In the latest issue of THE ONION, there is a full length interview with the former Mathew Miller - Matisyahu . Among the things he says is that Orthodox Jewish pop music does not appeal to him, that it is not very popular and that its practioneers have very little talent.
Well I am no fan of this music either, but one must concede that men like MBD, Avremel Fried, Lipa Schmeltzer and dozens of others hardly lack talent, perhaps they are not crossover worthy, but they are not just choir boys either. In addition they apparently sell their music and do well at concerts. Again I think Matistahus lack of "time" in the frum world shows here.
Its a very nice interview with a nice photograph of Matisyahu.
The ONION is available free in many stores etc. in College neighborhoods.

Schneur,
While not having read the Onion piece, I would agree with him to an extent. The above mentioned, while having good voices, are not very creative musicians. The fact that the their music sells is more a testemant to the mob mentalty of the Frum consumer ( veani hakoton besoichom). For G-D's sake, if you can sell a pre-packaged bedikas chometz crumb set for $2!!!
( more than a whole loaf of bread!)you can sell music to the frum velt. With few exceptions, most of the tunes and lyrics for the above as well as the other shloimes, shmulies, mechies and heshies is banged out by the sames cadre of people. By the way, i listened to all of the above, have many of the CD and tapes and find myself with something akin to a physical allergic reaction when listeneing to this 'music'. I don't care much for Mattis either but at the very least he and his music has a higher purpose for being other than singing at Bar-Mtzvahs.

From Wikkipedia
"His full secular name is Matthew Paul Miller, and the legal Hebrew name he received at his bris at eight days of age was forgotten. In Hebrew school it was assumed to be Matisyahu because of the reason given above. The original certificate from the bris was located and he discovered that his actual name was Feivish Hershel, but the advice he received was to continue using the Hebrew name he had grown up with."
Feivish Hershel, eh? ...doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Schneur,
If anything, this shows a maturity that is not often seen in BT. From your perspective it is almost assumed that he has to come around to 'appreciating' modern day Jewish performers as 'highly talented', his children from the moment they open their eyes are hooked on 'now it's time to say shalom uncle moishy is going home'.
The fact that UM doesn't have an original song to his name, unlike Dudu Fisher, and is the musical equivilant of empty calories, matters little to 'mommies and totties'. Cut the guy some lsack.

I do not wish to dwell on the ONION interview. But 2 quick points unlike M.'s statement ,this stuff is popular in the frum world and while I am hardly a music critic there are a number of singers and bands I have heard that are original and talented.
Apparently some music critics don't think much of M either.
As for me I think M's music is interesting and I enjoy some of his stuff, but I also can find enjoyment in selected stuff by hemishe musicians and would not blow thenm away like M does with a general criticism.
You are putting words in mouth by saying that M has to appreciate heimishe music , all I was saying is that with a single broad stroke M just blew away heimishe music , hardly the gentlemenly thing to do.
Just as there is good rap and bad rap there are good heimishe stuff and bad stuff. Its not all bad.

Paul: I was not born yesterday and was not educated in Oheli Tore. I know the ONION is a parody, but parts of it are real and documentary. The music section and the interview with M. is real. As a matter of fact the person who gave me the paper was educated at Yale and Princeton and can tell the difference.
But can you tell me whether Bais Mashiach is real ?
