What gripes me the most about taxation in this country is that they go after income. It's a bald-faced way of keeping the "grasping" middle class from ever making it to "elite" status.
Multi-millionaire sit-on-their-ass trust fund brats pay significantly less in taxes than I do - and I'm living in Frederick by-gawd Maryland, not ritzy Potomac or Bethesda. I'm putting 2 kids through college at the same time - without any assistance of any kind, thank you very much. And, since I just switched tax brackets (thank you, inflation!), I'm paying more taxes than ever.
And...as if those indignities weren't enough...because of income tax filing, the government knows significantly more about me than I wish them to know, and I am powerless to do anything about it.
I just hate it.

Nate: "And yes... I am still alive. I've been eyeballs deep in homeschooling for the last several days..."
Why did I have the impression you were across country, bringing home the bacon?
Damn incestuous blogs...

And yes... I am still alive. I've been eyeballs deep in homeschooling for the last several days.. and that is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
And here I thought you needed a rest after the blog-a-thon. Homeschooling is a very good reason for light blogging. Teach the younguns well.
Hey, who are your favorite characters from the War of Northern Aggression (or is it War for Southern Independence)? Have you run across any portraits or paintings of them online?

Actually I was half way across the country... but the bacon got left behind.
I had an honest to God no shit brazilian style hog hunt lined up... and the guide canceled.
My quest to kill a 300+ pound hog with a knife continues.

"hog hunt..."
That's what I thought I had read.
"... and the guide canceled. My quest to kill a 300+ pound hog with a knife continues."
Unfortunate. Well, you can always strap some extra weight on JAC and send him out into the woods...

that'd be a lot of damned extra weight... and while some may be suprised at the revolation... JAC doesn't actually have tusks.

It's not just the feds. A couple of my friends lived and worked in Ohio for less than a year. They filled out the Ohio tax forms based on what they earned while they lived there. Both of them received letters from the state demanding that they pay income taxes on everything they earned for the year. It took both of them a few months to get out of paying tax on what they earned in TN.

Nate, is there no end to your ignorance, or do you just like to bullshit? What kind of commie propaganda is this? I know this is the internet and all, but I think I'll do something wild and reckless and introduce a fact to the discussion.

If you live full-time overseas your first $85,700 of income is tax-free. And remember, there's all kinds of deductibles, such as; In addition to the foreign earned income exclusion, you can also claim an exclusion or a deduction from gross income for your housing amount if your tax home is in a foreign country and you qualify for the exclusions and deduction under either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test.
A married couple filing jointly can earn north of $250k per year and not pay a dime of US taxes. If you earn less than $17k you don't even have to file. Heck, you don't have to file if you earn more, but then you can't return to the US without paying for it. Sounds like Nate wants to leave the US, not pay any taxes, then retire back in the US for his Social Security and Medicare.

I don't understand why try arguing the rules of an institution you already know to be illegal in its mere existence.

Bill,
Read it again. What I quoted is straight from the IRS handout. IF you are a US Person, to recieve a certain security designation... an international bank MUST agree to the 30% withholding rule.
You're talking about how much you actually are forced to pay.
I'm talking about the fact that you are required to report... and the fact that moneys are withheld.
The plain truth is... if I ain't an american citizen.. and I don't live in the US... the IRS can fuck off. I ain't tellin'them a damned thing.

Good luck with the homeschooling, Nate.
That's actually a very good reason not to be out in the wind at 80 MPH!
Hopefully, I'll have a cool riding report this weekend with some pics. If not, I'll be chewing out some of my buddies from work.
You get a new (to you) bike, you need to break it in! Even if it is a Harley. It's a moral imperative!

You gonna share what curriculum you went with? How the boys are liking it, how you are liking it?
We are ramping it as well, no curriculum yet just the basics so far but will decide on something within the next couple of months.
Have fun with it.

We're in the same boat.. we're leaning towars a computer based K-12 curriculum that will then be supplemented by us based on its weaknesses.

Seems like there's some taxation without representation there somewhere, not that the gov't cares.

So why are you worried about US tax code? Ever hear of them extraditing someone for taxes?
