I just wanted to point out as a military family member that we also write and say the date like that... This person could be military as well.

Steve, Sadly you are correct about panicky, psychopathic baby daddies. Sleuther's are asking who is the baby daddy and why isn't he screaming to high heaven about the murder of his unborn child? That in itself makes him the most likely suspect.
Whether the letter writer is really connected to this case or not, IMO, he's scary as h*ll. If he hasn't yet done what he claims...he certainly wants to.

LOL...yes Steve... I have seen quite a few typewriters hanging out in military offices! It will be interesting to see what the alleged fiance has to say about all of this, as he is allegedly stationed at Bragg. Also, it seems that the military lost track of her a day before her death. That is just unbelievable that a well being check was not initiated by her company commander when she did not show for formation on the 16th. That is just not the way things usually go down in the military...especially with her being pregnant and also not keeping barracks housing.

Theory is that Megan rented the room to spend with another person I assume would be baby daddy. You'd have to wonder where baby daddy is and if he's alive and well. The real Zodiac killer would have murdered both of them.

Re "17 June," I don't think that's necessarily British, or military. To my knowledge, only in the US is the month written first. Maybe other countries do it too, but in the several European and Asian ones I've visited 17 June would be standard.

poorpaula...I have been part of a military family now going on 17 years and we always say the date like that even in speaking. Today is 28 June. It is like that on rosters that you sign in and out of, etc. and pretty much everything military including the onpost schools when we sign our kids in and out for doctor appointments, etc...

Please notice the inconsistant usage of the day/date format. In the header, the day comes before the month, as is expected for either persons from Europe or in the military.
Later in the same letter, in the sentence below, however, the date is written exactly as an American non-military person would write it:
"The following is to inform that I am responsible for the dead body that was found on Saturday, June 21 @ 1130 in room 143 at Fairfield INN by Marriott off Skibo RD."
If letter writer was consistent, he or she would have still written the date as 21 June.

Can EVERYONE please, just for the sake of my blood pressure, drop the issue of the dating? For the record: my father was in the military full-then part-time for more than 40 years. Neither he nor anyone else in my home typically used that style of date when writing it down. This was because Dad tended to keep home and work separate, right down to minor details like that (though he did take excellent care of his personal effects and could make the proverbial bed so neat you could bounce a quarter off of it).
I ask because I acknowledged already to nurse that I didn't think of that, and because it's a very minor element of this story. Yet people often pick over and argue about the minor elements while missing the bigger picture. I think the comment that "Anibal" left on Bonnie's blog is potentially much more interesting and possibly significant.
Of course, if Mr. Patino-Lopez is still in Germany, it's moot. But I got the impression from the way Anibal worded his post that Lopez was back in NC.

Wral has an update.
A military spokesman says a soldier at Fort Bragg in North Carolina is a person of interest in the death of a pregnant servicewoman whose body was found in a motel bathroom in Fayetteville a week ago.
Lt. Col. John Clearwater said Saturday that the soldier is training at a school where special operations ranging from raids to reconstruction projects are taught. Clearwater says the student has not been charged with any crime.

As for Annonymous...interesting.. I bet the POI is in a school to specialize. Fort Bragg is home of airborne assault units as well as special ops. If the POI is an engineer that certainly fits with "raids" and "reconstruction" as engineers are especially specialized in all types of bridge building, etc... If the POI is indeed this same e5 named by the tipster it would make sense to go to a specialty school after commanding a platoon as E5.

I am a military wife and started to freak out when I saw the possible serial killer connection. The more I am about 2 hours away from Ft. Bragg. The more I read the letter, the more I believe that it is a military member. 1130 means 11:30 a.m. Military members rarely use "civilian" time, even when speaking with civilians. Also, the date is also the way the military would write it. It would be written 170608 or 17 June 2008 in military style. I do believe that this is an attempt by Touma's killer to thwart the investigation. And, most work centers have computers, but still use typewriters on site as well.

After thinking about thinking about the murder and keeping an open mind as all investigators do. I came up with the idea could it have been suscide? By the context of the letter it said "I basically, sat there and watch while investigaters were on site." Could she have made a plot to pin it on her babies-daddy? Did she want a reason to get out of being a single mother without getting an abortion? All these questions arise.
HOWEVER, according to sources they have already declared homicide, so with that in mind they can scratch that thought, however the autospy still hasnt confirmed anything. I think its still in the air, and Why would she have killed herself IF she did. There are sick people out in the world that do that, but it takes a lot of reasons for someone to go through with that.
I AM NOT SAYING ANYTHING SHE DID IT OR NOT UNTIL EVIDENCE CONFIRMS OTHERWISE.
I don't know any other facts, and im not a police officer so my opinion is that of my own and i am entitled to it.
I hope they come up with some hard evidence so they can take this sick human out and make this world a safer place to live.

It looks like the letter reproduced in the Fayette Observer was actually a carbon copy.
For you youngsters, back in the day before the ubiquity of the computer if a person wanted multiple copies of a document a sheet of extremely thin paper with one side coated with a pressure-transferral compound would be placed between two sheets of typing paper before the package was rolled into the typewriter and the document typed. The pressure exerted on the top level of typing paper would cause the compound to transfer to the lower sheet but the image would be fuzzy because the pressure would have been diffused by being transferred through the fibers of the top layer of paper. By the time you would get to the third or fourth carbon the letters would be very hard to read. This could also obscure identifying details of the typewriter used.
The last time I looked for carbon paper on the civilian market I couldn't find it.

I would concur with some of the other posters about how the date is written as well as the time. Military members do not use colons between the hour and minute times either.
Unfortunately there isn't more information in the letter. If the murderer is military, they very well could have killed previously in other locales, moving before police could figure anything out and then killing in a new region or even perhaps overseas.

This would not be the first case of a wife/girlfriend being killed at Ft. Bragg, and it's always the s.o. Blaming it on anonymous psychos reminds me of the "Fatal Vision" murder. Maybe this guy never read the whole book and doesn't realize that defense ultimately didn't pan out. I went to high school there - lots of violence, family problems, drug use. Most military guys, like my Dad, have no trouble keeping their military training in context. But there are those who can't, which is a huge problem. Because they are trained to kill.

If he really is a serial killer and a fan he will supply evidence of past killings that will be trackable then there is a need to look for this person.

I am from Fayetteville, NC and have been following the Zodiac Fan case closely. While I can see everyone's reasons for wanting to point to the military and/or to the baby's father (and in a way I firmly believe that this is a simple case of a man who didn't want to father a baby) - however, part of me has major problems with that assumption.
Why does everyone assume that the date and time given on the letter automatically points to the military? I, myself, know how to use military time. . . and am guilty of writing my date in a dd mon year format (I have done this automatically since taking college courses). Police Officers and lots of other professionals use military time. . . not to mention the vast number of civilians who work closely with the military.
I would also like to point out that while everyone is quick to jump on the "she knew her killer" band wagon. I would like to remind everyone that her hotel is located within site of the mall. Is it not likely that the murderer spotted her shopping? I know, I know. . . there were no screams heard. The autopsy reports have not been released as of yet, because they are waiting for toxicology reports. Is it not likely that someone spotted her, wormed their way in, and drugged her? Leaving them with quiet time to do whatever they wanted. . .
I also wanted to point out that the murderer did a bang up job on the copycat note. The style is almost identical. . . this guy has studied the Zodiac. I also wanted to point out that there are hints of other serial killers in this murder. The Lipstick Killer of the 40's not only managed to killed a woman in an apartment without anyone hearing a sound, left a lipstick message on a wall in one murder, and left one body in a bath tub. . . any of this sound familiar?? Let's also not forget that serial murderers are unlikely to murder visibly pregnant women, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. One name comes to mind to prove this point - Sharon Tate.
I really truly hope that this is a simple case of "Baby Daddy Gone Nuts," but if it's not I won't be too surprised. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Megan, and I hope that this is put to rest quickly and quietly.

fan. This is convenient for those officers who think he is dead and for all those young ones who don't have a clue who he is, unless they watched

unwed couples and women with brunette hair. Look at the couple on the beach in Sonoma County. There's an example of a Zodiac kill. The law
enforcement there think he is dead and don't know who he is. So they
wouldn't even try to make the connection. Law enforcement do not
want to open up the Zodiac case, even
when they were given the extra funds
to investigate. They used the money
for other endeavors, apparently. Now
the officers in NC are trying to make the public think it was a domestic case. It's highly unlikely that the
average Joe is going to want to identify with a serial killer, study
his exact methods and leave mesages that he is a copy cat. I don't buy it. Likewise, most serial killers aren't going to target pregnant women
and give credit to another killer. How
many people would leave the Zodiac symbol in the room of their victim and in their communications to the police? The Zodiac never killed a
pregnant woman before. So if this
killer is a copy cat, who is he copying. Not the Zodiac. This is
the REAL DEAL! He is the Zodiac!

a few comments about this case.
1. Though a minor point, the date looks military to me, not "British." DDMMMYYYY format may be European, but Continental. The Brits have only started doing the 17 June format relatively recently. Assomeone else said the 1130 (not 11:30 am) looks military as well.
2. This soldier was assigned to the replacement company at Bragg. Given her specialty as a dental tech,this was undoubtedly just a holding place until she received her final assignment with the dental clinic or a dental detachment unit. I was in a repalcement unit once (in Saudi Arabia of all places) and it took a week for them to find us an assignment. During that time we had no duties or responsibilities. This was probably the status of this soldier as well. With her pregnant status, they may have given her more latitude as far as missing formations. She wolud have been in casual status. Soldiers in this status are often given busy work or given small job details. She was probably left alone because of her health status. She may also have been planning to take leave related to the pregnancy before receiving a permanent assignment.
3. The scenario of the killer being the boyfriend/ father seems to fit. If the cited suspect left Bamberg for Bragg in December, that's 6 months before the murder. She's 7 months pregnant. Undoubtedly when he left she didn't know she was pregnant. He may have thought he'd never see her again, but she got an assignment to Bragg (probably not hard to do-- it's a large post) and that may have been her death warrant.She probably took the motel room for privacy sake. Unfortunately she got too much privacy. I think, as is not uncommon, she misjudged the baby's father. Where I live in Kansas (near another Army post), another pregnant woman did the same thing. After he failed to kill her once with a bomb, this woman foolishly moved in with him, never suspecting him. A week later he shot her and blamed it on an "intruder" (not the Zodiac). The police weren't fooled.
4. The Zodiac connections are weak. Even though the crimes are old, they are popular and known even to people too young to remember or not from SF. There was a movie only a year or two ago and the two books have always been popular as has the website. But the MO is different-- Zodiac crimes were outside and sudden, violent attacks. This one seems to have been much more personal. The Zodiac letter style is not hard to semi-imitate. Write impersonally, almost clinically about the crime, brag about your comptence and insult the police. I'd be very surprised if the killer murdered before. Has there been a rash of pregnant, motel murders?

If the engineer sergeant is the POI, I doubt he was in psops training unless he was changing his MOS (military specialty). Bragg is not just the home to special operations units and schools, but also a corps headquarters and the 82d Airborne Division. The 82d has four brigades. Each brigade has two maneuver battlaions in it, each with an engineer company. In the 82d alone, therefore, are 8 engineer companies. The corps undoubtedly has several engineer battalions (3 companies) and there is probably a post support engineer element. There were a lot of places for an engineer to be assigned.
The crime to me does not display any special training, either engineer or otherwise. The only special feature is that the killer managed to get the drop on the victim, implying that he knew her. He probably forced her into the tub and drowned her or choked her first then placed her in the tub. The only specialized features to the crime itself was sociopathy.

John, so far they've reported that the suspect was def. in psops -- but they haven't named the suspect. It may or may not be Edgar.
So you raise a good point -- Edgar Patino Lopez may not be under suspicion -- it could be another soldier entirely.

I see your point, but once again I have to disagree. I am a young and fairly attractive woman who has two children. I'm from a small southern town and have a naive tendency to put trust in other people. . . just to be good and moral. Looking back - I can think of countless times that I have put myself in situations that could have been potentially dangerous. I have let strangers who had broken down cars come into my home to use my phone, I have pulled over in the rain to give someone a ride, or stopped in a parking lot at night while walking to my car to give a homeless person my spare change. . . some of these things I did while I was pregnant. Why is it so unfeasible that Megan was the same way? Is it not possible that she was naive and caring too? That someone could have easily taken advantage of her?
I also think that the fact that the note MAY have been written on a type writer shouldn't be taken as a military only oddity. My mother and my grandmother-in-law both own word processors, which do look almost identical to type writer print. I have seen no official reports that say that the note was written on a type writer. I'd also like to point out that anyone can snatch up a type writer at a flea market, Good Will, or other second hand store (which are abundant here in Fayetteville).
I would also like everyone to know that the POI suspect is not being held by the police and is not on lock down by the military. From reading the news reports I am naturally supposing that this man is the baby's father. If there were any evidence or even circumstantial evidence that he had done it. . . wouldn't he at least be detained??
I have read several other websites where people have been discussing the murder. Lots of people are saying that the Zodiac link is a weak one. Of course it's weak. This guy isn't claiming to BE the Zodiac. . . he's claiming the Zodiac to be his role model. That the Zodiac is his mentor doesn't mean necessarily that he is going to copycat Zodiac's murders. Maybe the Zodiac is his mentor simply because he got away. His letter was very close to the Zodiac's style. He wrote 2008 using symbols, he taunted the police, he was vague, detached, and gave critical info known only to himself and to police. . . I'd say that's as close to knowing Zodiac's style as you can get.
Anyway, as I said before, I'm hoping that the obvious answer is the right one. . . but I won't be surprised if it's not.

He is a person of interest. He is not a "suspect"...yet. Interesting persons are not detained.
The first autopsy is done and the military is conducting theirs. I have a feeling (just a feeling mind you and my opinion only) that after the military is done with its' autopsy we may see more action in this case in terms of an arrest.

Steve and John, very interesting about the carbon paper! I remember that stuff....and believe it or not it is not hard to find in all of my own military paperwork. If the POI is in fact the killer he would have tons of carbon paper from his move overseas! The transportation paperwork still uses it (the itemization sheets that the moving companies use to list boxes, etc)

I'm going with the the coverup story myself. Has anyone else really thought about the fact that the letter is dated 17 Jun and the writer is saying he was at the scene while the police investigated, but they didn't even find the body until the 21st. He's really talented if he can see into the future!

Steve, John, and nursebeeme. . . are you speculating that the paper is carbon paper? I've researched and can't find any articles that says the paper was carbon. The only references I can find that relate to the actual letter are newspaper articles. The Fayetteville Observer article that very first released the letter states that they made a copy of the letter before handing it over to the police. . . so the letter we have all seen is actually a copy of a copy. I would love it if any of you could post a link to a site that has more info.
Also. . . Amber - the letter is dated as June 17. The Do Not Disturb sign was posted on the door on June 17. The murderer does say that he watched the police as they investigated on site at the motel on the 21st. However, the letter was not post marked until the 24th. I personally think that the killer started the letter on the 17th, finished it on the 21 (possibly later), and then mailed it on the 24th.

No. I was speculating that a carbon was used to lay between the original and copy. I don't believe anyone has stated outright that it was a carbon copy. That could, however, explain the "black substance" the Fayetteville paper said was on the envelope and paper.

The Zodiac has claimed that he has killed over 40 (plus) people, many
years ago. To my knowledge, he has
never left a clue or his symbol inside
a building where he has killed someone. Maybe he killed her outside of the motel and then put her body inside. I don't know what evidence was found inside the motel. Does anyone know? Is there evidence that
she was killed inside her room?
Since all of you are spending so much
time on the time issue, I would say that this is the mind set of the real Zodiac. I don't think an amature would do this.

Another note. The Zodiac used to wear military boots. If he was in
the military, then that would explain
why he wrote his date is this fashion. He most likely was in the military in the 60's. I think he has you all fooled. Why would you
believe a sociopathic serial killer?
I think he has you participating in his game. Maybe he is reading these blogs in amusement just as he likes watching the police at the crime scene.

I did make a qualified statement that the reproduction of the letter in the paper *looked* like a carbon copy. I don't know that it is, but it sure has that look.
I think it is a real typewriter, Cassie, not a word processor -- and used by somebody not accustomed to it either. If I HIT THE CAPS LOCK KEY AND TYPE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 on my computer I get the numbers. On a typewriter I would get ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( !) or something approximating that. I have an electric typewriter and an electronic typewriter that I used before laser printers got cheap. If I remember correctly, the electric one would give me the symbols above the numbers numbers if I hit the caps lock while the electronic one would give me the numbers, and I would expect to see that functionality in a word processor as well -- but I don't have access to one so I can't test my guess.

She emailed me when she got to Bragg saying she got there and she would be staying with some friends that were stationed here with us that we knew! She never once told me that she was staying in a hotel until she found some kind of housing. This whole thing remains a mystery to me and im just impatiently waiting for the results of this autopsy to come back so they can start this investigation because i believe in my heart that Edgar Patino had something to do with this! May her and Tristen rest in peace because they are forever in my thoughts and prayers."
That all brings it home, hearing the name of the baby. I think Edgar thought he was extremely smart and I'm betting he never started the process for divorce. It seems from what others have commented that their relationship deteriorated as soon as 1) he went back to states 2) he realized she was pregnant. I'm guessing if he was cheating on a wife that Megan symbolized fun, single life, no pressure, and as soon as she was pregnant it all blew-up. Just MHO of course, I'm sure we'll have a better grasp on what happened tomorrow.
If by some strange chance the baby daddy is not involved than I would look at people who work in and around hotel and know the hotel policies, such as if the DND signs are honored for a period of time or typically ignored after 1-2 days of not cleaning. They would also have access to room and knowledge of whether she was alone and how long she would be there. They would also have authority to enter room with permission from Megan w/o causing suspicion or bringing her guard up. But, it seems the baby daddy is best choice, especially with choice of Psyche Ops training. Looks like he only got through the 101 class and hasn't studied "red herrings".

Regarding the former reply re the
Zodiac. He would be a "Baby Boomer"
and not in a nursing home. He is
not dead. If he were on his death
bed, he most likely would have revealed his identity since he likes
the attention. I think he shot the
couple on the beach in CA a year ago.
The Zodiac wouldn't be stupid enough
to put his DNA on the stamp, or any other place. Not in these times. He
did in the 70's, once. So the police already have his DNA. But most wouldn't know to ask about it.

DUDE! Psyops...if EP is indeed the killer and the soldier that is currently enrolled in special forces/psyops that has been labled a POI as well as having his house searched...well...he FOR SURE could be capable of using his words to throw the investigation the other way. Psyops has a lot to do with writing and communication.
Also, Zodiac did not leave dna...but if you read the warrants they took DNA swabs from the victim in this case.
The ts he didn't cross and the i's he did not dot will eventually come right up and put a hat on the ass that he is

Sandhill. . . I 100% agree. I find it difficult to believe that someone's lover could murder them in this manner. Had Megan been shot, stabbed, strangled, or beaten in the heat of the moment. . . I would be the first one to say that her boyfriend was the one who did it. However, there is nothing in this case that screams out crime of passion to me.

If this letter is a typewritten carbon copy, this would be like the Zodiac's first letter to the police after he killed his first victim, Cheri Jo Bates. He typed the letter through maybe a dozen pages of carbon paper to make it difficult to trace to the machine he used. Perhaps "copycat" knew this too.
I think it's probably the baby daddy, but he's still one ice cold SOB.

I'd be very suprised if the father is not the killer. I know murder is the primary cause of pregnant (i.e. healthy young ladies in their biological prime)women deaths, but how many of such deaths are committed by random serial killers? I'd guess zero.
After the smoke clears if the baby father is not arrested, I'll be very suprised... now if someone can solve the murder of two rural Okie prew-teens in Weelekta, that would be a coup. those murders seem to have no reason.

I would like to know from all those who can't get beyond the way the date was typed, what you hope to gain from all your analysis? What difference does it make if it is a military number or not? What can that possibly prove in this case? Absolutely nothing. Can you guys
move beyond this now? Or tell us
what your logic is behind your getting stuck on such a meaningless
issue. If we all agreed it was a military number, now what? It means he had a connection with a military number. Maybe he just likes it. Maybe he's using it to throw people off. Maybe he is or was in the military like a trillion others. Maybe his father or friend or cousin was in the military. Maybe he was in Boy Scouts? The possibilities are endless. What is your conclusion going to bring to the table that has any relevance??? Please explain why

You don't know if he used carbon or not. Maybe you should find out some facts first. But even then. So what
if he used carbon or not. If he is the real Zodiac he probably saved some from the 60's, 70's or 80's. If he
is young, maybe he used his grandmothers or mother's carbon. Carbon can be used for more things besides typing. If he went in to
a local stationary store and purchased carbon paper and he was
video taped by security cameras,
that would be important. But you
don't even know if he used carbon
and it's not likely he went and
purchased it at his local store.
Additionally, he probably lives
in another state, like CA.
Maybe nobody smelled the body because
the body wasn't in the room, until the day they did smell it. I haven't
been following the news so I'm not
up on the latest. What's new?

If you know about the Zodiac, he likes symbols. He put those there
on purpose. Do you really think whom ever wrote the letter, wouldn't
have read it before mailing it? If the writer wanted it corrected, he would
have made the edit before sending it off. The Zodiac likes to play word games.
Additionally, the victim fits his profile. A pretty young woman with
brown hair who is having sex with someone out of wedlock. If she is
with a man, he is killed to.
I haven't been watching the news. Does anyone know what activites and
events she may have attended in NC
before she was killed? Did she have
any car troubles? Someone should check with the towing companies and
the car rentals. Look at her credit cards. Did she take her car in for
repair? Did she make any calls to the police for any reason?

Hi Scotty. You could be right but why would you rule out the real Zodiac? If this person is a copycat, I would think that he would have already killed others. It's hard to imagine that he would start off with a pregnant woman to kill. If it weren't for the copycat serial killer
claim, my first choice would be the baby's father. But the wantabee serial killer obsession just doesn't seem likely for a first time killer that has been leading a "normal" life
w/o crime. I don't know anything about the father/lover however. Does he has a criminal background? Someone has to be really evil to kill
a pregnant woman, who has no other motive than for the thrill of it.
That's why I think the person really is a serial killer. And why not the
real one. I wish I had more
details. I'll try to find more info.

There are many unsolved murders through out the US. with Z like similarities. One is in south east virginia the colonial parkway killer who killed couples in remote lovers lane areas. that is just one example.
Why not the real Zodiac. I believe that if still alive he would be WAY to old. also notice the symbol all of the Zodiac symbols all started and ended in the upper right quad of the symbol. The Copycat letter the symbol appears to start on the upper left quad.

He is not way too old. He is in his early 60's. Maybe your father's age,
if you are young. He is a Baby Boomer. It is doubtful he is dead.
I think the Z has a reason to travel
around the states. He could strike
anywhere. But, most likely he still
lives in CA. If he wants people to think he is a copycat instead of the real person, then he would probably want to change some things around. He likes to challenge law enforcement.
Then he sits back and watches how stupid he thinks they are. This is a fun game to him.

I think the Zodiac has been "mythized" somewhat on this message board. He was not that clever a killer and got away with his crimes mostly because of luck rather than skill. If you do not find a needle in a haystack, that does not mean the needle is clever. For example, early comments claimed the Zodiac would have killed both the victim and her boyfriend. The actual Z attacked three couples. In one case he killed both, but in the other two cases, the male victim survived. Not very smart leaving behind a witness. (The SF murder of a cab driver also left behind witnesses.)
Incidentally, both of these crimes were done out in public in isolated locations, not in motel rooms where the killer was probably seen by many people.
Anyone can claim to be the Zodiac, but the MO, except for the sending of a letter (also done by the BTK and Green river killer and the Unabomber), this crime in no way resembles any of the murders and attempted murders associated with the Zodiac Killer.

I'm chiming in here to say I agree with every point John has made above. I have one correction, and it has nothing to do with Zodiac or this case: this is not a message board.
That's a pro forma correction I feel obligated to make every time someone mistakenly refers to blog comments as a message board. I also correct anyone who leaves a comment and calls what they just did "blogging." Yes, we're having a discussion, and yes, this is a forum of sorts, but not a classic message board. I don't really like many message boards, and even the one I recently began is basically run by other folks.
I'm familiar with John's coverage of another unsolved case, though, and I respect his word whenever he chimes in, and hope others will do the same. He's certainly right in all the points made about the Zodiac killer and how some posts above seem to buy into the myth of a nearly omnipotent killer. Zodiac was anything but. Even though I have no idea as to whether or not he is still alive, I don't like the idea of feeding Zodiac's ego, which is precisely what some of these comments might do, no matter the commenter's actual intentions.

Is it me or does it seem like there have been a lot of crimes left unsolved lately that should have been immediately solved?
The Lane Bryant attack in Chicago had a very unique looking suspect, yet no arrests for months.
Two little girls are killed walking down an obscure rural dirt road in Oklahoma in the middle of the day.No arrests although the suspect pool has got ot be pretty limited.
A pregnant Army dental assistant is strangled or drowned in a motel tub and no arrests after several weeks.
All these and probably several more I've forgotten seem like they should be easily solved with good police work. Granted the first two could have been random but the suspect pool was relatively limited. Maybe the cops have become excessively cautious in their investigations lately for some reason.

Steve, thanks for the nice comments. I have a very high opinion of your true crime efforts, here and elsewhere.
I wish the other case was solved but it is old and complicated, making it very difficult. The killer was seemingly clever enough to have never left a DNA sample with his name attached anywhere, although he left a lot of samples at his crime scenes. See the weblink (homepage) for more info on that crime.
This case does not seem nearly as complicated. My interest in it is that I am an old Army guy and follow most murders involving Army people. If the perps are also Army people, they end up in the military prison on the post where I work, Fort Leavenworth. A couple of years ago a lieutenant colonel killed his wife at Carlisle Barracks (PA) and is now here, for example.
Bragg has had a few murders lately. it is the largest militarty post (I think--Fort Hood may be bigger), so this is probably a function of size and frequent deployments. most of the murders have been spousal crimes, as this one seems to be as well. While there have been a few cases of Army guys killing their wives, there have also been several of wives killing their husbands. In one case the wife got her Army sergeant boyfriend to kill her Air Force (there's an airbase next to Bragg) captain husband. In another, a`wife got her daughter's boyfriend to kill her Army husband.
I have to say I'm still suprised that there have been no arrests. If this was a random crime by a sex killer, it seems like a very odd one, both in the choice of victim and location. So it most likely was not random, but personal. Accordingly, only a small list of people could have a motive. It should be solved by now.
Two other points:
when I go on business trips, I typically put the do not disturb sign on my motel room door when I leave. I don't need daily maid service. with that sign up, they do not ocme into the room in my experience.
Next, there is a mall across the street from the motel. From its parking lot the killer could probably have easily observed the motel from a great distance without looking suspicious. He probably drove by the motel several times a day looking for police cars. Since the location is on one of the main drags, it was probably not even out of the way for him to do so.

John...the Zodiac did try to kill the boyfriends and he thought they were dead. One was stabbed multiple times and he played dead or became unconscious. It was a miracle that he survived. He killed in remote locations. I'm not sure what you mean
when you said remote public places.
Do you mean like Lovers Lane? The witnesses to his
murder in the Golden Gate Park area
(taxi driver?) were two cops who
stopped him walking away from the
scene of the crime. But then they
let him go! They could both identify him. So one cop was shot dead and the other one died
of natural causes early, I believe.
Most likely the killer was stalking the woman from the mall parking lot,
like the previous blogger or poster suspects. I doubt that it was a sex crime however. The Zodiac didn't have
sex crimes to my knowledge and if someone did want to copy him, then they wouldn't kill for sex either.
Why would you suspect that? Who
knows for sure if she was actually killed in the motel room. Does anyone
know this for sure? Is there a link
to any current discovery?

The Zodiac killed in places that were out-of-the-way, yet frequented by the general public: lovers' lanes; a park; and in the case of cabbie Paul Stine, an intersection in a residential section of a large city. The Zodiac probably was intent on killing anyone who could identify him, and with the males attacked, he succeeded twice (Stine and David Faraday).
Officers Fouke and Zelms may have stopped the killer as he strolled away from the scene of the Paul Stine murder, the last one attributed to Zodiac for sure. One of those cops was shot dead later, but not by Zodiac -- which I suspect you know, but your post was oddly phrased.
Since almost all serial murder could very well be traced to an underlying sexual motivation, it may be that the Zodiac succeeded in killing women more often because they were his primary targets. After all, the killing at Lake Berryessa had some sexual overtones, since it was done by knife. I disagree with those who think Zodiac's motivations didn't have a sexual component -- it's been proven too many times that some sort of merging of sexual and psychopathically sadistic impulses can lead to serial murder. The weapons are extensions of the killer, and Bryan Hartnell, who survived the Berryessa attack, described a killer who seemed almost aroused as the killer attacked Bryan's friend, Cecelia Shepard.
Anyone discussing Zodiac here should know their stuff: while little is known about the killer himself, we know a ton about what he did. ZodiacKiller.com is a great resource -- make use of it before you discuss any Zodiac influence and/or connection to this case.
And I reiterate something I've already made clear in a blog post: I'm a hard-core skeptic about the idea that the actual Zodiac committed the Megan Touma murder. I think the idea is ludicrous. I could certainly entertain the theory that a serial killer did it, but I still think the most logical suspect is someone who knew Touma, possibly the father of her unborn child. The odds are with that scenario, and this is an instance where going with the odds still makes sense to me.
As I said before -- if a Zodiac copycat did this (let's call him Xodiaq or something stupid like that), a real serial killer with a track record of other victims, I expect he will write again soon.
But I ain't holdin' my breath.

jade- Last I heard the investigation was headed to Germany and that was why there was going to be a lag in time of updates. They are supposedly interviewing witnesses who knew Megan and the man who is the father of the baby, most likely checking to see if what he has claimed in his interviews lines up with what others knew or witnessed. For instance, if he is married and told LE the relationship was not serious with Megan, yet witnesses claim they were told by Megan he was leaving his wife and they were going to be married, then he's got some explaining to do. (That's just an example though, I have no clue what he has or hasn't said about the nature of the relationship.)

They are interviewing people here in Germany! I am one of them. But i dont think that is why they havent updated anything yet cause we are ahead 7 hours of the states. They are interviewing me because I knew Megan before she met the father, how she met the father, and well while she was with him before they left germany. Well he left germany before her. but yes the father is in NC.

Okay, one thing that is on my mind is...how would this dude know what day and time the police and/or the hotel management would have discovered the body to be able to set in the distance and watch? Could he have been the person who reported the foul odor? Could he have worked at the hotel?

Maybe he transported her body there from another location or maybe he had her body wrapped up and an air purifier on in the unit, until he wanted someone to smell her presence.
That way he would have a good idea when they would arrive. He could watch for them in the shopping center parking lot, while he is stalking other victims. The real Zodiac liked to have fun playing around with the police. He liked to watch them mess up and then notify them that they were incompetent. So if there is a copycat, I guess he is doing a good job at it. There are many people who think he may be the real deal. If he is, it's doubtful they will capture him. The authorities in CA haven't been willing to open his case, even when they were given extra funds to
investigate some solid leads. Who would want to go after a serial killer? Where is Graysmith? I wonder what he thinks.

Does anyone know Edgar? Could he be smart enough to draw attention from himself as the prime suspect by researching and copying the Zodiac killings? Was he also clever enough to make it difficult to determine an accurate time of death? This would give him some flexibility with his accountability. Is Edgar that cleaver?

I haven't read through all of the comments yet but from what I've read the majority seems to think that Edgar should be the prime suspect. Yet it seems to me that everyone is forgetting that his wife could've done it. Being a military wife myself and an "army brat" I often find myself typing dates like that. Especially when you are filling out endless amounts of paperwork trying to help your husband when changing post or adding a child to your dependency list. Although this is a very sad subject. If the wife had done it I would have to commend her on the way she managed to stay off the serious suspect list. There is no greater rage then a woman who just found out her husband has been getting it else were and to top it all of is about to have a child with said woman.

I live in Fayetteville, I don't know if there is a real serial killer around, I don't know if it's the Zodiac killer, and I don't know if it is the babies father. I do know that I'm not involved in the investigation and don't know the evidence except what ever the news says.
But there is another military soldier missing, they think they have found her body but are not sure but for a couple days they thought those cases were connected someway, but now they have their suspects, her husband who was stationed at Camp Lejune and another marine stationed there as well, they are both in the Cumberland County Jail in Fayetteville. There is also a woman missing in Cary, NC from over the weekend she went jogging on Sat morning and never returned. Cary is only approx. 30-40 min away from Fayetteville NC, this is all strange in how it is happening all at the same time.
It is very possible that this could be the work of a serial killer, to say that this is the real Zodiac is a long shot, or this could be just another murder case. I just think it is to early to jump to any conclusions and scare the hell out of everyone in this area. Until there is another letter or some link between any of these cases, I think I'm just gonna watch the news, and listen to what they say

Also, the POI in the Touma case has to be interogated. If he wasn't the police wouldn't be doing their job. I understand that many cases end up being the babies daddy or the babies daddy gf or wife whatever she may be, but that is the routine investigation procedures in any murder case, question the spouse/boyfriend, then go down the line. She was murdered and not saying that he did or didn't do it, Just saying there is no evidence saying he did it

Sorry one more thing, someone had posted previously that whoever wrote the letter needed to learn how to take the caps lock off bc that is where the symbols came in.. It was done on purpose, because the date was not in capital letters, and even if the caps lock was on when you have the caps lock it and you type a number the symbol doesn't appear just the number does, you would still have to push the shift button for the symbols to be written instead of the numbers.. Sorry I wrote so many post

I will grant you that on a computer, me, but that looks more like a typewriter was used to type through a couple of sheets to make a carbon copy. Electric typewriters shift everything when one depresses the shift lock. Smith Corona's current budget electronic typewriter has both shiftlock, which works in the classic fashion (delivering both uppercase letters and symbols above the numbers) and capslock, which gives just uppercase letters.
And if you take a look at the picture at the link Steve gave in his post you will see that the "JUNE" at the top of the letter actually is in all upper case. That's what led me to conclude that the typewriter's user was not familiar with it, mistaking it for a computer and expecting to get numerals instead of symbols.
It is a fairly recent typewriter, because it has a dedicated "1" (that's "one") instead of requiring the typist to use the lowercase "l" (that's "ell") for ones as the typewriter I grew up hammering out texts and short stories on did.

I don't think the father's wife would be strong enough to carry a pregnant woman around, unless she had help. I also don't think an enraged wife with temp insanity would take passive time out to study the habits of the Zodiac.
The wife probably doesn't even know who he is, unless she saw the movie. But she would have had to do a lot more reseach than watching a movie to pull that crime off.
If the others female killings are related, it may not be the Zodiac. I think one of the victims had blond hair and don't believe that the Zodiac targeted blonds. Maybe he was just after any single woman.
So many woman live in denial that anything could happen to them or that they could meet someone evil. Women should wake up and look outside their sheltered environments. Get some protection and stop being alone in places where a stalker can hang
out e.g., parks, malls, bars, etc. Also don't open a door to someone you don't know. Ask who it is with the door closed. If you are at a hotel or motel and you aren't expecting someone at the door, call the front desk to verify that the person was sent up. Otherwise tell them you are not able to come to the door. That's it. It's easy. You are not required to open a door just because someone knocks. Your life is more important than what someone thinks about your actions. Protect yourself!

You are forgetting that we are not talking about the Zodiac Killer we are supposedly dealing with a copy cat, that means that this is a diferent person that targets diferent people, depending on whatever he likes, Just because he uses the Zodiac sign doesnt mean he is goin to target the same type of girls the Zodiac did.What worries me is that they are not releasing any information regarding the case, if they had a person of interest and they interviewed him/her, they should have a conclusion by now.Or at least some updates.

A man was arrested in connection with the murder of Spc. Megan Lynn Touma, 23, an Army dental specialist who was seven months
’ pregnant. She was found dead in her room at the Fairfield Inn near Cross Creek Mall on June 21 2008.
Since then, the authorities have been combing left and right to get her murderer(s).However, on Tuesday; a man was arrested in Hope Mills in connection to the murder.
A soldier, Edgar Patino Lopez of 374 Lairgate Road in Hope Mills, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Spc. Megan Touma according to sketchy details emanating from the police.
Spc. Megan Lynn Touma was discovered by a hotel maintenance supervisor when he smelled a strong unpleasant odor coming from the room. She was found lying dead in birthtub.Touma had recently arrived from a base in Germany.
According to authorities, Touma and a close pal were both stationed in Bamberg Germany before reporting to Fort Bragg.
According to Lt. Col. John Clearwater, spokesman for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the soldier was training at a school where special operations ranging from raids to reconstruction projects are taught.
Police did not clarify whether the close pal which they say was being pursued is Edgar Patino Lopez.
What is rather strange is that some one someone sent a letter to the Fayetteville Observer claiming responsibility for Touma's death.
According to the letter, the author confessed to being an addict killer. Touma was the second pregnant Fort Bragg soldier to be found murdered in the past year.

If this Moron is guilty.......apply the death penalty. The type where he will scream like a girl. I prefer death by hanging like Saddam Hussein or Guilottine like in the old days. I have hope that Texas will apply the extreme form of penalty. I strongly recommend an eye for an eye.....just like in other countries. Man, its long needed so this country of ours shall stabilized and high crimes like this shall be swifly eradicated, by eradicating the source of the crime, and those are the perpetrators. This time I hope Texas will prevail in giving the swift justice the family of the girl rightly deserved.

I am so glad they got him .I had my doubts about him, they are saying he purchased a type writer a day before the post mark on the letter, So I hope he rots in prision for the rest of his miserable life.
