"IPhone Usuck"
Now that's a clever headline.
Don't you know that Steve Jobs PERSONALLY designed that phone!? It's perfect! Anything that the uber-geek Jobs touches is PERFECT! THERE WILL BE NO DISSENT!! RESPECT MY AUTHORATY!

actually most of the review are overwhelmingly positive. The touch screen is a huge leap and the phone is well designed. Edge is 2.5g but most places don't have 3g yet. Itunes? I don't mind it. I use it for my music here. The reviews show it just about matches all claims of batterylife and if you listen to the latest twit for the most part they like it as well.

Mayor Street of Philadelphia stood in line all day waiting to get one. People complained about the waste of tax dollars having him stand there but I think he did less damage that day.
He spun some bullsh*t story about how "it's not just a phone, it's a communication device" he needs to keep in touch with his people blah blah blah. As if Blackberries and Treo etc. haven't existed for 10 years...
I'll wait a few months at least for all of the first release bugs to shake out (and probably never buy one anyway- go RAZR version 1!!!).

If the iPhone works like Apple's computers, I don't want one. They look slick, but still constantly quit the application you are using due to a Type 1 error. AAARRRGGG!

$599 seems like a low price to pay to be considered cool. At least for some people. Now, $599 can buy lots of stuff more cooler than an iphone.
I thought about getting two to sell on Ebay, what with the price on the Ebay market being $1500 per, but camping outside an apple store with the birkenstock-wearing, Volkswagen-driving, latte-sipping, ipod-listening, wannabe x-gen yuppies does not appeal to me.

Most people seem to like their choices made for them. Hence, the continued existence of Apple. These people are finally excited that their scary old phones, that were theoretically as capable now come loaded with all this Apple software. Of course, it won't play nice with other apps. But who needs other apps, when Apple can tell you what you want?

And the review says "Get with the fucking program..."
What is the fucking point of that statement? I guess he's just too fucking hip for me. I suppose there are some stupid, square fucking people that think that useless fucking interjections add a certain fucking hipness and only really fucking old people and people that are so fucking square that they woldn't read his fucking review anyway are going to raise a fucking eyebrow at his off-fucking-handed casualness.

you don't read very well, do you?
here's what tycho wrote:
"My old phone, one based on Windows Mobile 5.0, had almost every feature the iPhone has - point by point. The differences between the products (like the differences between their desktop cousins) have to do with how functionality is exposed to the user. In this matter, you'll find that Apple's product is almost infuriatingly superior."
what you read:
"he concludes its unbelievably awesome... because its pretty and says apple on it."
here's what *i* concluded:

"functionality exposed to the user".

Here's an idea... how about someone tells me how it sounds on a call? How long does the battery last? Talk time anyone? How well does it hold a signal? You know... How does it freakin' perform?
dang right,
My cellphone is 5 years old and I have no complaints. The battery lasts all week, it gets a signal everywhere, and it's screen is easy to navigate with BUTTONS, no stupid touch screen.
I'd prefer the Motorola SKPL be released in the states any day over the iPhone.
Apple is truly a totalitarian company.
Can I build one to run your OS?
Nine, zis iz not permissible
So I'm stuck with your overpriced limited models?
You vil do as ve zay!

"functionality exposed to the user".
I'm no Apple apologist, but UI matters. IF it's got all the same functionality and a vastly superior UI, it's better... Unless you're just proud of doing things the hard way, which wouldn't surprise me.
All that being said, I don't have any Apple products (software or hardware), and I'm not about to start.

The UI is a touchscreen. The same kind of touchscreen that's been in use for over a decade on various handheld devices.
There is nothing radicly new bout this UI. Its just pretty.
Look at what people are excited about. The average person standing in line. They're a bunch of dumbasses that say things like, "Its not a phone, its a communication device." (direct quote from the Philly Mayor, who was just one of the idiots standing in line)
What that shows is, these morons have no idea that smart phones have been around for years.

I would say that the UI does make a difference in ease of use, but personally, I couldnt care less. I carry a PHONE. Not a mini game player, not a music player (altho that might be nice) And there is not a snowballs chance in hell I am going to pay a full weeks pay for a phone and then have to pay about 100 a month just for service! Plus it doesn't travel well. If you go to europe (which I never do but still...) it isn't going to work properly.
And you asked about battery life? 24 hours. My phone had BETTER last longer than that. I have one day out of every week (my Saturday into Sunday) that is a little longer than 24 hours and my phone had better be working the whole time.

My phone battery needs to last a week - minimum, and it needs to have a clock and an alarm clock built-in, and have a volume control on the ringer. Other than that, it needs to switch between GSM and CDMA seamlessly. And that's about all I want it to do. A SIM card is nice, but not necessary.
Once I'm past the clock features, maybe either a calculator and/or currency converter would be a bonus, and then I'd want it to be waterproof, shock-proof, and easy to carry, and impossible to accidentally hit buttons on it while it's in my pocket.
I DO NOT want a phone that takes pictures or video - having these "features" instantly disqualifies the phone from my selection. I really don't want a color display but I can live with one if I have to, it'll give me something to complain about. And I'm shocked that people actually want games on their phone. I can see why people would want to play music (or audio-books) with their phone, but I'm not interested if there's a battery penalty.
And anything big enough to use for e-mail is too big to walk around with. I'd rather have a smallish tablet PC, or large PDA, that I can keep in my luggage. My phone needs to be small, and I don't want to cry if I lose it or break it. This Apple thing is the exact antithesis of what I want in a phone.

"What that shows is, these morons have no idea that smart phones have been around for years."
Exactly. In any case, all I want from a mobile phone is the "phone* function, along with a database of people's numbers. Everything else is on my computer, where I prefer it. I don't want a phone that I need a bloody pilots license to fly...

One feature that all phones now have that I would really like to not have is GPS. I really don't want to be tracked.
Don't think they do that? There was a murder here a couple weeks ago. Cops found the guy because "they were informed that he was still making phone calls in the area" Cops found him in car. A good outcome on this instance, but it means that we are all being tracked and when in a city, tracked very closely.

Erik,
Being tracked has zero bearing on whether or not the phone has a GPS. If your phone is turned on, you can be tracked - period. Your phone "handshakes" with the towers every so often, thus broadcasting it's position. If you're talking on your phone, it's super easy to track and the equipment to track it is cheap and widely available (provided you work for the government in some approved capacity - such as Search And Rescue). The equipment needed to track a particular phone that is not in active use is far more complex and expensive, and still requires a good phone "footprint" - which is an electronic signature of the phone while it's in use.
This is why High Value Target individuals usually use cell phones one time and discard them, if they use cell phones at all.
