Well done TA; This unusual article is a very good explanation of why the cheresh is potur from mitzvos. I recently heard another explanation from Oliver Sacks (quoted in the Straight Dope article) that provided insight into why shichta of an inverted animal was tzaar baal chayim whereas conventional shichta was not tzaar baal chayim.

pmh, please explain your reference to the inverted shechita. Note though that some people consider Shechita ho Munehches "conventional".

TA; By "inversion" I was referring to the shichta factory method of turning the animal upside down and shechting in a downward direction. By "conventional" I was referring the animal standing and shechted with a upwards motion. Perhaps this would be more accurately called "historical" as economic pressure has made it uncommon. The role of Oliver Sacks in the inference of tzaar in the first case and its lack in the second is not clear to me. I hope your readers can assist.
