Just curious, what's a good semi-auto .223 with detachable mags that doesn't cost a fortune?

An AR-15 is way out of my price range (think AK price range).

Gravatar Keltec SU-16

Gravatar Actually, this mini is what the mini should have been from the beginning. It comes with a heavy barrel and adjustable harmonic dampener, which is exactly what's required to make a regular mini-14 shoot straight. Damn shame it took 'em this long to come up with a product.

Gravatar my experience with harmonic dampeners is that they are great for making good shooting rifles into great shooting rifles.

I've never seen one turn a piece of shit into a shooter.

The action sucks. The trigger sucks. Tough to "tune" that out by adjusting the barrell length.

Gravatar Like I was telling Nate, this reminds me of the bubba-tized SKS "sniper" rifles you see all the time at gun shows.

You see accurizing ads for the Mini-14 in Shotgun News. Heavy cryo-treated Krieger barrels, etc. It's like putting a Leupold scope on an SKS: fresh paint for a condemned house. Flame decals on a '73 Pinto. The rifle is what it is. You want a tack driver, better buy something else.

What kind of accuracy does Springfield promise out of its standard grade M-1As? I know it's not 1MOA.

Gravatar hrm... The National Match, M21, and M25 are all guaranteed out of the box sub MOA accurate.

The standard... I don't know what the guarantee is. I know guys with stock 1 moa guns though.

Gravatar Standard M1A's are only guranteed to get 3.5 MOA, and the National Match only promises 2. The SuperMatch promises 1, and the only thing from Springfield guranteed "sub MOA" is the Whitefeather, and its MSRP is about $5,000.

Gravatar hrm... I don't think that's correct Reason.. neither does Wikipedia... and neither does Springfield's local rep. Not on the M21 or the M25 I mean. YOu may be right on the standard.

I'll shoot an email and get the skinny from the horse's mouth.

Gravatar I wouldn't have been quite as hard on it. As I have said before, though, for the price you can have an AR15.

Gravatar for the price you can have an AR15

Assuming you want an AR15. Mini's are an easier sell to the wife, not nearly as scary looking and they shoot the same round. And they're stainless.

Besides, you guys act like Ruger is in business to make rifles - HA! They're in business to make money.

Gravatar So will liberals want to ban cars? or trains?

I mean someone died.. the whole point of american politics is to pass a law to keep it from happening again!

Gravatar Ruger makes a decent handgun. Their shotguns are OK. I'm not sold on their rifles. Does any variety of Ruger riffle stand out as a good shooter, this means at least moa at 200 yards?

Gravatar OT, but related to last Friday's ATF:

Regarding Nate's question of DragonSkin, the Army released information on their tests of the DragonSkin armour: Yahoo Article and Army article

Gravatar Bill, why do you have to 'sell' it to your wife. Be a man. Sneak it in the back door like the rest of us. And you can get stainless AR's. Barrels at least.

Res, I have been reading a lot a good things about ruger rifles lately, especially the new target model. They must have improved the quality of their barrels. I still would get a Savage or a Remington 700 though.

Gravatar "Be a man. Sneak it in the back door like the rest of us."

Errrrrrr... I'm missing something here.

I mean, a rifle's not something small like a CD burner, is it?

Gravatar Fine Ruger Rifles??

The Number 1 is a badass firearm... and very pretty indeed.

Gravatar Thanks WB
I'll take it with a boulder of salt though... considering our armed force's less than stellar record when it comes to evaluation... not to mention the timing.

more research required... and if time is of the essence... looks like we go with PACA.

Gravatar Last time I tried to sneak my rifle in the back door the wife wanted to know what I'd been watching on the internet.

Gravatar hehehehehehe

dirty ol' man!

Gravatar Bring that new gun through the front door.

And strut like a peacock.

After all,

you're the MAN.

Damnit.

Gravatar Exactly Luke!

A good wife would be just as proud to see the new firearm as you are.

Gravatar What'd you find out, Nate? My source was my brother-in-law who was a product support rep until about 6 months ago when he took an offer from another company, so he may have remembered incorrectly.

Let me know.

Gravatar Split the difference between us didn't he Reason?

Sorry man... I've been gone literally all day. I hadn't had time to check it out.

I appreciate you doin' the leg work.

Gravatar The keltec is a great rifle.

Gravatar n5: which one? The SUB-2000, SU-16 or the unavailable RFB?

I would like to shoot the SU-16A, myself. It would seem to be a good SHTF rifle, especially with a laser sight for good measure and night shooting. Plus, it's compatible with the standard M16 mags, a bonus when the revolution starts.

The RFB just looks and sounds very sweet.

Just a thought: since no iron sights on the RFB, for practical near-to-close range tactical fighting, should you put on a real scope, a low-power red dot or what?

I'm guessing it should be shooting less than 3 MOA out of the box, but would a rifle like that do much better for long range?

And if it can, should you really set it up for that? And keep something else for closer ranges? Especially in urban or suburban situations?

I mean, there are only so many weapons one guy can carry at once, right?

Gravatar Be a man. Sneak it in the back door like the rest of us.
Be the other kind of man, who says, "Look, I dont tell you what kind of tampons to buy; dont talk to me about my guns."
