A good example of someone smart defending bad ideas is of the Late Lubavitcher Rebbe Zt'l, a brilliant man, who defended the authenticity of the letters from the Cherson Geniza, even though the forgeries are apparent to any amature. Another example is the Rebbe's promotion of the messinaism of his father-in-law and later that of his own. Truly a great paradox!

I don't really have any interest in Yehuda's comment, but I recently heard that R' Sholom-Ber (Berel) Levin once came across a letter of the Previous Rebbe in the archives, where the PR writes to a professor that he has some doubts about the authenticity of the Cherson geneiza documents.
When Berel Levin showed it to the Rebbe, the Rebbe told him that it would not be worthwhile to reopen the case now, and that it's better left alone.
