Call me cynical, but it strikes me as shameless pandering to Skynyrd's target demographic. No meat and no real point. It was probably written by a marketing consultant.

Then again, its probably too much to ask for solid philosophy (and genuine "edginess") in mainstream music.

Atonement for Saturday Night Special is gonna take more than a single.

I'm with Porcus

Gravatar Porcus your theory would have more credence if the other songs on the album that were written by Skynyrd didn't have the same politcal message. Ain't My America is just one example... Hobo man is another... interesting that they would write that latter one now... as its about men living through another great depression.

dig?

Gravatar Dr. Who says "dig" too?

Gravatar Shortly after I bought my house in Dickson County, I was talking to one of my neighbors about handguns. He is an attorney. He asked me if I had registered my handguns with the sherriff's office. I told him there is not a handgun registration law in TN or in Dickson County. I had to send him a couple of internet links to convince him. This is a guy who hunts, owns rifles, and grew up in Hickman County.
Propaganda is powerful and dangerous.

Who gives a f*ck. pussy, is it truth or not? You bunch of pantie waists can't even hear the truth. I was in a band and no asshole ever told me what to write, and if he tried he would be laughed away. cynical is good, but do not think that other people write songs for skynyrd.

Gravatar "Liked his plan, but they came undone, when he got around to God and Guns"

But seriously, which plan? Health care, stimulus, cash for clunkers, continuing multiple wars?

Gravatar Get the same bit all the time, RJ. Sally Reporter always reports on the TV who the murderer's gun was "registered" to even though there is no such thing as registration.

Gravatar Sounds like CDB if Charlie could sing.

Gravatar

To portray Skynyrd as a bunch of “gun nuts” would be incorrect, according to Van Zant. “I’m kind of like Ronnie, ‘handguns are made for killing,’ and I’ve never seen anybody shoot a deer with a .38,” he says. “I do own a bunch of rifles, I live out in the swamp, and you’ve got to protect yourself.”

Gravatar Didn't they also tell Neil Young off in Sweet home Alabama?!
That's got to count for something. No?
And there's this...
"Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscience bother you?"

Gravatar “I’m kind of like Ronnie, ‘handguns are made for killing,’

Well, duh! Of COURSE they're made for killing!

As if that's a bad thing?

Let's hear the amazing philosophical genius explain why cops should be able to carry them.

Gravatar Move Zig: Young and the band were good friends. Other than the song, no hard words were ever exchanged. They hung out together.

Gravatar I was in Georgia when I bought my first handgun. A .357 mag revolver. S&W model 686 stainless. I took it to the local shariffs office and told the shariff behind the desk that I was there to register my gun.

His reply, (insert Georgia drawl) "Why wuud you wanna do thaaat?

I got the point.

Gravatar "No meat and no real point. It was probably written by a marketing consultant."

NO! They live this stuff. My son was working backstage at Ironstone in Murphy's, CA this year. it's a nice medium size outdoor venue and he got to talking to the roadies and band members about guns (It's his favorite subject. He got a hog two days ago). Before it was over they were hot to buy some of his guns, offering cash on the spot, and if the band didn't have to leave that night they would have been shooting at our place. He's not into Skynard at all, but had a lot in common with these guys. Alan Jackson was another guy who my son talked about guns with. Some of these guys are very much for real.

Gravatar I never knew that, JohnZ.
That is interesting. I wonder why they wrote the words in the first place.
Nevertheless, I still loved the Watergate reference.

Gravatar I don't trust anybody who makes money off both sides in a war...

Gravatar And yet we both work for the Feds, don't we Luke?

How weird.

Gravatar I wondered if you had picked that up, tho' Floyd is my favourite track off of that album.

Think I'll go put it on again...

Gravatar I work for the Air Force, and while I do what I can to promote liberty, I've never made a single dime at that. In fact my efforts to that end do nothing but cost me money. So no, unlike the band, I'm not getting rich off both sides. Like Doc Holiday, my hypocrisy only goes so far.

Gravatar I youtubed the whole CD. Hadn't listened to Skynyrd since the 70's. I had forgotten how hard edged southern rock they were. Enjoyed very very much.

Gravatar Move: I think they became friendly after the song was released.

Gravatar Sorry, I wasn't referring to financial gain. Just philosophy.
