You will be very disappointed in the Tesla \"museum\". First place I went when I got to CS. A couple of hairy dudes with some scroungy books for sale.
Garden of the Gods in CS - definitely. Red Rocks up by Denver - if you can swing a concert there, it's memorable. Estes Park is fun for the kids and womenfolk.
Colorado is full of great things to do in the outdoors - cain't hardly go wrong - the Tesla place is the only flop I can think of right off hand.
I don't know why, but I have a mental image of Nate driving down the road with that Convoy song cranked and he's singing along.

How long you gonna be in the area? There's a lot to see and do here, enough to keep you busy for several days.
I second the Garden of the Gods visit. Just went hiking there on the 4th with my clan and Erik from Emunda and his boy. Great place.
And no trip to the Springs would be complete without an excursion up Pikes Peak. Rather than drive that beast up there, I'd recommend the cog railway for the novelty. Reservations required, you can make 'em online, but it ain't cheap. Or take my minivan, costs less and the boys can spend more time rock-crawling than what the train allows for.
Res already mentioned rafting. We haven't done a trip yet this year. Consider it.

If you're stickin' to I-40, you won't be going through phoenix, but if for some reason you do and have a hankering for mexican food, try Rito's. Crappy joint, but the food's excellent.
El Metate in Gallup, NM is also pretty good, last time I rolled through there, and you might want to give the Navajo Fry Bread a try at some point while in Arizona. It's pretty much everywhere.
Are you guys planning to hike the canyon? It's a fun thing to do, but get started early.

Flagstaff is very pretty (and great weather), but there isn't much to do there this time of year. Can take the ski-lift at Snow Bowl up, or hike on Mt. Elden, or see Walnut Canyon (Indian ruins).
Second the motion to hike the Canyon, even if it's just a couple miles down Bright Angel. Start early!
The Petrified Forest is kind of interesting, but I haven't been there in many, many years. Meteor Crater as well.

Nate, if you do hit AZ, hit the Tucson area. A lot cooler temp wise, and the Sonora Desert museum would be a great outing for the kids.
As to your accomodations, do you have any idea how many snowbirds live in their RV's for months at a time every year? They do like their conveniences.
It's a good thing I don't have an RV, because all I'd do is wander the countryside...

bring plenty of water as it gets hotter and hotter as you descend.

Falls out it's a great climb to get to the visitor's center.

Well since we are throwing out places to see, Phantom Canyon is a gorgeous drive from the gambling towns west of Colorado Springs and takes you down to Canyon City where you can go white water rafting. On the way to the gambling towns (Blackhawk and Cripple Creek) is Mueller State Park which has some excellent hiking as well, and RV camping spots, tho I must say I prefer both phantom canyon and mueller when the aspens are turning.
But seriously, you cannot beat the hospitality found at Waterboys. Its definitely the place to visit and get a great dinner. I'd be there for it but as I am packing up and leaving town this saturday it isn't going to happen.
Having been to the GC, I must say if given a choice, I would skip it, or spend minimal time there. Of course, it's different if you're going to hike down in. I've not done that, but I think I wouldn't mind someday.
Boulder Dam (aka Hoover Dam), Royal Gorge Bridge, Summit County, CO (I lived there for a time) are a few of the stops I would make. I've not been to Garden of the Gods, but I hear it's awesome.
Heck, while I'm dreaming, I would skip the AZ/NM circuit and just go straight to CO then up to Jackson, WY, and spend time in Yellowstone.
What's wrong with being a snowbird? Retired, beholden to nobody, able to go when and where ever you please. Sounds like the clan of Nate and DrWho to me. Snowbirds are just what they call them out here in the west is all. And they do like their creature comforts.
Snowbirds = travelling Yankees.
They leave the North for warmer climes during the winter. My maternal grandparents were classic snowbirds, leaving for Florida soon after Labor Day and coming back just before Memorial Day.
If you want to refer to rednecks in RVs, you'd probably want to use something like 'cooters' -- have shell, will travel. Or 'armadillos', if they're Texan.
