Can you fill me in on the meaning of the writing within the light?
Also, was the purpose of this post Faust, Rembrandt, Art, or affinity for the counter-culture?

Pontius Pilate had it put on top of the cross Jesus was crucified on to mock him.

At first glance this is a Catholic amulet, but it is kind of a warning. It warns of a light (amulet is coming in from a light) that may be unsustainable to some. Where does this light come from?

In the second ring it says something like: "Adam, we are like your mirror". It is suggesting Faustus, like Adam, could not maintain the light.

The "INRI" is an "elemental" formula believed to be used by these "alchemists".

Saw this etching (plate and print) last week at the Bijbel Museum in Amsterdam. I don't think it is a Rembrandt. I like it, really interesting. But it does not ring true. A student maybe. Themes don't match Rembrandt. It seems like a wish fulfillment etching - I wish Rembrandt had etched this. It's been pegged a fake before hasn't it?
