Yes, it seems that there are plenty of people who come here (Seoul, Korea)to teach English as a way to make money as they travel. Many teach "under the table". I am not aware of him being on South Korean news. Seoul has recently become quite an international city.
There are Americans here offering their "free" services in orphanges..mostly fitting the Paedo M.O., but the community doesn't seem to be as leery as us Americans, they welcome anyone who offers free services.
You forgot to mention that New Zealanders and South Africans can also teach in South Korea.

Seems a little culturally biased of you to comment on dog-eating in some Asian countries when we slaughter countless animals of all sorts. I'm told that meat consumption per capita is lower in Asian countries as well.

There are a lot of amazing English teachers in Seoul and many go for the chance to travel, be immersed in another culture and learn as much as they teach.
The thing about Neil is that he was most likely attracted to the fact that when you work overseas, you are literally off the map with the people you used to know and your family unless you work hard to keep the connection. It is much easier for someone like Neil to do what he did abroad, because there are fewer people that are around him there that know him well enough to know when he's acting strangely or out of character.
I'm definitely a BIG supporter of background checks! But I don't think they would have found anything questionable in his past. Children in North America are more protected by our education and judicial system then are children in Vietnam and Cambodia. Two beautiful and incredibly poor countries... and I think that Neil knew that well.
I just hope that they catch him soon. That's the most important part!!

Honestly, foreign ESL schools should look a little more deeply into candidate backgrounds when hiring teachers, particularly if the candidate is older. It's one thing for students fresh out of college to want to travel and experience different cultures. But generally if a middle-aged man is looking for an ESL job far from home, it's because he's considered unhirable in his own country. One of my long-time acquaintances is teaching ESL in Seoul, because it's the only job he could get, having been fired from every teaching job he ever held in the US. He's not a pervert (so far as I know, of course), but he IS a piss-poor teacher. Why do you think no one in the US will hire him? I feel bad for his Korean students, just because they deserve a teacher who has the qualifications of being a good teacher, not just hired because he's a native English speaker.
Just a quick comment about student accusations - this is a big issue, especially for male teachers. Nothing says "F-U" to a teacher who gave you a failing grade like accusing him of sexual assault. Even if the teacher is innocent, they'll likely lose their jobs (and won't be able to get hired elsewhere) because of the investigation.

Not to defend the guy, but the idea he expressed regarding use of cameras in the classroom is not necessarily evidence that the thought of accusations was never far from his mind. Anyone who has taught for a while can tell you that on occasion, when parents don't believe their child could do x, y, or z, but are confronted with video-taped evidence that the child did indeed do it, it's really valuable. It would be a different story if parents today didn't question teachers so much, but then we have teachers like this, so I can't blame them for questioning. Talk about being hoisted on your own petard.

Exactly -- people like Mr. Neil becoming teachers (there is no evidence, incidentally, that he actually abused any students of his own) are the very reason a school might think to have videotape.
I found what he wrote about being a ham and performing for the camera more telling than his admonishment about having evidence on your side if a student or parent made an accusation. His desire to make certain photos public property is what has him in this position as it is.
It would be naïve to pretend that there are not people among the ex-pat community who are there because they needed to escape from some situation back home. Some got divorced, some are in debt, some just needed to go where their lack of social skills would be swallowed up by the cultural gap they would be interacting across...... and a lot of these reasons are perfectly legitimate. Sad, but legitimate nonetheless.
Unfortunately, the same cultural gap sometimes means it takes that much longer to identify the genuine creeps from among the general population of border-line misfits.

Did you read the same article as me? He didn't "just mention" in some completely random fashion that the guy ate dog. It was clearly a judgment, and Syd B is absolutely correct to give the old eyes a rolling. This experience will not damper my enthusiasm for the sauna. I will continue going. I might not want to be there after 12AM, though. Maybe the freaky people come out then. Has anyone else been assaulted like this?
The guy was lucky. I am not violent. I know if he had done something like that to any number of my friends he would have received a black eye or lost a few teeth. It made me a bit more wary. The next morning another Korean guy was complimenting my body. Probably just being nice, but after the last incident it made me feel rather uncomfortable.

I cannot agree more. I'm part of that community, and the days of trusting people because they "say" they are "christian" or whatever, are over. The church that I currently attend, as well as the previous before moving out of state, did/do background checks. And at least one of them makes you wait for ONE FULL YEAR of attendance before serving in any capacity. It's time for us to wise up.
Our previous pastor would tell the congregation not to simply let their children run unattended or expect the ushers to keep a watchful eye (although they tried) because that was Mommy and Daddy's job. Good for him, I thought!!!

I'm Korean American and lived in Seoul for over five years. The sauna story posted on his blog? That would not happen in a gazillion years. First, Koreans are generally shy to talk to foreigners. Second, going to the sauna is not a social event. Third, Koreans *do not* go to saunas at midnight, so unless he was in a gay sex sauna I call BS. Fourth, gay Koreans are scared out of their minds of being outed, so they would hardly "manhandle" or try to force themselves on someone who was obviously not amenable to their advances. I say if the incident had actually occurred, Neil would have been upset only because the guy wasn't 25 years younger than he! He clearly posted it to throw off his scent.
P.S. Dog is only eaten by a small percentage of males, mostly older, and only in specialized restaurants, usually out of the way. We're not serving it at the dinner table, if you know what I mean. I've never eaten it and don't really know anyone who has.
