I wondered if I was the only one who noticed this! The very act of NOT using the poster made me think INSTANTLY, "Oh, this movie must REALLY REALLY stink" which I don't think it does but still, left a nasty after taste.
Somebody goofed.

Agreed.
I think I probably SEE this stuff all of the time, but I think I really NOTICED it this time because of where it was. When I'm in a Starbucks, I am always struck by the attention to details or the lack thereof. This was definitely a case of the latter.

So, I have missed your commentary. I actually blogged about marketing (*gasp*). Take a look and point and laugh:

I love that the girl's face is pictured twice in that damn poster; both the same size and practically touching each other.

Just FYI, the names are always placed in order of salary. So Laurence Fishburne made the most money, then Angela Bassett ... you get the idea. That does not mean that the pictures below have to correspond to the same order. So, that was not a mistake, it's just a common rule in the industry. Check out this cover from Ocean's Eleven, it's a perfect example.

However, I do agree that they just should have kept the original movie poster as the dvd cover. But, then they would not have people picking up the box going "look, it's the guy from The Matrix," let's rent that! That is, after all, why they paid Laurence Fishburne so much in the first place.
