Yes! Cheers RT - I couldn't agree more. My favorite part of the last few years is the way old media is trying to desperately keep up with what's happening online. And then when they try to co-opt it, how often it fails miserably or puts the final nail in the coffin on whatever it was.
Some big media companies kind of get it like NBC which asked viewers of "The Office" to generate their own video promo using the official theme song and graphics, but no actual footage from the show -- winning submissions are now being shown on NBC.
NBC provided the sound & graphic files and a place to upload them on YouTube, promoted it through already popular Office fan sites, and voila - user-generated content for their core techno-savvy auidence, keeping interest up over the summer hiatus, and leveraged what fans were already doing (creating their own fan videos of the show). Plus, they are showing original Office "Webisodes" every week during the summer as well to give fans something new to watch. A win-win really for all concerned.
And then there is Microsoft, who just launched their copy of MySpace called MSN "Spaces" which has to be the lamest thing yet from Redmond. Technology innovator, my ass.
Now, I just have to wait for the Oregonian's article on this cool new thing called YouTube for my Mom to know about it and ask me to help her "see it."
