It's already happened. Maher Arar didn't end up in Gitmo - instead he was sent to Syria. But he was an innocent man, and he was arrested, rendered, and tortured at the behest of the US government.
The US government's reaction has been a giant "fuck you". They have refused to apologise and invoked state secrets privilege to avoid legal liability for their criminal wrongdoing. As for the US people, despite Arar's story being widely reported, they either do not know or do not care that their government had an innocent man tortured. he was after all just a foreigner.

What is scary is Bush can say there is nothing wrong with what they are doing, and it all seems to be so mundane.

Don't worry, people we torture never are innocent. They always confess to something. Indeed, that's why fascist dictatorships torture -- to extract confessions from dissidents to justify show trials and executions. Heck, torture me enough, and I'll confess to being the guy behind the grassy knoll who *really* killed JFK. Well, except for the nasty fact that I was born the year after JFK was assassinated but... oh yeah, I did it while I was a fetus. Yeah!
