I am one of the early adopters, and completely agree with your hypothesis. I am happy to own the phone and also appreciate Apple's marketing ingenuity.
Another note, most Apple products average a 40% profit margin. The actual production cost for the 8 GB iPhone had a 54% profit margin built in. With these figures in mind, the cost to Apple for a $100 apple credit would most likely be covered by any purchase made. As they sell very few products for under $200. I have decided to buy a second iPhone, so they will actually end up with a small margin on that phone.
