Gravatar This video tells more than any historical document why Hungarian Rabbis developed a pathological hate of the Zionists.
Because of the revolution the Zionists in Russia did not have chance to grow into this obviously strong educational block.

Tzemach, I'm not sure I understand your comment. Please explain.

Gravatar I jsut came across this blog for the first time -- is it possible to know a bit about tzemach atlas or is that not pc?

Gravatar i find it very ironic that the 'secular jews' dancing at the end of the clip, are singing 'chassidishe neginim' with' an 'ingarishe' accent!
Tzemach, thanks for finding this clip. Though not from those parts, it was a rare glimpse into a world that was. I have a similar video clip filmed by a distant reltive on his trip to Russia in 1933. He filmed the Red Square and as well as our mishpacha that came to odessa from lipovetz to see him. I have it on DVD. Let me me you if you are interested.

Gravatar The video of the Minchas Elazar speaking about Shabbos is on Menachem Daum's documentry about Chasidim: A People Apart. It is interesting to note that the Rebbe quotes the Minchas Elazar extensively (especially in regards to minhagim). Many Chassidim realized how true of a person the M"E was when they saw this phenominal clip. It was filmed by a television ("Movie") crew and he wass told that Yidden in America would see it. He could have given brachos and made a pleasant fund raising appeal. In stead immediately he says: "Yidden in America heet Shabbess etc."

Gravatar I was literally moved to tears by watching these sweet yiddishe kinderlach (the secular and the religious as well) and knowing that hardly any of them would be alive a decade later...

Gravatar Oy Lonu!
BTW I first heard this nigun in the Eliezer Schick shule. They used to sing this after Sfiras Haomer.

Gravatar People are complex. The Minchas Elozor was a great Chasidic leader , Halachic authority and from the clip which is also in the Holocaust Museum in NY and many other venues a harzike Yid. He also led a well known Yeshiva in Munkatch.Like the Satmarer rebbe he had a cutting sense of humor and did not suffer fools easily.
That does not change the fact that he was a fanatical anti-Zionist . He also foughtthe Aguda, fought the mesifta in warsaw. Fought daf Yomi and anything new in FRUm life.
His chasid Rav Issocher Teichtal in Em Habanim Semacha admits that his rebbe was wrong. And more he writes what could and should have been .... I am sure that todays Munkatz has a Beh Jacob school learns the Daf and even teaches SOME English in its chedorim etc.
The Rayaatz was close to the Munkatcher because of their "common" anti Zionism. The Rayatz lived long enough to change his views , the MInchas Elozor was spared the Holocaust "Hun halach LeMenuchos" and died never changing his mind.
He also fought other rebbes like the Belzer who he thought were cutting in on his turf (home turf in his case).
He was the expert in Minhogim and halacha lemaase as people practiced it in Europe , as such the REBBE quoted him many times. Certainly his hashkofa was far far from the hashkofe of the 7th Nasi of Chabad.

Gravatar Thanks for the post. That was a truly facinating video.
Does anyone know if the Minchas Elozor is the same Rebbe that Shlomo Carlebach tells in the story entitled 'The Munkatcher Passport'?

Gravatar Beautiful and heartbreaking. I hope you don't mind if I link to the video on my blog too.

Gravatar By the way I saw your friend the guy who pisses in cornflakes on Kingston ave. tonight.

I guess being Mikayim Kibud AIM

Gravatar Neal,
I have three comments to you.
1. He is in CH for the yehrzeit of his father (chof beis I think).
2. Do not tell him who you are, he wants to give you "fresk in ponim".
3. Go away from this blog.

Gravatar Anyway The video is amazing god work

Neal

Gravatar If I'm not mistaken i believe he was a mohel too. He also visited Eretz Yisrael!

Gravatar The Tikva is sung with different words, i wasnt able to make out all of them, anyone knows what they are and why it is different then what they sing today. One important difference is "Lashuv El Eretz Avotenu" as opposed to "Lihyot Am Chofshi Beartzenu"...

Gravatar Zuravitzer, interesting :+:

Gravatar On the subject of hatikva, I think these may have been the original words ;) :
http://www.cramim.rishon.k12.il/...shon/ romani.mp3

Gravatar What language is that?

Gravatar It's an old Rumanian wagon drivers song, AFAIK.

Gravatar the URL ends off romani.mp3, that might be a clue as to the language. i believe romani is a language of the gypsy people.

Gravatar Google says the tune of Hatikva is based on a "Moldavian-Rumanian folksong called "Carul cu Boi" (Cart and Oxen). "

Gravatar there is a story here:

Gravatar Sadly the Munkatcher died only 3 years after his daughters wedding.

This son in law ( Rabinowitz ) went with his future father in law to Israel to visit the Sabah Alepandria and while his future father in the The Munkatcher was there he visited Harav Kook Zal. Which had he found out about it he would have let the Shiduch go further.

Also the Daughter died very young and The hubby remarried and his life was never the same.

From what I heard tonight he was an exceptional Iloi and Gaon but went off the Derech later in life. At first he took over his Shvers Place and Rov and Rosh Misivtah in Munkatch after the ME passing then strayed from the Derech in Israel and later he was known and called a Nasty name which is not nice to repeat.

A Sad story I believe the Current Rebbe was born in 1940.

Gravatar Shneur, the 'aim habonim smeicho' Rabbi Teichtel, had the courage to realize his Rebbe was wrong.I wonder how many Lubavitchers have the courage to realize that the Rebbe made a grave mistake by stirring the messianic pot, look at the mess it left Chabad in with all the 'meshichiast' zombies.I believe that R'Teichtels' son became Chabad, I wonder if he has the guts.....

Gravatar Schneur, why do you accuse the Rayatz of having changed his views on Zionism.Do you have any proof?
All the FR and the Rebbe did,was to acknowledge reality and playing along the lines of realpolitik.

Gravatar TA,the other niggun besides "ve'al yedei seh yushpah shefah rav..." is now a popular children's song in Israel "chag purim, chag purim, chag yafeh layeladim etc."
BTW the early chalutzim desecrated many chassidic niggunim.I heard from the Skverer Rebbe, that "Hava nagilah" is an authentic Tchernobler niggun.Sing along!

Gravatar Does anyone know the ratio of frum : frei in 1933 Munkatch? How ironic that the Munkatcher Rebbe z"l was encouraging American Jews to keep Shabbos with the assurance of "sit git zein / it will be good" while seemingly unaware of the train that was barelling down on European Jewry, frum and frei alike.

Gravatar skverer niggun?

Gravatar Hava nagila is still sung today by older Russian lubavitcher Chassidim (R. Meir Itkin) a bit differently. It could be Chernobyl who had close ties with Lubavitch.
Another note: They say ve'al Yedei zeh Yushpah Shefa Rav BISHVIL ha'olamot (!) - a common nussach is BECHOL ha'olamos. (I haven't had a chance to check up sheenuyai nuscha'os, nevertheless quite amazing and interesting to say the least.
Oh, one more thing: the girls in the circle are dressed so tzneeusdik...;)

Gravatar what do they sing before ve'al Yedei zeh? I can't make it out.

Gravatar is there any way to download this clip to your pc?

Gravatar rav teichtal's einiklach are toldos avraham yitzchak chassidim and very anti-zionist. they realized that their zeidy was right most of his life (when he was anti-zionist) and went crazy from the tirchos of the milchamah.

Gravatar its sad but all the zionists in the film survived the war by fleeing who was right think

Gravatar so true. thogh the rebbe was a big zaddik he was obsessed with his zionist jealosy, he could not accept competion he even payed the spiker rebbe 100,ooo franks to leave munkath.what do we learn? rebbes shall study torah and political ledears shall make life or death decisions regarding life or death survival issues with repect for the holy munkatcher rebbe mayer
