it is hard for me to comprehend. it seems form the post that the ostracized families are plenty. so why not send their children elsewhere, open their own school or move? i am definitely missing something. what is it? is it some kind of loyalty to chabad?

faruq, who said anything about chabad?

This probelm is certainly not restricted to Chabad. We just take it to new heights ;)

Gravatar I don't know if we can read between the lines, but did he say that Ger don't go to the schools by other Chasidim? I will ask the Frummer? And yes he insist that his proper name is with the ? mark.

Gravatar berl, chabad=the party

Gravatar Anyone see a connection between this post and today's Daf Yomi?

Gravatar ok, tell us Boruch.

Gravatar daf who?

Gravatar Corrupt "judges", Rashi mentions nepotism by talmidei chachomim. Shabbos 139a.

Gravatar we need a research into nepotism according to the law. i am sure it is not as bad as the cases cited, but it is far from the ideal meritocracy TA desires.

Gravatar boruch, עיינתי שם ולא מצאתי

Gravatar boruch, שוב עיינתי ומצאתי

Gravatar the concept of a son inheriting his father's position even if there are others BETTER qualified for it is definitely present in the jewish law. as long as the son is a ממלא מקום (possesses minimum absolute required skills and character for the job) he is preferable to everybody else, even to those who would most likely succeed based on merit.

right?

Gravatar remember the toing and froing with aguch in e'y iirc, R yurkowitz wrote a letter indicating taht according to the Alter Rebbe son takes precedence

Gravatar Son, brother, son-in-law, best friend, etc, all during the fathers lifetime?

Gravatar Faruq:

Your question was answered in the post in my address to the protagonist.

"The girls you are refusing into your school have nowhere else to go."

"After all, are we not all expected by G-d to dress simply and be as un-materialistic as possible? Which Rav would defend them? How could one?"

To open a new school needs loads of dosh, and more importantly, the support of a prominent Rabbi. They would not get that.

Tzemach:

The Gerer chassidim send their children to any of the local schools.

Gravatar faruq, you are not the first to point it out here

Gravatar whats frummer?'s main issue here, nepotism or no place for these kids to go?
the situation might have been the same without the nepotism as well.
the real problem IMHO is (and schneur discussed this) that there is no balance of powers and all the powers are concetrated on one individual entity.
nepotism, abuse of power etc. are all a symptom and a natural result of this.
it might very well be a wonderful idea for a son to replace the father, however there must always be a balance of power.

Gravatar Specifically, see Marvin's Thursday September 8th blog

Gravatar If I'm not mistaken, the Mosad in London discussed here is not a Chabad one, but the YHT schools.
Am I correct??

Gravatar The subject of nepotism deserves very careful investigation in the light of Halacha. It might help draw demarcation lines between what's clearly wrong and what's merely desirable but hardly enforcable and rarely achievable.

Gravatar During our shiur about crooked judges, our maggid shiur said that we can understand the brocha in SE "Hoshiva ..." where it continues "vehoser meemenu yogan vanochah" that the connection is that when Moshiach comes, we will no longer have pain because of crooked judges.
