It astounds me that these animals are even considered for release.....WTF

People will show you who they are. We need to LISTEN. The fact that so many of these miscreants get out of prison, only to continue their carnage says a whole lot more about us as a society, than it does these evil pieces of shiite. They've shown us their behavior - bleeding hearts don't want to believe it.

I agree. This man obviously feels no emotions towards others, so he will never have normal human boundaries.

Eerie!

Geez Mapreez, are you kidding? What a terrifying story. Alt should never see the light of day, much less the streets. Citizens in the area in which he is released need to form ALTWATCH, whose sole civic function is to do what our legislaturtes and public safety officials failed to do; protect us all from the likes of ALT. Time for domestic minutemen to monitor not just our porous borders, but the criminals inside our borders.

Speaking of that puke, Duncan - this from his last post on his blog:

"I hope to complete this journal before I die (soon) or turn myself in (I still might do that, I think it is the right thing, but of course, I'm not sure)."

Yeah, well, Mr. Feelings didn't kill himself, nor did he turn himself in, did he? In fact, he's doing the opposite of the "right thing" and he's prolonging the inevitable. Even trying to postpone his trial for the murder of Dylan, and the kidnapping Shasta (in addition to the other, HORRIBLE things he did to them) for another year. He makes me sick, and ANYONE who refuses to see what a sick, evil, pervertes f*ck he is, is sick and perverted as well.

Why wouldn't they go back to killing? If you spent 14 years in prison and you get out and the only thing you face again if you kill and get caught is more prison time, do you really care? Prison life would seem normal to you by then and not so much as a punishment. Why don't we just take these guys out back and rid this world of this evil? O h I forgot, they have rights. They have the right to take the lives of others, but we don't have the right to take theirs to protect other innocents...yeah.

Am I missing something here? What do you mean she is not allowed to know where he lives? He is a sex offender, we ALL should be able to know where he lives.

I wondered about that, too. It doesn't make any sense, to me.

I lived in Santa Cruz in the early 70's when it was called the " Murder Capital" 3 serial killers all in the same small area and same period of time. I was acquainted with one of Kemper's victims...it was a very frightening time. Hitchhiking was often the only mode of transportation for the many college students and young people of that area. Such horror in such a beautiful little town. Whatever stars and energies were aligned in Santa Cruz during that time, I pray never occur again.
We must remove and KEEP these predators from our society.
My heart goes out to Jammey Schick.

Frightening stuff. The top priority of our penal system should be to keep people like this from ever reentering society. No second chances.

What I think is most frightening, is that the majority of your commenters on the Maddie thread, are so hell bent on blaming the parents that they ignore that there ARE monsters out there.

I really wish you would shut them down, but its your call of course. My vote was its your blog..

Agreed Melissa! The young lady who just testified in front of congress the other day specifically stated that the "boogie man" is REAL. This was of course from her first-hand experience with him.

Soobs- I totally agree about the "bleeding hearts" too. They are the ones with big fat blinders on because life is simpler to live in a fantasy land. Problem is, it doesn't matter how cushy their cells are or how much we wish the bad guys away, we aren't going to win them over with kindness or wake-up and find the world without them in it.

People need to wake the eff up, because the current system of lock-up, let-out, lock-up, let-out, doesn't seem to be working too well.

Is there some kind of pressure the public can put on the decision makers to make sure Daryl Alt is never released?

If D.Alt does get out maybe someone should put a website together like the one the parents/lawyers did in CA for the perv who liked to "snuggle" with young girls. The public monitored his movements and posted his whereabouts. That's only a temporary fix at best, but maybe it would help the families in the immediate vicinity until more can be done.

It's insane, how many chances do they get to kill people?

How in the world do you murder your father and serve only six years? What kind of deal do you work to excuse away a second murder? There is collective madness running rampant through our judicial system that thinks criminals that commit violent crimes can go to jail and prove in just a few years they are rehabilitated and ready to reenter society. The tiger does not change his stirpes just because you put him in cage. The tiger is still a dangerous animal with a constant potential to kill -- just like the too many career criminals. We are allowing these criminals to hone their deviant skills while incarcerated and educating them in how to manage the judicial system.

As for Duncan, I am trying to learn to be patient with his case, because, someday, there must be some justice for the horrific crimes he committed. If there was ever a poster boy for how twisted and broken the system has become, he is the man for the job. Every aspect of his personal life and criminal career is testimony to how we have lost control of the sytem and at the expense of too many innocent people.

I don't see this ending well at all. Some unsuspecting innocent woman or child is going to get hurt and/or killed and it pains me that we all know this but can do nothing about it.

Well This truly was a nice thing to read, looking for "Fun Events For Halloween In Minesota." :/ Me being a 15 year old, and wanting to go out and do something with my friends this Halloween didnt help my case

Shrink-Think Stinks
"I have almost no faith in the ability of the psychiatric profession to tell me if somebody is safe. I don't know if psychiatrists for the defense are incompetent or if they're attempting to maintain a fa çade to collect their check. They're just terrible, they're constantly releasing maniacs into society. They have the worst track record of any profession," said a Chicago homicide detective interviewed in Connie Fletcher's "What Cops Know."

Many psychotherapists and courts worldwide just can ’t grasp the obvious: violent predators are simply broken and cannot be fixed – they’ll be evil from the cradle to the grave. Time and again, officials project their own values, beliefs, and morals onto predators without realizing how different – how evil – a psychopath’s mindset is.

The shrinks say, “As long as they take their daily medication, they’ll probably be no threat to others.” Sorry, Doc, “probably” isn’t good enough. Besides, these barely functional mental patients often don’t take their daily medication. The shrinks brazenly place one patient’s “well-being” above the safety of the general public.

A report into the case of a schizophrenic who stabbed a young woman to death after he was released … has found there were "serious shortcomings" in his care.
… Winston Williams stabbed 25-year-old Katie Kazmi 77 times… in 1999. He had been sent to Broadmoor in 1979 after stabbing two people… but was released back into the community in 1991.
"[MP] Martin Salter said: "I've never heard such a damning indictment of the incompetence and complacency of officials responsible for supervising an extremely dangerous and violent individual."
… TVHA chief executive Nick Relph said: "This was a tragic event and we offer our sincere and unreserved apologies to Ms Kazmi's family. "It is vital that we learn from these mistakes and ensure that we do everything we can to avoid this happening again. Excerpted from The BBC (UK) – 11 July 2002

Such disgusting ”sincere and unreserved apologies” insult the victims' families. Keeping maniacs locked away forever is the only sure way to "avoid this happening again." But what do the negligent officials care? They didn’t lose a loved one forever – they were just momentarily embarrassed while mouthing their, "Oops, sorry about that.”

Past behavior (in the real world) is the best predictor of future behavior. Behaving properly while in an institution is not predictive of future behavior in the real world – especially when it comes to a monster. But these detestable officials arrogantly brush aside such blatantly obvious logic and are unleashing a de facto homicidal maniac in their experiment on an unwilling group of guinea pigs: us.

Since bartenders are held legally responsible for the actions of the customers to whom they serve too much alcohol, why aren ’t judges, parole boards, and psychotherapists held responsible for the actions of the fiends, monsters, and maniacs they so recklessly release into other people's neighborhoods?

If an official is so sure that the supposedly rehabilitated felon/patient is now safe to live amongst us, then why not require that he move into that official's home for the first five years and live cheek-to-jowl with that official's spouse and children? How soundly would they sleep with a supposedly rehabilitated monster living under their roof? Might the officials start whistling a different tune in their parole/release decisions?

First of all Daryl Alt did not kill his dad and stepmom in cold blood. His stepmom was an accident as he was trying to protect her. His dad was just a mistake and he served time for it. Jammey was told he would never be released. Well, as I feel for her case, Daryl was not sentenced to life in prision. He has served his time and should get the right to be released. The story makes it seem as if he is out walking the streets again. He's not. He is in St. Peter under lock and key still.People do change. If a drug dealer can sell drugs and kill people and get out free and clear, some commit crims again and some do not. You do not know what one person will do. If he is released into the public he will be in a halfway house on probation until 2015. Again he was not sentenced to life.

First of all, no one really knows the whole story here. Has anyone bothered to check on his past family and question them? NO!!! So until people hear the true story, maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions about someone. People just go off of what the prosecuters say and 17 yrs ago there was no where near what kind of tests we have now, so people need to look at the whole picture here and say well maybe he didn't do what they say he did. No one knows what kind of person is was or is except for his family and no one bothers to question them.

To paraphrase an old quote, "It's better that a thousand guilty men go free, than one innocent man be imprisoned." I don't agree. While it's surely a tragedy for an innocent man to suffer, it's far worse for a thousand dangerous predators to attack another thousand or more victims. We're talking a thousand-to-one trade-off here, folks. If you or yours were among the thousand or more victims, you'd whistle a different tune.

Iam very sorry for the victims of any crime. DNA can not be proven all times and in the past it has been hard to match DNA and people would get put in prision all the time for crimes they have not commited. All Iam saying is that there are things in Daryl Alt's case that the public does not know. The whole story has not been made public. Not every person in jail is guilty. People who have served their time should have a chance at freedom again. If they re-offend one will never know. You can not go by looks or their past to determain if they will again. People do change and how can they prove themselves when we judge right away?

Kelly, your two posts are very compassionate to Alt, and by extension, to most violent criminals. I suspect it is misplaced compassion - and your compassion should instead be aimed at the potential future prey of paroled violent predators.

If you are really ready to prove your sincerity, you'd open your home to a paroled violent predator to live under your roof for at least 5 years. Let you and yours be the direct guinea pigs for your gamble that the predator is indeed now harmless and trustworthy.

If you're not willing to do so, perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to vote for a violent predator's release into other people's neighborhoods.

I would open my home up to Daryl as he is my uncle. There are some stories out there about him that are not true. The news is saying stuff, but they issue no facts or documentation. Yes, my uncle has done some bad things in his life, but we all have. He has served his time in prision. He is still under lock and key in St. Peter. Who ever told the victim that he would never get out, needs to be put in jail. Daryl was not sentenced to life in prision. The public does not know the whole story, only the bad and what the media wants to tell. They are not interested in the whole accurate story. One one knows when a person will commit a crime. You could tomorrow. People do change their ways. Why be so quick to judge if he is guilty. Just because he was in prision doe not mean he is guilty og the crime they say. You do not know the whole story. You are judging a book by it's cover. There is a level 3 sex offender living my a school in my city. We do not pass judgment on him. We believe that he has change for the better. We let drug dealers back on the street without second guessing it. Some may or may not re-offend. We do not know what one person thinks, we onlt know what we think. No shrink can actually tell you what a person will do. They take eduacted guesses, but it dosen't mean they are always right.

Your uncle is very lucky to have such a loyal niece as you, Kelly. You ’re in a very difficult position – trying to defend a loved one from public scorn. It must be an endlessly uphill battle. That makes you, too, a secondary victim of his crimes.

Since you are inherently subjective in this issue (you ’re his niece), it’s impossible for you to be truly objective about your uncle’s culpability. You’ve seen only his good side (rarely is any criminal 100% bad), and can’t conceive of his bad side. Only his primary victims have seen his dark side.

But objective experts in criminology, psychology, law enforcement, etc. know this maxim: “Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.” Sure, people can (and do) change all the time when it comes to dieting, stopping smoking, etc. but changing a propensity to physically violate innocent people is a far more complex problem. I think you can understand why the general public is very leery of trusting anyone who so flagrantly harmed innocent people in the past.

Beyond the predator ’s primary victims and their loved ones, you are a poignant reminder of his forgotten casualties – the predator’s loved ones. Through no fault of your own, you’ve had an enormous burden thrust upon you. I wish you the best, Kelly.

Hmmm, Anyone wanna shed light on how many sex offenders get released and don't reoffend again? There are plenty that get released back into the public, surely not all of them end up back in the big house.

People hold too true to what the media says, It was known before this article came out that he wasn't going to be released.
