In my mind these stories are more important to read than others, such as is the case of the D.C Madam or stories about the sick individuals who extenguish the Light of another, for no apparent purpose than to attain some narcissitic momentary fullfillment, it is a brutal and harsh reminder to one and all to take heed and to take care and to talk to your children, because these special lights (people) are all that is really important. |

Is it just me, or does it seem a little risky for an attractive young girl to post various remote locations where she runs and bikes alone? I realize this may have had nothing to do with the circumstances leading up to her death, but still, as a mom, it sets off my alarm bells. |
I was hoping you would cover this one, Steve - this happened around the corner from me. She was a beautiful spirit. Prayers and sympathy for her family and friends. |
I did know Ira by way of her attending my wedding as a guest of a relative. I can say without a doubt that she was one of the nicest people I have ever come across. Why someone would want to end the life of someone so young and beautiful (both inside and out) is beyond me. |
they have shown this on Fox News several times all morning asking for help - maybe we will hear something soon - |
No doubt about it when they say remote area, the location is very remote and I can think of no reason why a young pretty girl would travel to an area such as this. There are numerous places around the lake(s) where High School and College kids hang out and this would not be one of them. It is also right off the Interstate, in fact it's the first exit entering Gaston County from Charlotte on S I-85. The road leading to this lake area is less than 500 yards from the Interstate exit. I hope this mystery is solved soon for her family and friend's sake. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those that knew and loved her. |

They have now added a 3rd stop she made that morning. In between the visit to the credit union and the coffee shop, she stopped at the Goodwill store. There's a news video at aol, but I was unable to copy the link here. It included footage of her car and the river bank. |
She was a beautiful girl. I hope they solve this soon. Sounds like they've made some progress. |
I knew her. She was not merely young and beautiful (I'm not saying you think that.) She was a remarkably selfless person and truly a bright spark that has been extinguished. |
Sigh! That's me posting as anonymous at |

Has anyone questioned her ex-boyfriend Zach Wendel? He was really distraught over their break-up. A month or so ago. |
I don't know. Surely they have. I noticed that she'd removed photos of Zach from her Photobucket. Some were linked from her LJ, but the placeholders now say 'image removed.' |
Fox's On the Record did a great piece tonite regarding this case. If anyone is interested and missed it try to catch it when the show airs again in the morning hours. She interviews the police and goes to the crime scene as well as to other locations the victim visited hours prior to her death. |

Here is a link to the local paper where the jet skiers that found her body were interviewed |

yeah they have questioned zach. he was in chapel hill all day with his dad. |
The only thing that makes any sense for motive is the carjacking theory, unless this is somehow personal. Someone got into her vehicle either invited or by force. That much is obvious. I do agree with the hypothesis Greta had the other night that she may have been driving and intentionally drove down the enbankment either to try and injure the person or because she was being strangled from behind and it was a reaction of self preservation and desperation. It appears she then tried to jump out of the car to escape and was then caught on the ground near the car in a life and death struggle. |

Here is a video link of Mt Holly Police at the scene describing the location of vehicle and where the body was found. |

"No offense meant, julia, but I hope there is some type of corroborating evidence to prove where he was. It is an unfortunate fact that some parents would provide their child with a false alibi, even if they knew that the kid did the crime. Not saying he did it, just not ready to count him out as a likely suspect." |
I just want to make it known about Zach. I know him personally, I knew Ira personally, she was one of my best friends. Zach is one of the sweetest people I've ever met, and they remained close friends even after they broke up, even if their relationship was rocky. There is absolutlely no way that Zach is capable of hurting her, he loved her too much. Also, I spoke to him that day and he spent the entire day with his family. |
Sarah- I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. Ira seemed like an innocent girl, full of life and talent, and she is gone way too soon. Hopefully they will find who did this very soon. He's obviously a very dangerous person. |

Thank you all for commenting. I'm Ira's brother. I've been told that this never really gets easier, but somehow the positive energy of everyone's support has made it much easier for my family to go through this horror. I urge everyone who hears about my sister's beautiful life to help those who wish to climb out of poverty, to stress the value of education, and to reach out to your local community. We need to ACT NOW to prevent others from experiencing the anguish we're going through. This is not a comment on the investigation, but rather it's a call to action against social problems that lie at the root of most violent crime. |
Pavel- Know that many people are praying for you and your family and I am sure that the police will not stop until they find the person responsible. Such a senseless crime. You're right about the social problems facing most perpetrators of crimes such as this. They have turned to crime as a way of life, as a way to deal with poverty, or to entertain themselves after dropping out of school, instead of becoming productive. |

I met Ira last summer working in Denali National Park. I can say she was by-far one of the most beautiful people I ever met inside and out. I recall telling my roommate up there, 'Her boyfriend is the luckiest and most envied man here.' I didn't know her more than 4 months. But I can recall the last time I saw her as she neatly wrote down my information in her book. She was so independent and adventurous. She took a small 3 hour hike with me and some other girls once. I remember on her days off she'd go hiking alone to be with nature, and if anyone could do it alone, it would be her. She was small and beautiful and whoever could do this to her had to have been a complete monster, I don't know how you could have done anything to Ira but love her. This all happened months ago, but I just found out, and it's hard for me to believe that the last time I saw her, I didn't think she would be dead less than a year later. |
