I am so glad that you are alright - thank you for the update, Alex!!

Yes, it sucks not to use one's arm for six weeks. And yes, it could have been much worse.

Either way, I am thinking of you Monk! And sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Nicely done, Alex. A narrow escape indeed, one that as a fellow cyclist I can appreciate. There but for the grace of...whoever. And not for nothing, but I think y'all should keep him doped up on painkillers for the next six weeks. It might make life easier for all of you.

And of course, if anything needs doing that I can do, give a shout.

Ouch.

Not much to do about most clavicle fractures....

The general plan used to be a "figure-8" splint, which pulls the shoulders back, but nowadays a simple sling is as often used.

I'd recommend a follow-up with your regular provider to re-check the alignment and make sure that the treatment is optimal.

"Red flags" necessitating immediate attention would include significant numbness/tingling, radiating pain, swelling, pallor, or coldness in the arm.

Meanwhile, rest, ice, ibuprofen (up to 800mg 3x/day), and painkillers are the standard options.

Good luck,
- Eddie

Oh, shit! Glad that you are both going to be okay.

I am so very, very glad that you are both ok. As you said, it could have been much worse. So, where do we send cookies to help both of you get better faster?

De-lurking for a moment here. Monk & Alex, I am sure glad y'all are ok! Alex, you should take over Monk's blog more often. You have the gift.

Proper gear when riding = good. I slid to a stop on the front of my full-face helmet once. Kept the helmet for a while to show off the damage it took instead of my face.

Glad you're both okay.

My parents both ride (my husband's a pussy) and I always worry that they're not wearing their gear. Thankfully, they do.

Rest up Monk, and really push the whole "jump when I say jump" thing - it'll make you heal faster - I promise!

Wowee. Glad to hear everyone is okay, but man, that sucks about being down for six weeks. Hope it heels quickly. Is there anything supplemental you can take to aid that along? Extra calcium and vitamins, maybe?

Yeeks, what a tumble! But glad to hear the prognosis is good.

Where can we send get-well distractions?

Ouch! I'm glad it wasn't any worse.

Alex: Well-written! You should hijack the blog more often.

Monk: Would it be unsporting of me to ask for a wrestling rematch right about now?

I am very glad to hear you are both ok...I can't help but think there is no way Monk is going to follow doctor's orders for 6 weeks. But I hope he does and I am glad you were both wearing your protective gear.

Cat: Monk is following doctor's orders if it means Tambo and I have to tie him to the couch.

Oh no. I am so glad to hear that you're okay.

I extol the benefits of helmets and leather and boots when riding, and really have to wonder about those who like the feel of the wind in their hair so much that common sense is tossed right into that wind.

Get better quickly. I bet you'll have many willing caregivers begging to come to your assistance.

Just another customer dropping by to say, "Eek!" and also "Best healing wishes!"

Glad to hear you were both using your brains and wearing your gear. Very, very glad that all in all everyone is okay and that Monk will back to up to snuff in six weeks.

Six weeks of rest, however, does suck big time. My sympathies.

Shite! I'm so glad both of you are alive and mobile and non head injured. Damn. I wish we Texas folks were in closer proximity cause we sure would cook for you, read to you, type stuff, and help out in whatever way we could.
Since we are so, so many miles away, we'll just email you silly things and dirty pictures.

Nobody is asking the really important question...

IS THE BIKE OKAY?

But seriously, glad it's only a broken clavicle and not more serious.

If I were home in Seattle now, I'd be down there trying to figure out how to make rope. Or doing something else to help. Get better soon! xx

MM - pictures?

Monk, sorry to hear about the accident.Follow doctor's orders and get well soon!
Debbie

Glad to hear you're both okay and mostly fully functioning.

Monk, maybe this is the universe giving you some of that time you wanted for creativity and friends.

Heal well!

BTW, Monk is your wish list up to date? Or do you want cookies this time?

Ach, Jesus Christ, Fuck AND Shit. Glad you're both alive and kicking, but FUCK six weeks without the use of an arm is going to drive Monk up the walls.

Best luck for getting through the next month, Monk.

Sending my best wishes to you both.

I figure with three Scorpios to hold you accountable to the doctor's orders, you'll probably survive.

But seriously, really glad to hear you're going to be okay. And as much as it bites, veggiegodess may have a point: sometimes the things we wish for don't always come in the way we expect them to. Maybe this is one of those times ...

Thank god for boots, leather gear, and full-faced helmets -- and having the sense to wear them! Glad to hear you guys are alive and not permanently injured. Six weeks is going to feel like an awful long time though... (Broke my leg in 3 places when I had my motorbike accident. Six weeks in a cast was no fun.)

Thinking of you Monk. It's good you've got a big loving family that will take incredible care of you. And fortunate that there is a lot of rope around to keep you tied to the sofa.

Thanks for reporting in, Alex. DeLano & I send you both much heart. Not much more I can say than that. Heal soon, and we're glad you're both walking to tell the tale.

Best wishes to Monk, Alex, and family.

Please post what we can do to help! Books? Cookies? Porn mags?

What can we do, and were do we send them?

I am so glad you are both OK and great job Alex! So Monk, I broke both my elbows just days after my birthday a couple of years ago. Something told me the universe was telling me to slow down! Hope you find a way to enjoy the time and find your inner ability to lead without doing! I am sure Matisse and Tambo will make sure you rest and all of us are sending you healing energy so you should be good as new in a couple of months. Time flies - no really it does!!

Eegads! Thank you for posting about this. I can't imagine idling his ropedness for 6 weeks. Yegods.

We're up in Boston for the flea this coming weekend, and we were looking forward to seeing ya'll, but if that doesn't happen, totally understandable, and we'll catch up with you another time.

Let us know if there's -anything- we can do to help. Not much I can do from Boston, but the offer is open!

As a fellow motorcyclist, I am glad to hear your injuries weren't life threatning.

Take care both of you and get well soon.

Alex...you write very well, quite entertaining!

Tony

Jessus, Homer, and Jethro Christ. thanks, Alex, for so luridly giving us the details. sooo glad you are both mostly normal afterward. My heart goes out especially to Tambo and Matisse, I have gotten my share of those phone calls, *shudder*. and Monk? I agree that you have a good chance to make more of your personal magic and turn this into a blessing. I offer my humble cheering skills for baked goods, knitted goods, whatever .

oh ouch. glad to know everyone is OK-ish

A word to the wise - one of my friends broke his collarbone a few months ago (hit by a car) and foolishly disregarded doctor's orders. He's looking at his third surgery 'cause his body keeps rejecting the plates and screws, and will probably never be pain free again.

DO NOT use that arm. Don't even TRY to use it!!!!

Nobody is pointing out the ominous conclusion here...

Boris is the new Christine.

We're so sorry to hear about your accident and so glad to hear that you and Monk made it out fairly okay.

Monk: There aren't words, except that we're so glad you made it out fairly well. Ride that pink elephant as long as it holds out and feel better. We can't wait to see you back in action!

Hugs,
Kerry & Vanessa

Ouch! I broke my collarbone as a child, and I remember that kind of pain. So much love to all of Monks fantastic support network, and to Monk.

If someone would drop me a line I can send a care package, I would really love to send some Pocky and other cheering type goods on the way

Ouch. Busted collarbones really suck.
I am glad that was all that happened. You're right Alex, it could have been a lot worse.
I am most definitely glad you're ok and that Monk will heal. Good luck keeping him confined.

Well we all know that you-Monk are in good hands with Tambo,Matisse, Alex & Nerdy all around to make sure you do what you are told. Good Luck you all..so glad you two were wearing your motorcycle gear. Well Matisse if you have to tie him to the couch-please do post pics...

best of luck with the healing Monk. Alex, glad you're okay. I just bought my first bike this weekend, a Ducati, and I also have ninja like reflexes and can crash pretty much anything after a dozen years of extreme sports. I hope I never have to use those skills. But props on the safety gear and the advocacy of such. Glad you both made it out of there!

Wow, Alex. We DO care about your wellbeing, too!!!

I'm glad you're both okay, please take care of yourself and your Daddy, and don't let Him overdo it!

Monk, don't fret too much over this unwanted vacation.

Wish I could be closer to help more - but those of you closest to Monk can handle him just fine. You're some of the toughest people around.

Just sending more well wishes from up in Canada. I'd offer assistance but short of sending cookies and porn, I'm unable to much past that. Somehow I think that's plenty however

Definately glad you're okay too Alex (All of us, whether said or not do care a heck of a lot about your wellbeing too.)

Holy shit, y'all. I was out of town and just saw this. I am so glad you two are okay, but man, I feel for you, Monk. Rest up and get better.

A very gentle hug and some lemon bars for you.

Alex I would have to place your ranking of "coolest person in Seattle" up to about third or fourth

Alex, thanks for letting everyone know what happened. Y'all were so lucky and SMART for gearing up! I think most everyone knows someone or of someone who was not as lucky. Y'all take care! I'll eat some cookies in your name.

Very glad to hear that you both are as ok as you are, given the circumstances (Alex--very descriptive; hats off to your writing style!). Cheers to gear--as everyone has said, it could have been a lot worse. But on the up side for Monk, Matisse and Tambo will have no need of reason to keep him continully tied to the sofa.

Warm hugs and healing ju-ju to you both. When we're back in town, please let us know if we can do a cookie / grocery run for ya.
