Rothko progessed from surrealism to Abstract Expressionism, like others of his generation -- although Rothko's mystical masses of color were a unique and personal motif.
These paintings invite the viewer to sit in front of them and be misbonen for for awhile to experience the "Rothko effect."
However, where Monet's waterlilies are also encompassing ecstatic mystical meditations, Rothko's color masses take you to very different "places."
I think some of them may be viewed at the Modern. But call first!
