Come on folks, this is not difficult. Max out your 401k and your IRA. Then donate a bunch of money to your church. All this pretty much comes right off the top. Start a business and itemize all your deductions. And the most important thing; hire a good accountant.
Although my taxes vary wildly, some years I can pour so much money into a rental that my business is negative, some years I make too much and have to pay. I can't recall ever paying more than about 12K in federal taxes, after I wised up and got an accountant - before that I was paying tons.

My above statement was ONLY considering federal income tax, sorry. Counting all the other taxes I am way in the hole like everyone else.

Here's how you interview an accountant:
Ask them to answer 2+2
If one answers "5" don't hire him, he's an idiot.
If one answers "4" don't hire him, he's not smart enough.

I think I payed $1500-2000 in taxes.
