I think maybe Blair (police chief) is being under cautious. The whole quote of "stay where you are" was "stay where you are and go about your usual business."

New York City is planning on doing random searches of passenger bags in the city's subway system. The police commissioner promised not to egage in "racial profiling" and instead search "every certain number of people."

Well that may satisfy the ACLU...but does it really make sense to do it that way? Should they really search the purse of the 85 year-old woman instead of the 25 year-old man in front of her just because her number came up and his didn't???

Random searching makes no sense because its only real value is as a deterrant, and suicidal terrorists are not deterrable. Period.

Madrid bombers weren't suicide bombers...but you're right, if they want to bomb the trains, they'll bomb the trains regardless of what precautions are taken. That said, I don't think deterrence is the goal--I think fostering public confidence is the goal. Make people think that they're safe, and they'll continue to ride the trains. I think that's the best that we can do right now and so that should be our focus. If the bombers make it to the train station, it's already too late...we need to stop them before they get to the station. Vive le Patriot Act!

When non-Arab looking individuals start to blow shit up, then we can conduct "random searches". Until then, racial profiling is what is needed.

you mean like Ted Kaczynski? or all the IRA bombings over in England back in the day? I know that the KKK has done some bombings as well, also, you realize that people from Iran aren't Arabs right, and one would presume that at least some Islamo-facist terrorists come from Iran.

Gravatar And that white Christian guy driving a Ryder van looks A-OK to me. No need to stop him and hold him up.
