Gravatar The TWC reporters just had a phone call from a reporter in the Sheraton hotel. The upper floors of the hotel are compromised. Unconfirmed reports of the same at the Hyatt(sp?).

Gravatar Having stayed last autumn in the Hyatt, there are MANY places in New Orleans I'd rather be than on the upper floors of that hotel (and let's face it, no sane person wants to be anywhere near New Orleans right now).

For those unfamiliar to the hotel, it has a large central open area that stretches to the top of the building which is over 20 stories high. The doors to the rooms face out toward this atrium area, giving those with a fear of heights a very uncomfortable sensation. On either side of the building, there are large windows all the way up either side of the atrium - I cannot imagine what would/could/has happen when those windows break but Physics would not be good.

Gravatar According to what I heard, it was said quickly and my attention is divided they said all the windows are already broken. Apparently the TWC website has a blog. I commented there to ask them to confirm the report I heard.

Gravatar Hey folks, I'm still following all this. Went to bed last night (about 7:00 your time) and had very vivid dreams about New Orleans, and a whale.

Just popped down to the Newsagents and had a chat with the woman over the counter, she had no idea a hurricane was even hitting America! (Although she qualified this neatly by explaining that her two year old was a hurricane in herself, and took up ALL her time) Here in the UK where I live (Wales) people don't seem to be very aware as to what's going on out there, though the national news is devoting more and more time to it now.

Question: Was there a study into how many levees can be breached before Orleans gets in serious trouble? Can they cope with a few breaches or is KYAGB if a couple go down?

Because it's not looking good. Where I'm sitting it's sunny with a few clouds. Can't imagine the hell it must be there. Stay safe you lot.

Brendan, you're doing a brilliant job. One of the best blogs I've ever read. Keep up the good work! And props to WWLTV as well, who I've been watching live, only now they seem to have gone down!

Gravatar Nope, seems to be back up now.

It's going to relatively spare New Orleans Metro, is it? It's a little confusing. Guess they must be confused too. Can't blame 'em.

Gravatar Howling wind from Hurricane Katrina peeled holes in the roof of the Superdome on Monday morning as thousands of people huddled inside seeking shelter.

Pieces of metal sheared off, leaving two holes that were visible from the floor. Water dripped in and people were moved away from about five sections of those seats.

The development, around 8 a.m. as the storm neared its peak outside, did not create any visible fear among the estimated 8,000 to 9,000 people who spent the night in the huge arena. Some watched as sheets of metal, flapping visibly, rumbled loudly. From the floor, looking up more than 19 stories, it appeared to be openings of about 6 feet long.

General Manager Glenn Menard said he did not know how serious the problem was. ''We have no way of getting anyone up there to look,'' he said.
