obvious satire? You're joking, right? If you have to Google search something to figure out if its BS or not, its not satire.

I immediately strongly suspected that it was satire; I googled it to confirm my suspicions.

You know, in defense of Sully, Drude, and all those gullible bloggers out there, I should note that when I heard Laura Bush joking about going to Chippendale's and Dubya milkin' the male horse, I did honestly wonder if Lou Sheldon and James Dobson were readying their troops to chastise the president.

It's just an example of believing what you want to believe. The Left wanted to believe it...therefore, voila. I bet Sully's gonna keep it up...for "illustrative" purposes.

If this didn't smell like a hoax right from the start, you've probably bought into the "Conservative Christians" == "Taliban" meme too.
Don't you think people should have Googled to see if this is even a legit organization? If it is a legit press release, why isn't it on their webpage? Come on... bloggers are getting lazy.

Um except it wasn't the left who believed it.
And this illustrates my problem with Drudge and his ilk. They are far more interested it seems with being the first to post something like this than making sure its factual.

First Cliff Notes, then USA Today and now the web.

Bravo on your Trojan Horse blog

You're obviously correct that Drudge isn't a lefty, but the previous commenter is correct also that the Web is littered with lefty sites where people condemn the imaginary right-wing outrage mentioned in this guy's various fake articles. In other words, as Sean would say, "Stop, you're both right."

This whole thing reminds me of the NY Times/Bush doccuments flap. Again, the left got information that were too good to be true (despite being so forged that the Gore campiagn rejected them) and look what happened. The Left always accuses conservatives of living in a fantasy world, but sometimes the reverse it true

Unfortunately, there isn't any "obvious satire" anymore. Anything with enough of a grain of truth to be funny might well be the ravings of a real organization. I initially thought that the Spongebob controversy and godhatesamerica were hoaxes.
The real problem, it seems to me, is the tendency to look for a lunatic and try to link him to a larger movement. Exposing the rantings of Fred Phelps is fine and dandy, but not when a link to godhatesamerica is captioned, "Look at what the Religious Right is up to now!"
In Sullivan's case, he uses the bogus report to demonstrate the mindset of "the forces that sustain them (the Bushes) in power...the religious right." While Sullivan is at least man enough to keep his post online, along with his retraction, I doubt very much that he will reevaluate his view of the religious right. Sullivan likes to believe that they are a bunch of cruel inbreds, so he will continue to believe it, regardless of the facts.

Note the sharp followup:
Conservative Critics of First Lady's Comedy Act Decry 'Hoax' Smear
http://swiftreport.blogs.com/
new...rvative_cr.html
A conservative Christian organization that lashed out at the First Lady's weekend comedy routine is lashing out again—this time at critics who claim that the group's Bible-based panning of Mrs. Bush's jokes and one-liners was itself a joke. Observers say that the high-profile dispute over who can speak for conservative Christians is just the latest in an increasingly heated battle between the Coalition for Traditional Values and its rival, the Traditional Values Coalition.
I guess Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern both reported on this as well.

Drudge probably just linked through some automatic search engine-type thing, then, as he read it, realized it was a fake.
Why is the TVC so pissed off, though?
The best way to show Bush for what he is, is to laugh at him. Either that, or you cry, Julius Jonah Stuhlberg always said.

RE: NY Times/Bush doccuments flap
I'm not sure about which "flap" or "scandal" you are referring to with Gore, BUT
The Dan Rather DOCUMENTS, even if it HAD been 100% real, could not have damaged Bush. It was a non-issue. Everything to lose, nothing to gain. Why run it? Suspicious??
How's this for a reverse backflip:
The Dan Rather DOCUMENTS were ALSO SATIRE, except done as straight news.
ALL the info on Bush going AWOL with assistance from superiors was LONG KNOWN to be factual, but "the papers were secret". Then, the secretary CONFIRMED the info to be factual, as she clearly recalled.
*** She stated that someone copied the CORRECT facts to FAKE documents *** which discredited the Truth about them ... a typical Rovian move like bugging his own office in TX.
BUT
How's this for a DOUBLE-reverse backflip:
This forgery was flippin' obvious, but RATHER -- who once vowed to "kiss Bush's ass" (paraphrase of "he's my president ...") --- intentionally ran it with ZERO FACT-CHECKING, obviously knowing that it would HELP SEAL the BUSH VICTORY.
CBS might be "lib" or might be "con" but it is DEFINITELY CORPORATE AMERICA, and they serve THEIR interests. THIS POINT, media serves the same elite billionaires who run the elections, banks, everything, and the product they sell is YOU, your attention, is critical to grasp the game.
That it was IMMEDIATELY exposed by 'a guy with a website' who had no ability to view the original document, and who was intricately linked with the Media access of the Swift Boat organization is another clue this whole thing was a "sitcom" played out like it was real.

"Incredibly, President Bush heaped praise upon Ozzy Osbourne for his 'accomplishments' like an MTV-VJ. Ozzy who has helped Satan lead untold millions to destruction via drugs, occultism, rebellion and Satanism was given a respectable facelift by Bush before the world media. Ozzy's wife Sharon said in response to Bush's honoring of Ozzy, 'What can you say? It's the most incredible thing that he would even mention Ozzy. It's a bit overwhelming.' Bush praised Ozzy for a string of hits stating, 'The thing about Ozzy is, he's made a lot of big hit recordings: "Party With the Animals," "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," "Facing Hell," "Black Skies" and "Bloodbath in Paradise." Ozzy, Mom loves your stuff.'
"Sadly, while Bush has spent millions of the taxpayer's money fighting against international terrorism he has given moral support and public honor to one of the most accomplished spiritual terrorists and corrupters of youth the world has ever known. For Bush to Support one who unabashedly glorifies evil and praises Satan is unconscionable."

Oh, and by the way --- I am a born-again, Bible-believing Christian and a conservative.
May I end with these words of wisdom from Debbie O'Hara:
If Christians would defend the gospel half as much as they defend the Republican Party, we might have a chance that God would come to our aid. I always hear that it's the liberals and the atheists that are destroying this country, but it's not true. What happens in this country is truly in the hands of God's people. We need to hold our representatives accountable, especially when they say they are Christians but their actions show otherwise. The Bible DEMANDS that we do so.
"What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you." 1 Corinthians 5:12, 13

The above event (President Bush's sick joke, not Laura Bush's gag) was reported by Drudge, but lest anyone think it was a "hoax," it was also reported by ABC News, USA Today, and WorldNetDaily, and C-SPAN has made it available on video.
