In regards to the 3rd graders, experts have been wrong before.

This is about the 3rd graders: Having lived in GA for 6 years, I can totally see this plot happening. I can see it happening ANYWHERE. I mean, the teacher was MEAN to them...she YELLED at them for standing on a chair. Isn't that just cause? And of course, the parents are likely to say they're not responsible, that the teacher was way out of line for actually daring to discipline their little angels, I'm sure.

Sad. What's worse is that the little hoodlums will be allowed back in school. Just what I'd like for my kids to see. Glad I live in KS

Steve,
In regards to the Salt Lake City girl who was found in her neighbors bathtub.... I wanted to just make a comment on the headline and the lede.

"Former Thai Refugee" is a strange way to modify this person. It makes him sound like he was a former Thai national. "Neighbor" would have made a better headline.

More importantly, both the girl and her alleged killer lived in refugee camps in Thailand . They are both from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

I know that you didn't write this, but I can't stand how sloppy the media is-- and I just needed to vent. Back in the day, copy editors would have been fired for less.

The Deseret News has had pretty good coverage on this. They went all out for Elizabeth Smart and while this coverage didn't equal that, it was still thorough and thoughtful.

In re: Waycross Plot.

Someone should send Dr. Louis Kraus a copy of Lord of the Flies.

Larkin -- I'm with you on the media's sloppiness. It drives me bananas. To me, it's a given that the AP (for instance) will screw up the spelling of names, correct locations, and sometimes write headlines with painfully misplaced modifiers. I understand why this happens sometimes -- it's all in the interest of speed, getting the story out there -- but that doesn't make me less annoyed when I notice it.

larkin

you said back in the day a copy editor could be fired for less.

they could have been, but it's not likely. newspapers have always had the attitude get it out there, at least it's true today and we can fix it later. the problem is they rarely fix their mistakes.

it frustrates me too.

Apparently this teacher was the Special Education teacher. While a lot of kids in Special Ed are mentally handicapped or suffering from ADHD, mild autism, what have ya--they also dump the severely emotionally disturbed (ie budding psychopaths) in there too.

With regard to Zimmermann - I read an article that first claims the cops went to the location to do a welfare check. Later in the story, it says that she was living with her fiance, and he called police. Normal contradiction???

http://tinyurl.com/2wqvme

"Brittany Sue Zimmermann, 21, was found dead in her apartment near the University of Wisconsin-Madison shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday by police called to check on the student's welfare."

"Brittany Sue Zimmermann lived with her fiance in the downstairs apartment of the house where her body was discovered, according to family members. Kim Heeg, an aunt, told the Wisconsin State Journal that Gonnering had called police after finding his fiance's body. "

Don't know, Soobs. I do know that her boyfriend has been cleared. He's not a suspect. I think Madison may have its own resident Great White Land Shark, AKA serial predator.

The "snatching" and murder of Hser Nay Moo sadly reminds me of the circumstances of Destiny Norton's murder. This type of crime breaks my heart.

DP,
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the Burmese kids in the apartment complex used to hang out regularly in the apartment where the little girl was killed.

Apparently it is a three-level townhouse and the supsect's "area" was in the basement, where his roomates never went. Esar Met, the suspect, had only lived there for about a month, though the other four residents knew the girl's family well.

And of course, the suspect's mother thinks he's innocent. (He has confessed through a translator.)

It's so heartbreaking. This letter . . . well, read it for yourself, but have a tissue handy.

Brittany Sue Zimmerman case:

Joel Marino was found stabbed at home on a sunny day at one o'clock

There is a suspect sketch on the above link.

Could the manner of death be hushed due to a possible connection?

again Brittney Sue Zimmerman case:

This is taken from the Wisconsin State Journal:

"Police also are investigating whether there is a connection between the homicide and an incident just before 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of West Washington Avenue in which a man entered a house shared by several UW-Madison students just after four people left the residence, leaving the door unlocked. The intruder left quickly after a student who remained in the house told him to leave, other residents said."

Thanks for the links, Larkin. I did get a bit choked up when I read the letter. The whole situation is just so senseless. After the hell those people all went through in those refugee camps, it just doesn't make sense that the trust in their own community would be shattered by a crime such as this. That sweet little girl, her father's only daughter...it's just so damn sad.
