gone." I wonder which border he was talking about? MI was forced to give up a chunk of the southern part and was given the upper peninsula in exchange. I can't remember what year that took place, but we might both be right depending on what border is considered, seeing how Elkhart would at one time have been part of MI (or at least close enough). Meh.

Please do post some pics of some fawns.

Gravatar Today I saw a baby newborn antelope not more than a few hours old. He was literally still wet behind the ears.

awww..

we're getting the wild turkeys, too. I never even heard of them being around, until a few years ago at my grandparents I saw two, then a couple years we had like seven or eight of them coming by the house once every couple days, and just this year I saw one on the road, and have been seeing their tracks in the snow.

I have a 2006 nature calendar that says this under the Wild Turkey picture:

When the wild turkey had virtually disappeared from North America, Pennsylvania housed one of the few remaining pockets of birds. The capture and relocation of birds from these flocks began the remarkable widespread restoration of wild turkeys in America.

Gravatar Then again.. what would we do without all those asshole yankees and potholes? Lord knows america couldn't survive without Michigan Lefts or Eminem... and who knows what the absence of Detroit would do to the national Crime Rate.

Nate | Homepage | 05.31.07 - 12:05 am | #

Michigan is better than Ohio. No *^%# turnpikes.

Take out Detoit and suburbs (Eminem lives in the cushy area now that he's rich) and all you have left on your list is a few potholes. Ann Arbor is just beyond belief. I have never been in a more self-absorbed, politically-correct-and-proud-of-it city. I dislike UofM anyway, but that put the icing on the cake.

I grew up in WA State - where the hippies and yuppies from CA have taken over. I will say this: God forsaken lands have a lower population density than the norm. :D

Gravatar Crystal... I have no idea who wrote that wild turkeies were almost non existant in North America... but clearly the author was an idiot.

Turkies are like vermin in the south.

Gravatar They're abundant here in IN too.

Gravatar I had heard that turkeys were hunted down to very small populations, and then allowed to come back by regulating hunting seasons. It is the same with Canada geese, which have made a similar comeback. They are now considered vermin by many here. I remember when there were very few geese here, and know some people who helped get them re-established. Now we have a 4 month hunting season and pretty liberal bag limits.

Turkeys are just now being introduced in my area now. I'm not sure if they were native to this area before it was settled.

Gravatar The geese are year-round here and protected full-time. They are beyond annoying.

I wish there was a baseball bat hunting season for them. I'd go to town big time.

Gravatar In Maryland we have a "welfare goose" season, it's for geese that have stayed past the normal migration period. I believe the daily bag limit is 10, no season limit. The geese tend to drive out the nicer species, like wood ducks and teals, and they pollute worse than Union Carbide.

We have more wild turkey than you can shake a stick at, but I don't believe they do near the damage of geese and deer.

Gravatar "pollute worse than Union Carbide"

LOL. We're showing our gray.

Gravatar I love hunting geese, so I don't mind, but they do a lot of crop damage. Deer do too, but they do a lot more vehicle damage.

Gravatar Wendy,

There have always been a small number of elk in the Indian River, Atlanta, Millersburg area. My mothers side of the family has been poaching them for well over 100 years. The first elk I ever had was one that "accidentally" got shot several years ago.

In recent years there has been a effort to reintroduce rocky mountain elk to improve the breed and boost numbers.

For the record all my elk hunting is strictly legal. Should I draw my coveted area tag I'll be a happy camper. If not I'll just spend a week chasing around the mountain with my buddies like I do most years.

Nate has it wrong, there is only about 8 million things wrong with Michigan, most all of those live south of I96. If you could get rid of them, and make a few other changes it would be a great state. A guy that moves to WV has lost his creditability when it comes to complaining about other states.

Gravatar For the record all my elk hunting is strictly legal.

Ya, how about off the record?

Honest, Judge, she said she was 18, and don't she look it?!

Gravatar Off the record too.

And she was 18.
