I do not believe that the franchise system was ever legally endorsed by the rebbe . There certainly were no franchises in the 1950's even if there was little competition amongst shluchim.
Only as the rebbe got older did this concept of roshe medinah etc take hold. Obviously big shot shluchim like Cunin (CA) Herson (NJ) and others liked this idea. Krinsky and Shemtov liked it as it enabled them to run an organization with some form of control rather than a system of chaos.
Again I am not an expert about the legal organization of Chabad today, but I wonder whats to stop a shliach from opening up a house called Chabad - "Reorganized latter day Zaddikim" for example. And in CA a few have indeed done this.
I am suprised that no one is reporting Yudel Krinsky;s attempt at evicting the Cong. 770 where the Rebbe davened from the building of 770 which his group Aguch owns. He is fighting the duly elected gabboim and leadership of this kahal of Lubavitcher chasidim. He is doing this in secular court and against the will of all official rabbonim in Crown Heights. Is it not worth a press release, perhaps by Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin ?
Finally I as an outsider to the present day misgereth of Chabad ,really am not interested in Chabad houses , how they are run in making shofars in Pr campaigns in cheap sensationalistic propoganda etc. So in my opinion they can police themselves like Macdonald's does.
What bugs me (a s a member of the Chasedei hanusach and chaside haGeza)is the successful attempt at stifling any discussion of the future of Lubavitch from a spiritual point of view. No discussion of the possibility of ever appointing a new rebbe or spritual leaders (not dayanim , but spiritual leaders) etc.
Groups like Belz, Stolin, Boyan etc all faced similiar problems and eventually appointed new leadership.
Its hard to beleive that no one except for Shimen Deutsch and Rabbi Hasofer in Beersheva have ever thought of this possibility.

Gravatar Meanwhile, back in 770, a plea for help goes out to stop the hoodlums from (further) disturbing the environment.

Gravatar In respone to the recent events in 770. it's clear to all that the Rebbe's death did not affect Lubavitch one iota. The movement continues to function in it's normal manner and all is well.Never missed a beat (of course one may be tempted toa sk if thats true why did this people need a rebbe at all ?)
Additionally there is no need for spiritual leadership in Lubavitch, Rabbis Krinsky , Shmotkin and Shemtov posess the moral and spiritual authrity to govern the movement. And their children will become the new Schneerson ruling dynasty.
LNS like the Tass News Service will continue to demonstrate that all is well in the world of Lubavitch. And their fellow travellers in Modern Orthodoxy will buy these lokshen. How about my new press release : Events in Satmar demonstrate Brotherly Love. Can the MO world buy that too ?

Gravatar Schneur,

COL is the best antidote I have seen for LNS so far. They have been all over the recent 770 war (the plaque story, e.g.) while the other "official" news sites avoid it like it was MealMart :-).

Gravatar Moshe Herson has caused the same damage in New Jersey. Indeed, the passing of the Rebbe (z"tl) was the best thing that could have happened to Herson, who has become a megalo-real-estate-maniac. He has his hands in everyone's pot and is practically in the protection racket.
