Gravatar Sorry, I just added a fourth question -- reload the post.

Give 'em hell Brendan.

Gravatar 1. 4909

3. right
4. yes

By the way, the first person to get a lottery ticket yesterday did not win. I'm guessing that the first winners were around 8:45.
The post you are referring to means that he was the first to BUY tickets today at 7am.

Gravatar 1. 5014
2. noonish
3. right (there were only 2 windows at the time)
4. No

Gravatar I don't see how this is going to prove anything, as the tickets were given out largely in order (albeit some windows may have moved faster than others), so of course the people who won all got there around the same time.

2 about 2:45

3. Right - were there three window? I was in the right one, but I think only two were open, and I think it was the center one
4. No

Of course, there's about a 1-in-3 chance that it would end up hitting only earlier morning people anyway, regardless of the lotto.

Gravatar 3L, you're right that it won't "prove" anything, but it may provide some interesting evidence... one way or the other.

Gravatar We got five lottery tickets, but I dont know all the numbers or windows:

1. around 9 am
~4400
winner
2. around 9 am
~4400
winner
3. around 1030am
~4500
winner
4. 1 pm
6495
far right window
loooser
5. 2 pm
dont know
loser

I hope this is somehow helpful, but I really dont see how it will be ... I mean, lottery numbers were given on a first come first serve basis, so it's obvious that the morning people got the winners ... that doesnt answer the question of whether that happened at random.

Gravatar a little late but

Gravatar didn't USC have some system where you had to hand in a coupon to get a lottery number to get tickets? or was it the coupon that came with your season tickets had the lottery number and a range of those got to go to the bowl and thereby trade in those coupons? I honestly don't recall, but I think there was some system in place that was reasonably effective at avoiding madness such as this.

Gravatar Oh please. This speculation that they "deliberately chose an "early" lottery-number" is ridiculous. I bet it comes from the same people who were speculating that they were going to redo the lottery because people had cheated.

And so what if they did? (I highly doubt it.) Have you ever been in a card game when the person who's supposed to cut the cards is a smart ass and just takes one single card off the top for the cut? He was supposed to pick a random spot to cut but deliberately chose the top card! OH THE HORROR! Do you guys get all mad and call the game a "complete and utter sham"?

Gravatar Unfair analogy, Anon. The person who cuts the top card off of the deck is still dealing with a random assortment of cards, unless he somehow knows that doing so will give him an unfair advantage. Although the University had already said that they would pick a range of numbers, if they deliberately picked the range based on time of arrival (to minimize the effects of cheating that their system that lacked an ID check accidentally encouraged), then it is not a random lottery that the University promoted.

To make the process easier and reduce time spent waiting, the University said that anyone who came during the hours of the lottery and picked up a ticket had an equal chance of winning. To deliberately select a range of numbers based on time undermines that idea, because then those who came earlier had a better chance of winning. Brendan has suggested that this may have happened, and is polling to see if the numbers support his. He has been clear that he has no way of proving this, only supporting it.

And I was one of those who speculated that the University was going to redo the lottery, and I thought that I had a credible reason to believe so. I have apologized on this blog for spreading information that turned out to be false, but I still believe that the University recognized their dilemma and considered redoing the lottery.
