Gravatar So far, only baby hats and baby sweaters (though none for preemies). You could make this simple preemie cap? I'm making a knitpicks order this week if you want in!

Gravatar i have "knitting for baby" if you want to borrow it. lots of simple sweaters and hats. i love the petal bib in "one skein," but that seems pretty decorative, not functional. i also knit blossom from magknits, but only if it's a girl, obviously.

Bon tricot !

Gravatar how about a set of preemie hats, in graduated sizes? all babies need hats, esp. premies. and you would be best if you made, say, 3 ultra-soft, ultra comfy hats in sizes to accomodate baby's head as he/she grows.
however, baby sweaters are INFINITELY more fun to knit.

Gravatar a blanket? they need warmth surely. And a blanket can be small (so quick knit) but be kept around as they grow.

I like the idea above of graduated preemie hats though.

I suppose the best thing to think about is yarn. I hate working with cashmere, but it is obviously beautifully soft. I'd recommend the RCY Cashsoft over cashmerino.

Gravatar Oooh, the "baby socks" from Interweave! The pattern's even online: www.interweave.com/knit/interweave_knits/ web_projects/Better_Than_Bootie.pdf
They're fun; I made the braided cable ones that were in the actual magazine and they got a ton of ooohs and aaahs at the baby shower. Anyway, they're adorable and a great way to use up extra sock yarn, and they keep tiny feet warm.

Gravatar Babies always need hats. I say go with premie caps. They're so cute.

Gravatar I am going to second Anna's comment about the preemie hats in graduated sizes. Think of how hopeful a gift that will be for parents who are so scared for their tiny one.

Gravatar hats are always great. but... i just bought and am reading through the new book Mason-Dixon Knitting (you know of their famous blog?). and they have the cutest idea for a baby kimono! i can't wait for the news of a baby to knit one. go to the bookstore and check it out.

Gravatar i agree with the other commenters.. either a couple of tiny hats in graduated sizes or a swaddling blanket (or both!) little MJ was close to premie size when she was born and kaitlyn needed these things. especially tiny hats. all the hats that people had made for her were too big! and newborns really like to be swaddled. it calms them down.

Gravatar oh my god, please make the papoose from "knitting for two." it's the best, it will be useful from the start, and can be sized however you want. check out sarah's - it's soooo cute!

Gravatar Hats, wrap sweaters, and blankets are all very useful things for newborns. I think that hats would be more immediately useful for a preemie since they're usually kept in isolettes with various monitors on their little bodies, so they might not be able to wear sweaters right away. A blanket would probably be more useful than sweaters, since the baby and mom could cuddle up under one for kangaroo care.

As for yarn, if you haven't worked with it I like either Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino or Berocco Plush depending on the project. Both can go in the washing machine, which is totally crucial.

Hope this helps!

Gravatar Hats or blankets are best. My son was a premie and the only hat that fit him was the tiny one that I made and you can never ahve enough little blankets and burping cloth.

Gravatar I am in the process of making a baby hat ant burp cloth set. The hat I made in less than two hours with a simple garter stitch band and a little decorative lace pattern. The burp cloth is essentially a rectange that fits over the shoulder so I'm putting a garter stitch border on that also. I think you could make a bunch of these and they would be rather functional (one size fits all). I should have a picture posted by Monday on my blog. I'll let you know.

Gravatar I'd say a fine cotton blanket and cap made from the smallest gauge you can handle in three weeks
weave a tiny little satin ribbon through it for trim. It's very difficult for moms to find premie things, I know she'll appreciated your gift whatever you make.

Gravatar You could always make something a little bigger - most moms get a lot of clothes for a newborn and then don't have much for when they grow out of it! I always knit a 6mo to 1yr size for a baby so that they have something to grow into!

Gravatar Hi! There is a super cute bolero that could be unisex depending on the color you choose, in the new book called ONE SKEIN-I have forgotten the author (oops). Anyway it's cute, fast and tiny. Can't wait to hear the final decision.

Gravatar Baby blankets are always a great idea!

Gravatar I've learned from friends who've just had babies they say that they need cardigans. The baby likes to be wrapped up at all time and the button down easiness of cardies is perfect for new born baby knits. Knitty and Knitmag have cute baby cardigans. Kate Gilbert has a new one in the newest interweave that has a cute matching hat.
