I have not bought a Russian book in a long time. Anyone can tell me where I can get Shafarevich's book? There is a used English translation on Amazon $62. I will look in a library next week.
Interesting is that he is a mathematician, not historian. He was also a famous dissident in CCCP times.

Hey why do you have a picture of a Russian poster that says "Knowlege will break the chains of slavery?"
Otherwise an interesting read...

You've already prompted me to buy Matisyahu's CD, and 2 CDs by Mariza.l

I have cooled off to Matisyahu and Mariza is very predictable. The song I published is one of her best. Sorry if you were disappointed.

More importantly I ordered two books from your list yesterday and will get others when I finish these:
Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America
The Federalist Papers

You did publish Mariza's best, most heart-rending song. But I am still quite appreciative of both CDs and do not regret buying them. I don't listen to Matisyahu often, but I enjoy his music, too.
I hope that you will enjoy Albion's Seed as much as I did. With all the talk of "Red States" and "Blue States" during the election, I found Fisher's account convincing and illuminating.
The Federalist papers are an incomparable masterpiece of public argumentation. It is humbling to realize that these essays were written to convince the voters, and that they represented the level of political discussion in a nascent republic.

I definitely will get the original Shafarevith book, will call my cousin in Moscow, he will be happy to get it for me. I also would like to read the Living the Enlightenment although I have bought some books about Masons with great interest in the past only to find them tedious.

TA; Leaving Hobbes off your list is not wise. And don't depend on selections from modern writers. Most modern collators dissort Locke to suite their own agendas. Need examples? consider Locke's own words on Moslems or atheists. Karl Popper's Open Society is very useful for a dissection of what when wrong with German political thought starting with Hegelian metaphysics.
As much as Free Masonry seems to be a positive development in human history, I think you overstate their influence. Reading Napoleon's letters should set you straight about his priorities.
I would love to hear the French side of the Russian invasion that I know only from Lubavitch and Tolstoy. --

PmH, this is not my list, it is a list by Gandalin. Are there specific books that you recommend?

Tzemach,
Shafarevich will not disappoint you.
"Living the Enlightenment" is a decidedly academic book, and unless you are deeply interested in the subject, might very well prove a tedious read.
Thomas Hobbes is indeed a delightful writer, but you have already got quite a reading assignment in front of you.

Hello again TA;
IMHO the following are neglected classics:
- "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes is the observation of an English renaissance man watching a civil war to explain anarchism will always fail. More useful than Machiavelli.
- "The Open Society and Its Enemies" by Karl Popper is superb is its treatment of Plato, Hegel and Marx. Better reading than Strauss.
- "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (and his connection with Reb Yehuda HaNasi) is fascinating.

Tzemach,
Yes I found a cookie from Haloscan and deleted it, but to no avail.
The question is, who was Gandalin . . . an inconsequential literary figure I am afraid. It could be a long story . . .

Gandalin, I received this answer from Jeevan, Haloscan owner and programmer:
Typing a new URL over the existing one is the easiest way to change the cookie.
The only way Haloscan 'remembers' the name/email/URL fields is via the cookies though so if the cookies really were deleted in the browser, there is no way Haloscan could remember it.

Tzemach,
By the way, to get back to the subject of Napoleon Bonaparte, a French historian has just published a book on what he call's "Napoleon's Crime" -- the suppression of a slave revolt in Haiti, in which all African slaves over the age of 12 were killed, many by gassing them in the holds of ships. The historian, Claude Ribbe, suggests that this killing of some 100,000 souls represents the model for the genocide practiced by the National Socialists.

For Enlightenment, English, background of:
Shakespeare
"If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream"
