See, it was merger and the jobs sacrificed that hit me first besides the fact MSFT's 'Live' efforts (search, mail, et al) have had something (seriously!) wrong with them. The blogs for those teams are depressing and sad because no one is standing behind them so that they can innovate. The things I turn to MSFT for are not the things Yahoo produces...can we just leave well enough alone?

I think the cultural differences is a big thing, worth consideration.
I just don't see Yahoo! 'merging' with the byzantine internal political structures within Microsoft, unless they exist in a semi self-autonomous state, like Bungie and the Mac Business Unit.
The reason for the purchase is glaring obvious: after Googles' purchase of DoubleClick, there's no one else left for Microsoft to buy to bolster their (read: provide Microsoft with some kind of) advertising platform.
