Gravatar Yeah, the house my buddies and I rented in college was haunted by the ghost of an old woman.
Nothing ever happened except we used to see her crossing from one end of our dining room-turned-bar to the other sometimes, dressed in a blue bath robe, walking with a cane, and she never paid us any mind.
Made the dogs bark something fierce, but otherwise no harm no foul.
Also, my grandmother swore my dead grandfather played tricks on her sometimes, moving things around on her and whatnot.

Gravatar devils

and no, not really

Gravatar Yes, the ghosts of our forefathers comes by nightly and tells me what a lazy f--k i am.

Gravatar ha!

Gravatar I've read this blog for a long time but never posted a comment. But yeah, I grew up in Louisiana, where everyone and his mama has seen a ghost.

Gravatar I have no idea what it was that I saw.

Whether it was corporeal or whether it was something else, I don't know.

What I do know is that in the middle of a summer day, on a two lane county road in rural Arkansas, we saw a dark figure.

We were chasing a calf that had gotten out of the pasture. We couldn't get around it to shoo it back the way it came. The calf wasn't gonna play our game.

It was then, on the road, that the calf stopped cold and stared down the road at something ahead. Then we looked up from the calf and saw the figure.

It was "walking" towards us, kind of a limp, steady but slow, one arm sort of pinned to it's side unmoving, the other arm swinging.

It was all one color, a dark brown. It had no discernible facial features nor did it seem to have any clothes.

It was walking right in the middle of the road heading towards us.

At first we thought it was a neighbor out for a walk so we called to "him" to help us with the calf. No response. It keeps walking. We called again. No response. It keeps walking.

It's right about this time that the alarm bells go off in our heads. The calf hasn't moved. Nothing adds up about the whole situation.

We look at each other and decide in about half a second that we didn't sign up for this shit and off we go back up the driveway to the house. Hey, we were about 12 years old at the time.

I think the calf beat us back to the house but I'm hazy on that point. It could have stayed in the road. I really don't know.

Never saw the figure again. Never want to see it again.

Gravatar Athor.. what county in Arkanasas?

Gravatar When I was a young boy I was playing in the house next to the doorwall. My grandfather had died maybe a year or so ago, yet he showed up outside the door watching me play for a short time. Never saw him again after that.

Gravatar Crawford county

Just outside Dyer.

Gravatar Thanks AP. I just want to dig around and see if there are similar reports around that area.

That's some SERIOUSLY f'd up stuff right there dude.

Gravatar Never seen anything personally, but my great-grandpa swore he saw one once. Other people that I respect have said the same thing.

Gravatar My wife was sick one time when she was a little girl. She said she felt her aunt, who had recently died, tickle her in a way she always did. Her mom says both my wife and her older sister came running from opposite ends of the house at the same time saying their aunt is here.

They have a few stories in their family. I have never seen anything.

Gravatar Nate: no details forthcoming?

I've not seen one. Not sure I ever want to.

Gravatar Oh, just remembered this. Not exactly a Ghost story, but definitely bizarre.

My aunt (my dad's oldest sister) was in the hospital and had just had heart surgery (I think. She had had some sort of surgery, anyway). She was still out of it and the doctors couldn't figure out why. She was no longer under anesthesia, etc. so should have woken up. But she didn't.

The family was gathered around her bed and was talking, etc. hoping she would wake up soon. Suddenly, she started tapping on the bed rail. She was still unconscious. The tapping had a weird rythm to it, but no one really paid attention to it, but thought she might be coming out of it. The tapping went on for several minutes.

One of the nurses came in to check on her and said, "thats morse code." Apparently, this nurse had been in the Navy or something and had learned morse code. He jotted down what she was tapping.

It was "I am drowning."

He called in a doctor and they checked, and sure enough, her lungs were almost full of fluid. They got that taken care of and she was fine. She woke up soon after they got it worked out.

When she was told about the morse code tapping, she couldn't believe it. She had never studied it nor knew any morse code at all.

That always freaked me out. In a good way.

Gravatar Not quite a ghost, but I saw Bigfoot tracks once.

Gravatar Never.

I think you have to be suggestible in nature to see such things. Kind of like why only Catholics see Mary, only UFO nuts see them, and only Pentacostals see and cast out demons everywhere.

Whether it was corporeal or whether it was something else, I don't know.-- Athor Pel

Heck, I've seen hundreds of them. Thousands of sergeants too.

Gravatar There's something in dad's garage that turns on the radio everytime you turn to leave. Funny, but just a little creepy, too.

Gravatar IR sensor?

Gravatar I used to live on a old War of Northern Aggression battlefield, on the eastern face of South Mountain just north of Fox's Gap, right at the site of the Battle of South Mountain. More ghosts than you can shake a willow switch at. The town of Burkittsville, of Blair Witch fame, was about a mile away. That whole area has lots of ghost stories. The things I saw looked like a field of small cooking fires, and fires among the trees. When I tried to walk up to the fires to see what they really were, the fires moved - that's when it felt a bit freaky.

However, all that said; I believe in ghosts, and whether or not anyone has seen one or has proof of one matters not a whit. I believe in ghosts because the Bible says they exist.

Gravatar Professor Hale,

If what I and my cousin saw was a result of suggestion then why did the calf see it too? The calf literally went from actively trying to avoid us to ignoring us entirely after seeing the figure in the road.

Gravatar Exactly. I never seriously considered the matter until Bonita (my german shepard) and I both saw something.

Gravatar Animals are very sensitive to stuff like this. No I have never seen one and hope I never will.

Gravatar I do believe Professor Hale's comment will deserve a post.

Gravatar You are suggestible, so you interpret the calf (or dog's) behavior in light of your own expectations. Who can say why those animals behaved as they did. My dogs bark at nothing all the time. Sometimes they bark at real stuff, sometimes not. Sometimes, in the dark, they growl at me. I think it is because the one is getting old and doesn't see so well any more. The younger one is just backing her play just in case.

I live in Fredericksburg. Another site of much bloodshed. Still nothing. I have no expectation of seeing it.

Perhaps the pre-conception of seeing things makes one open to seeing them and i am just closed that way.

Or maybe see don't see any ghosts because we also have a black cat and he keeps them away.

Gravatar Even the blanket and unprovable assertion that "animals are sensitive" is laying onto them our own expectations. When they alert to something we can't see, we feel our unprovable assertion is validated. The alternative is that your dog is a moron.

Gravatar Refresh the blog Professor.

And yes...

You were set up.

Gravatar There's something in dad's garage that turns on the radio everytime you turn to leave. Funny, but just a little creepy, too.

My daughter has a baby puzzle. We would turn off the light, and the stupid thing would make noise. We thought the thing was possessed. Then it dawned on me that it is light sensitive. When the baby puts the puzzle piece in the right spot, it makes an animal sound. I thought it was magnetic or something.

My sister in law worked in a hair salon in Sioux Falls. There was something in the building where she was working. You would hear kids laughing. You would turn around and there was a chair balanced in a way that seemed impossible. I wish I could remember.

Gravatar "That always freaked me out. In a good way."

That's an incredible story. There are demons in this world but there are also guardian angels.

Gravatar "You are suggestible, so you interpret the calf (or dog's) behavior in light of your own expectations. ...

Professor Hale | Homepage | 06.30.09 - 6:35 pm"

Your persistence in calling it suggestion doesn't really hold water because there has to be a suggester for there to be a suggestion.

There was no suggester. No scary stories were told. No scary movies were watched. No one hypnotized us. There is no tradition of bigfoots in that part of the state. Nor are there any ghost stories told about any of the properties in the area.

You say the the calf's behavior was interpreted through the lense of the suggestion.

We saw the calf change it's behavior BEFORE we saw the figure. We treated the figure as a man for quite some time before we decided it might be something else. These are not things that happen in a situation created by suggestion. Our expectations for most of the encounter were opposite of what a suggested encounter would be.

Bottom line, I saw what I saw. I do not claim to know what it was. For you to claim it was suggestion is to call me a liar. Your insistence is insulting in it's repetition.

If you insist on calling people liars even if only by insinuation you should expect there to be some repercussions. Next time, just enjoy the damn story and keep your mouth shut. It's people like you that kill the joy amongst the people in your life. Now you know why some people likely avoid your company.

If one day you meet an entity not of the material world I pity you your absolute faith in it being unreal. For you will be unprepared for and unprotected from whatever it decides to do to you.

Gravatar For the record the radio in Dad's garage ... it has a remote but if the door is open or closed no light turning on or off it will still do it. Unless maybe the door closing gives off an IR signal, unlikely.
And yes Nate has a Ghost.

Gravatar For you to claim it was suggestion is to call me a liar. --AP

Of course not. You can be wrong without being a liar. It is the nature of miraculous things that we don't fully understand what it is, otherwise we wouldn't call it miraculous. I expect that at some point when we all get to Heaven there will be a lot of forehead slapping when these things are explained and understood.

Now you know why some people likely avoid your company. --AP

And here I was thinking it was a hygiene issue. Thanks for clearing that up.

Gravatar There is a touch-control light in our guest bedroom that occasionally turns itself on and off. My wife believes that it is the ghost of the previous owner's mother who lived there and died just before we bought it, and whose presence she has previously sensed.

I think it is just static electricity triggering the control circuitry.

Maybe it's both.

Gravatar I've never seen a ghost, but I once sensed a problem. When 17, walking home from my part time job one night, I had a gut wrenching feeling that something was wrong and that I needed to pray. I ran into the house, my mother crying, my sister had gone missing.

She eventually escaped from the hotel room where the creep had raped and locked her up. He's still rotting in jail to this day.

I don't think I suggested to myself that something was wrong.

Gravatar So no one shot the fucker?

Gravatar Had a chance to sleep on this post Nate, and while its not a ghost, I did last year while disposing of all of my horror/ghostly genre dvd's kick up some very bad mojo. It was very creepy the feeling I had all that afternoon while bagging them up. My cats would have nothing to do with the living room for 2 days after the disposal.

I played some gospel and praise music and that 'cleaned up the aura' so to speak. I do think that the spirits did not like me cleaning out their garbage from my house.

Gravatar You have cats?

Gravatar No. I was wisely kept away from the man through my parent's wishes. The cops had gotten to him before anyone else, anyway.

Heck, I don't even know his name (never delved too deeply into this with my sister).

Sister is now a mother of two kids, and she's doing well. Doesn't have a hatred towards men, like some women would. Though it took her a long time to mature, imo.

That time in our lives was crazy. She was pretty damn suicidal for awhile. Even though I was bigger, she fought me hard when I pulled knives out of her hands, and radios away from the bathtub.

Again, she's come a long way, and I'm proud of her.

Gravatar You should be proud of her hoss. And someday you should shoot that S.O.B.

Gravatar Yes Nate, I do. Hubby and I live rural so the cats earn their keep.

Don't have dogs because its like having more kids and I have already been there done that. I like dogs, but they just don't fit in our lifestyle right at the moment.

Gravatar So I take it that Professor Hale would not believe the story in the Bible about Balaam and his donkey and the angel?

Nate, you said DrWho saw something once? What did she see?

Gravatar There you go again, jumping to conclusions. If you first accept that there are angels, as described in the Bible, why would you not also accept a miraculous account of the donkey seeing one and then talking about him?

It is like people who believe God miraculously created the Earth, but then can't accept He could do it all at once but instead had to evolve each animal from a single celled organism. and each vally had to be carved away gradually over a period of millions of years.

Gravatar The real question is, was the donkey speaking in tongues or some form of Hebrew/Aramaic?

Gravatar Never had a ghost issue although I do believe that you can open yourself up to seeing them if you let certain other things into your life - like Susan for example. My issues were more demon inspired dreams which went away when I learned to pray in my dreams.

Gravatar Not ghosts, but spirits, yeah.

Saw what I thought was Jesus in the kitchen right before I got saved, fell to my knees and started praying, prayed for the baptism of the Holy Spirit ( being raised "we're the only ones kind of Church of Christ, I didn't even know what that was) and it wasn't Jesus. Later, my bil who is a "psychic healer" told me it wasn't Jesus, but I already knew.

We used to have spirits in the house all the time, and even before being a christian, using the name of Christ would make them leave. Our firstborn went through a spell of screaming nightmares when about 6 months old, and we would open the door to the dark bedroom and see a black cloud over his bed. "If you come in the name of Christ, you are welcome here" would always send it away.

Only happened once with second born, never with third born.

Saw two "darknesses" in church right after we got saved, standing up front next to the preacher.

Gravatar "And yes Nate has a Ghost."

He *has* a ghost, or does the ghost have him? oooooooooo!

but then can't accept He could do it all at once but instead had to evolve each animal from a single celled organism

Folks can accept He could have done it that way. He's God, after all. He can do it however way He wants. Doesn't mean He did.

Gravatar There is something in Nate's house. Nate, and 3 others (not counting Bonita) have seen her.

Gravatar Is this Nate speaking or "her"? Don't be projectile vomiting now.

Gravatar Nate, it's been awhile since this post, (and since I've been here) but I still don't see your ghost story. What did you and Bonita see?
