You should see Daniel Zamir! He plays occasional backup for Matisyahu on alto sax. He's another hadar hatorah guy who is also a serious Jazz musician. Having worked with John Zorn and Andy Statman, Matisyahu is probably small time for him, but check this out (click on the demo)- he's pretty radical.

Let's see... I was classically trained on the piano as a kid, but I dropped it as a teen (hated the hours of practice). That gives me a drop of formal musical background, I guess. Matisyahu I knew personally way back when, Andy Statman I have met (but I wouldn't say know) and seen many times at the Charles St Shul improv sessions, John Zorn I know because I wrote a piece on his new Jewishness, Daniel Zamir I only know through Mattisyahu... I'm not really an expert, just a fan.

cute - real guitarists plug their guitars directly into their souls - they don't need the "malbushim"

p.s. I'm not an insider or a professional so please don't treat my 'review' as anything more than the opinion of one individual. (some music blogs that link to here are taking my disappointment with Youth far too seriuosly). Come on people, can't you come to your own conclusions? Especially for those of you who have seen Matisyahu perform live -- it's obvious that Youth doesn't come close. But it also doesn't spell the end of his career. [also, consider the fact that the completed version won't be out until March-that leaves 3 months to go back into the studio and rerecord and improve. I'm looking forward to a much better finished product]
