Subject: My Hurricane Story -- trapped people..help
Story: Mary Queen of VN Church 5069 Willowbrook Drive, New Orleans, LA 70129
There are still approximately over 300 Vietnamese people stranded in
sewage water up to the necks in many areas gathered at the Church.
We've contacted USCG, Red Cross, news media but no help has come out to
their way yet. As you all know, Versailles is so far on the eastern edge
of New Orleans that by the time any helicopters come that way, they're
already filled with people and have to turn back towards the Superdome
to drop people off. (I think this is the case but not sure)
We have been in touch with some of the people there thru one phone (a
land line in a residential home near the small church) for the past two
days but no help still. The people have been taking turns to keep
telephone watch to hear news. We managed to patch thru NBC via 3-way
calling around 3pm today but still no help.
The water is still rising in that area. The levees east (Lake
Pontchartrain) and south (Chalmette)of Versailles are the ones that have
been breached. Many of the people are growing weak and sick from lack of
food and water plus the heat. Some of them feel like they probably
won't make it for the next day. Please people!!! do what you can to get
these people to save land.

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- Charity Hospital--Gunmen inside threatening doctors
Story: My coworker's brother is one of seven doctors who have been left behind at Charity Hospital. His name is Vinroot, I'm sorry, I don't know the first name. He is in a panic--the doctors have barricaded themselves on the seventh floor because armed gunmen are outside threatening them and demanding access to the roof so they can be rescued first. He is desperate. Someone needs to help these people NOW!

Stranded family on I-610 at Elysian Fields

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- Stranded family
Story: I have learned that I have family members stranded on I-610 and Elysian Fields Avenue. They were told that a bus would pick them up there and bring them to Houston's Astrodome. However, the buses that came to that pick-up point did not gather all the people. There may approximately be 100+ people at this spot. Since the people stranded at the Superdome has caused the rescue efforts there to come to a halt, I would like to see people at this point picked up and other areas where they are not fighting the rescuers. We are waiting to drive to Houston to pick-up our loved ones. They are: Lemona Chandler, Wilson Simmons, Lynn Bolden, Leslie Smith, Malcom Bolden

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- Trapped Persons
Story: There are 7 people trapped in the Gallary Row apartments at 448 Julia Street (corner of Julia and Magazine). They were attacked by armed gang who hijacked their truck and drove it through a locked gate in the parking garage. They are unable to leave the building due to the heavy presence of large, well-organized armed looters. They expect the building to be attacked at any moment.
The trapped people are lightly armed (one shotgun and one pistol) but there are numerous entry points into the apartments. Currently the trapped people are holed up on the roof. Please send help ASAP.

University Hospital in desparate need of rescue

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL STILL IN DESPERATE NEED OF INITIAL HELP
Clearly rescuers' safety is the foremost and priority concern; however i write to follow up on my initial posting from yesterday. University hospital (on Perdido?), not to be confused with Tulane University hospital or Charity Hospital is still in need of an initial rescue effort.
University hospital has apparently slipped through the system and has yet to receive assistance as rescue efforts have been directed elsewhere. The hospital is absolutely non-functional and patients are dying at an alarming rate. My father in law (Dr. Oscar Ballester a treating physician at this hospital who is in need of food, water, and insulin) is stable, but we are unaware how long this will hold, possibly less than 48 hours.
Concentrated rescue efforts can produce results and directly save lives at this facility. Again, these efforts are clearly hampered by the lawlessness in the city. However, there has to be some attempt directed at this facility, as there has been none.
Any report to the contrary of my posting is simply mis-communication and false. Again, we are talking about university hospital and not the others.
Attempts to organize private rescue efforts, chartered helicopters, are hampered by FAA clearance issues and have thus far proven unsuccessful.
If anyone has words of advice, recommendations, comments, or anything at all, please e-mail me at jld05@fsu.edu.
Human resolve and spirit will ultimately prevail regardless of the this terrible time and the fate of those lost. This is unconditional--regardless of the contrary acts of those engaging in the horrible behavior that we all are witnessing.
