I just talked to my friend in Ocean Springs, MS who works for the city. He told me that they have been pulling bodies out of houses all day. The surge in Ocean Springs (on the east side of Biloxi) was in excess of 20 feet.
This is worse than I could imagine ever happening. Lots of missing people.

55 . . . that's a high death toll to start with in the US. Highest starting death toll I've heard since 9/11.
These natural disaster tolls only tend to go up. Not good.

Are any of you listening to jeanne Meserve on MSNBC? She's describing people trapped in buildings and screaming for help, but rescuers can't get to them. She's having the hardest time not breaking down completely.

Ummm, I'm watching MSNBC, but it wasn't Jeanne Meserve, it was Tucker Carlson interviewing some guy.

I haven't, but: how far inland were the shelters, and how far above sea level?

Carin, this might put your mind at ease (from the perspective of no deaths reported at shelters)...
Jim Pollard, spokesman for the Harrison County emergency operations centre, said 50 people were killed by Katrina in his county, with the bulk of the deaths at an apartment complex in Biloxi. Three other people were killed by falling trees in Mississippi and two died in a traffic accident in Alabama, authorities said.
But, I did read that 8 shelters lost roofs.

I think shelters are fine. Some shelters got damage but the people were moved.
The problem are the many many people who used the nothing is worse than Camille theory of evacuation. This storm, although maybe weaker in wind speed, has apparently created surge higher and more wide spread than Camille. This storm hit to the west of Camille and homes in Ocean Springs that got nothing at all in Camille (i mean water stayed in the Gulf) got their homes 4 block inland wiped out.
Very sad day.

Has anyone heard anything on how Hancock County, MS fared? I am worried about the small towns of Bay Saint Louis and Waveland.

I haven't heard anything specific, but anything on the shoreline will have been decimated by the storm surge. Other than that, you may want to browse some of the media links at blogs at left, and see if you can find anything. If I see anything, I'll post it.
