I saw a story in the Kfar Chabad magazine about Rabbi Goldshmidt who was from Yekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk)the Rebbes home town. His father was the shochet in town.Anyway he grew up there and knew the Rebbe and his brother well. The story related there from R' Goldshmidt is he was sitting with Leibel, the Rebbes brother in Leningrad who was attending university there at the time:Goldshmidt and Leibel sat down to farbreng, got shikker as is/was common. To have fun, they searched and found a misnaged, asked him to say a dvar torah and Leibel who was a brilliant young man tore the misnageds pshetl to bits.
Wonderful story.Pity that 'pravda' magazine does not tell us the end of the story, there in Liverpool and in Tel Aviv, details which can be read in Saul Shimon Deutschs' book about the Rebbe

I have seen websites dedicated to the Rebbe’s brother, some of which claim to have the approval of the Lubavitch movement.
Can we get some links for this allegation?

"On the 13th of Iyar (May 15) this year we observe the 51st yartzeit of Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib Schneerson, the youngest brother of the Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach. RabbiYisroel Aryeh Leib was the chosid whose life and work inspired Moshiach and science research and the establishment of the RYAL Research Institute on Moshiach and the sciences. In honor of his yartzeit we present a series of articles discussing his life and work, emphasizing those aspects which continue to inspire and influence Jewish scientists to this very day."

A short preface, I believe we should let the rebbe's brothers rest in peace. Leibel is not responsible for the sainthood bestowed upon him. He was a typical young Russian Jew to whom religion had ceased to mean much. He was a Communist in his college days. He tried business in Tel Aviv and then turned to science and academia.
The rebbe loved his brother, as such he sought to meorialize him, he obviously froze his identity in his mind to their teen years in Russia when they were both religious and dutiful children of of Reb Levik. I find little wrong so far.
Chassidim trying to emulate their rebbe sought to bestow sainthood on those about the rebbe (Mrs. Mushka and Leibel) again a natural act.
I think we have established the facts about Leibel and that is important. But lets cut the rebbe and his cultic followers some slack.
A further question I have asked many times, why no attempt to memorialize others more important in Lubavitch like Mrs. Nechama Dina and Rabbi Shmaryahu Gourary. As I write I am unaware of even 1 tiny mossad named for the Rashag. Is that what he deserved for sitting through 50 years of farbrengungs ? Also Reb Mendel Hornstein died al Kiddush Hashem, why no memorial for him and his wife ?? By the way its not too late to do these things.
Finally I debated if I should reply to the about comments about Rabbi Deutsch.
Let each reader judge his books for himself or herself.. No one forces anyone to like his books. As a friend I lack objectivity in reviewing his books.
Deutsch runs an oganization for the needy delivering packages weekly to needy in Boro Park, Flatbush and kan zivah Hashem es haberocha - yes Crown Heights ! Dozens of families in CH depend on his Sabbath parcels . He delivers over 2,000 parcels every week. Thurs nite his home is full of Jews from all stripes men and women packing and delivering. I met Baale teshuva, Hassidics, Yeshiva people and Modern Orthodox people.Every one pitches in , including many retail, wholesale and ready made food estableshments.
Years ago I met Deutsch in Lower Manhattan, we had lunch and then he himself shlepped food from kosher eateries there in large bags to his office to shlep back to Brookly to distribute. No shluchim, no mazkirus , no Mashbaks, just his own powerful pleitzes.
If that is what apes do , you know let me spend time with Apes as the Gerer rebbe called his chassidm Chayes yes chayes hakodesh !!!!
R. Deutsch has also created a wonderful Biblical museum which has elucidated Biblical issues for thousands of children , Bnai Tore etc. His supporters include important charedi rabbis and roshim.Again hardly the work of "apes".
I doubt the critic above is aware of the multi dimensional nature of Shimen Deutsch's work and hopefully his outlook will change.

Tahara was performed by Rabbi Dubov from Manchester with Rabbis Avraham Shemtov, Sholom B. Gurkov and lehbchl"ch Shmuel Dovid Gurkov who were Temimim as the Rebbe requested, and they were about 14 or 15 at the time.
The Rebbe supported the widow and orphan all the years financially, and otherwise!

Schneur.
Surprisingly lately, only the utmost respect is shown, in order to memorialize, Rabbi Shmaryahu Gourary
A few examples: in 770 for the last few years, on the Rashag’s Yurtziat, Itche Jumper (Springer), has been giving a hasped speech to the Bochurim, about the greatness of the Rashag and his devotion to Lubavitch.
Every year on the Rashag’s Yurtzait, Hanhola’s Hayeshivah makes a Farbriangen upstairs 770. It’s the only farbi besides tes vov kislov that every member of Hanhola attends.
A new book is being published about the entire story of Hei Teves. You are going to be very impressed with the respect shown for the Rashag.

Banshak = bnan shel Kedoshim
BS Gurari was a banshak. Sadly (I don't want to get into his story here) he did not allow his mother to be buried in her rigthtful spot in Montefiore. I personally heard the phonecall by LG inviting him to have her buried in her spot near her mother and grandmother, and guarantee that no disrespect would be shown (just like respect was shown to him on 7 Adar 5749 which I witnessed and is on video). Umesaymin betoiv!

7 Adar is RASHAGS's Yahrzeit, correct? I heard that Barry came with Satmar bodyguards (someone posted here when we talked about this that he was the one to provide the security). Is it true?

I am happy to hear that the Rayaatz's oldest son in law gets some respect in 770 (achrei Mos kedoshim emor). A hartzigen yasher keyach zu alemen for this nice gesture.
Still why no Mossed in his memory ?
When Mashiach comes all Chassidishe Yume Depagra will remain in force except for Heh Teves.
Reb Tzfania : I spoke to Rebbetzin Gourary several times after her beating. She had NO INTEREST IN BEING BURIED in OLD MONTEFIORE. IT WAS HER IDEA NOT TO BE BURIED THERE. She was well aware of the close relationship of her father with the Munkatcher and chose that feld for her resting place.
Next several Lubavitcher I spoke to told me that they will p.. on her kever if she is buried in Old Montefiore. .
If the rebbe was concerned about Chana's place in Old Montefiore it would be him not the mazkir LG to contact her. After all they are Bais Horav, not some rich jews who would be impressed by LG. But again Barry and Rebbetzin Chanah assured me that no such contact was ever made.Only peole like Lipskar from the Chevre Kaddisha and LG called Barry Gourary.Pray tell me how much a guarantee by LG is worth ?? !!
Too bad that I too was involved in the events of 7 Adar; and Rabbi ISL of Satmar made sure there was a massive police contingent at the cemetary , to prevent any attack . Hopefully he reads this and will elaborate for us on his fine work.Only then did Barry decide to participate in the funeral as he was very fearful of his safety. Nevertheless Reb. Chana did not trust the chassidm whom she gave a mi sheberech in the Russian style AND SHE STAYED IN NEW JERSEY choosing not to attend the funeral of her late husband.
Another book about Heh Teves ! But wait I hear a major Jewish publisher is working on an objective book about the whole court case. Now that should be interesting reading.

Shneur,
Did Hanna say that she would have spoken to the Rebbe? You understand that I disagree with your perception of the whole hey teiveis affair. Obviously, I don't want to get into arichus and rehash. I understand your (and Shimmy's) opinion and disagree. It's a ruchniyusdik inyan. You certainly understand that Rashag threw in the towel early on but they never did so of course what happened happened. Nevertheless (contrary to what the plemenik thought) the Rebbe really believed that the seforim were shayach to the tnu'a. Just like the Rebbe Rashab worked to get all the ksovim. And if you say that's a raya listor (it shows "yerusha") it is also an illustration of the feelings of the Rabbe'im that it should all be together. Bemakom she'amru leha'arich einoi rash'i lekatzer aval ein hazman grama. These are thinking points! Hey Teiveis will be the ultimate Yom Tov celebrated by the driteh shtok when Moshiach comes.....

Barry indicated that if the Rebbe asked him to be "mefane "Chana from Munkatch he would give it very serious consideration, but it would have to cme from the Rebbe himself.
I too do not wish to rehash the whole machlokes (especially when its tam venishlam becol hooffanim). But its clear from my many conversations with born Lubavitcher from 1965-1985 when asked about the library they told me that the daughters have not settled the Yerusha. Was Nechama Dina completely out of the loop when she wrote her will ?
In addition the library could have been kept together and Barry paid for what he and others thought was his chelek. He obviously could care less about the haggada only about the kneidlech.
Yet this was not done and a war was waged ad chorma.
In the end because of some reckless action , Lubavitch had to pay millions to Barry anyway.

Not being a chasid, but being very well acquainted with Lubavitch,
I have no axe to grind with Deutsch or Rasha"g. However, I've read Deutsch's books and he does not impress me as being a good historian at all. He did gather much interesting raw data, but his interpretation and synthesis is weak.
I honestly do not understand why anyone could have contemplated appointing Rashag as rebbe instead of the Admur Rama"sh. I spoke to him in my teens a few times and he did not strike me as being a big talmid chochom. When he came to be menachem ovel R. Schneur Kotler after the passing of his son Meir, z"l, he made a poor impression on the lomdim of Lakewood that were there. I remember him looking around the beis hamidrosh in 770 during his aliyoh l'tora, instead of looking inside as required. He was a laughing stock to the bochurim my age. Shabbos morning he came to Shacharis smelling from perfume or cologn or whatever. He said his maamer shalesh seudos with one leg folded over and while his hand was touching his sock or shoe. One can go on and one. So let's cut out the אחרי מות קדושים.
The late Rebbe, regardless of his problematic hinting that he was moshiach and other issues, was definitely one of the most talented and brilliant people of the past generation and definitely more qualified to be Rebbe than Rashag.
