You say "it is likely that articles of similar ilk are available in other publications. Maybe entire publications, focused only on those types of articles." I disagree. Have you actually read the magazine lately? Whether or not the majority of the writing is only of interest if you're in New York, the remainder -- the fiction, journalism (like Hersh's prison abuse articles), travel writing, political commentary, history, reviews, and (okay, okay) the humor -- makes it a perfectly legitimate national magazine. I subscribe, and I think the dollar a week is worth it just for the movie reviews.
I know people who dislike the New Yorker's arrogant tone (and graphic design, for that matter), and I can understand that, but I just don't see what makes it inappropriate for Midwestern readers. Yes, it has a strong brand. Yes, some people probably read it more for the prestige than the writing. But if you really think there's a magazine that could replace The New Yorker for quality of general-interest writing, name it.

Anonymous,
Thanks for the comment. I must admit, I've always been a fan of your quotes in Bartlett's. You're a sharp wit, to be sure.
That said, I think my point may have a been a bit off the mark here. I wasn't intending to insult the editorial integrity of the publication or its staff. I agree, it's a great pub. Still, I do think it's likely that many articles of the same ilk can be found in other pubs. (And yes, I read the same issue based on the conversation I had with my seat mate.)
The quoted statement is really neither here nor there. It's just me, searching for something. And that "something" was the topic upon which I was finally able to alight. What I found interesting was how The New Yorker had grown to such a great national pub, while remaining very close to its traditional, founding roots.
I don't think it's inappropriate reading for anyone. I do, however, find extremely interesting the audience it has been able to confer.
Thanks very much for taking the time to comment. It is always greatly appreciated. This is a conversation, afterall. And if you don't comment, it's awfully one-sided.
Thanks, again,
Rick
