A horse died? Well, fire up the grill!
I suppose it sucks for the jockey, trainer, or owner, but aside from that... it was a horse, they die. Shooting it was by far the best thing for it, folks that say otherwise are just selfish.

I may be the idiot to which you refer, but I can assure you, I did not expect them to keep Eight Belles alive after breaking both her front ankles.
I own Salukis which are running dogs. I love to see them run as I do horses.
I watch the horse races to see the horses run not to be hurt. Forgive my emotional outburst.

Nate, I'm feelin' ya. It makes me crazy when all of the bleeding hearts come out and boo-hoo over a stupid horse that died while doing the only thing it would ever be any good at (besides breeding).
Things happen, people. Get over it. More importantly, get over YOURSELVES.

But understand.. the fact that the idiot in question asked the same question you did... that doesn't make you the same as the idiot.
You may well have enjoyed the emotional outburst. But you didn't display the feigned outrage that the others did... that was what stirred me up this morning.

I did see the derby this year. I wasn't paying much attention as I was in a hospital room. I did notice the horse you picked won. Good call Nate.

All is well.
I learned after naming that the middle name has a 'French' spelling. Oh well. It is my mom's middle name and it went well with the first.
We had one bad night because she had to spend the first night home in a billy bed for jaundice. She hated it, and made it well known. We couldn't leave her, the bright lights will damage her eyes and she kept tearing off the mask and shielding. So we didn't get much sleep and were already tired. She didn't have jaundice too bad, and we were told to just put her in the sunlight for the next day. She has just about lost all signs of it now.

Wait...people still watch the races on TV? I'm going with The Herd on this one. Horse Racing is about as popular as the NHL and Boxing these days. The avg. spectator is 65+.
Of course, more people will probably tune in in the hopes of watching a young philly die.

I know that whole jockey thing is just idiotic. I found it very sad, but animals LOVE to do what they were bred to do. I love it when animal rights idiots blabber on about how cruel dog sledding is - have you ever watched them pull? They're clearly having the time of their lives. Idiots.

No knowledge of horse-racing here, just curious: does the broken leg or legs on a horse usually lead to death by internal bleeding?
And do they ever harvest the semen or eggs from a champion horse for later use?

I've heard that a broken front ankle is incredibly painful for a horse.
I'm sure Frank Wychek was thinking two casts and a wheelchair, he'll be good to go in 6 weeks.
Those horses are million dollar commodities. I'm sure there are a lot of emotions on the sides of the owners (if you don't own the horse, your emotions don't count), but those aside, that can't be a decision that is made lightly.

No.

Rght now a Thoroughbred cannot be registered with the Jockey Club registry unless is conceived by "live cover". Not all breeds have this rule and it is possible that it will change in the future.

PETA and HSUS have lobbied our govt officials so well that there are now laws being considered around the US to spay and neuter all dogs and cats by the age of 4 mos. An individual wanting to breed dogs will pay exorbitant licensing fees to do so, and will have to have the progeny spayed/neutered by 4 mos.
It seems like a great idea on the surface, but there are medical problems that can occur altering dogs at such a young age.
The goal is no more pets. After all, animals should only run wild in PETA's opinion or better yet not exist at all.

MM, Broken legs in horses generally leads to fatal lead poisoning or pentobarbitol overdose. The reasons are the fact that horses need all four legs tosupport their weight. Even with a cast their other legs tend to gradually break down. Often a horse will not tolerate a cast and will repeatedly destroy them. With both front ankles fractured(a horse supports 60%of its weight on the fron legs)there was no way to save her.

There are many reasons why a racehorse need to be euthanized for a broken leg, let alone two. Search (horse + broken leg) for info.
Horses aren't likely to sit still for 6 weeks watching Oprah while they heal up.
Plus, they have just indicated that they are not good breed stock. Its not like they stepped in a gopher hole.
Racing Horses are not people, or cats or dogs, although some of them need shootin, even if their legs are ok.
