Gravatar On teh other hand, here are 10 benefits of changing your identity (in no specific order):
;-)
10. You always get a second chance to make a first impression.
9. People take your words objectively, rather than trying to place them into the context of how they feel about YOU.
8. Less repercussions to concern yourself with.
7. Freedom.
6. Mystery.
5. Because what I thought yesterday, may not apply today.
4. Hischadshus.
3. You remain a moving target.
2. Guilt-free posting.

Gravatar Changing handles (note this is different from identities, didn't you read the post???). It is also not a name. So you will have to delete some of your points. But really you have to read this to understand.
http://www.mentalblog.com/2005/0...s-and- tags.html
In a nutshell. Changing handles is like putting the same book from one shelf to another. But we are building relationship links here. So tagging carries emotional value. We agree to recognize consistent handles or I demand it in a dictatorial way. In any case if you want to relate stick to your handle.

Gravatar I could not agree more heartily with Chavakuk Elisha, who no doubt understands me much better than Tzemach because we were both born in Norwich gubernia, and share the same geographic genes (as well as the rest of our genes).

It is a racial characteristic of Norwicher chassidim to desire independence and resent Russian commissar tactics (even though 99% of the Norwich kehillah came from Shat, a few verst south of Ponevez, which is sort of Russian Jewish culturally, although not White Russian, to our eternal shame).

Anyway, we LIKE to keep changing names. It is liberating (at least in imagination), more creative, and a time-honored Norwicher-Shatter survival strategy.

My only question is why Chavakuk Elisha has not changed names. Must be due to peer pressure...

Gravatar cut the bs, i tried to explain to you nicely... do you own blog and change your handel to your hearts content.

Gravatar Tzemach,
Don't be so sensitive!
Sheesh, you seem to be losing your sense of humor. My comment above was made in the spirit of light-heartedness, and should be taken as such.
As to handles vs. identities/names, it seems that even the original post interchanges the terms between the reisha & the seifa.
I have maintained, and continue to maintain, one handle/identity/name as you ordered - but I think that the Clay Shirky example, although interesting & significant, does not apply to all cases/comments, and does not minimize some of the benefits I mentioned above.
How often have I ignored the words of an individual poster who I do not respect. Perhaps I would have considered their statement more carefully had they used another name (and the converse is also true).
Again, I have NO problem sticking to the handle I have, I was just attempting to point out the other side of the argument.

Gravatar I would defend myself on this critically important issue, but am unable to find the words since I took two Verbal Imodiums per Tzemach's diagnosis...

Gravatar drop the K kafka please, last worning.
