The key to this story is that the non-Glatt product in Postville is supevised by a Chasidic rabbi of the Chabad stripe Rabbi Zeilengold. Thus everyone believes that it has some higher standard of kashruth than if it was supervised by lets say the tablet K or the Ralbag family.
The onus rests on Rubashkin and Zeilengold. This is a classic case of genaivas daas. Who knows how much of the so called Glatt product sold in the east coast is really Kosher under rabbi Zeilengold's Chassidishe hashgocha but hardly Glatt. Does this not beg for a tikkunn gadol ?
If I saw and I did Zeilengolds name on meat , I too would assume its high quality kashruth not the hashgocha of last resort it really is.

Gravatar Why is non-glatt meat "kosher" (i.e. in quotes) ... it is no less kosher than glatt meat; for example, glatt and non-glatt dishes can be interchanged without rekashering.

Gravatar You are correct. It is only the Orthodox community in America who have fufilled all the Mitzvoth beyn Adam leChaveiro who have so defined Glatt as being kosher and the other meat as ....
