Gravatar Sorry to say, as I enjoy this blog, but these are stupid comments. Who said the Rebbe was in Vilna. The fact that he was sending a gabbai would indicate that HE WASNT. The impossability of importing lulavim affected Riga also.

The idea of some gabbai checking into Shulchan Aruch Harav after the Brisker Rov said a lulav is a riot. It could have been mishna Berura, the joke is the same.

Gravatar Twistelton-Twistelton, you are a complete moron. Read Rigg's book that tells about this period.

Gravatar And I'll add to twisteltons comments. Even though you are trying to be very medayek in the lashon of this book, the lady could have been crying for cutting down the fresh branches that had taken so long to grow.

The thought of some gabai putting on a show, by looking in a SA harav, is also quite funny.

Gravatar since my comment was censored, I'll modify it. Is this what you concider "propoganda hockers"? At worst it is an inacurate story. What makes you view this story in this way?

Gravatar Palm trees do not grow in Poland. It's too cold there.

The more accurate version of the story of the four minim is told in עובדות והנהגות לבית בריסק. The Birsker was stuck in Warsaw when the war broke out. The Admur Rayatz had obtained a Yanover esrog for the brisker rov. He sent someone to get the Esrog at the Rayatz's house but the messenger found that the house had been bombed and that the Rayatz had moved to another place. It was with great difficulty that the Brisker Rov finally got his esrog. See the sefer itself for more details.

Gravatar Can you provide more details? RAYATZ was in Otvotzk when the war broke, that house was bombed and he escaped to Warsaw where his was HIDING. Then a German officer who was trying to save him found him and his family. How does that fit into the story? It doesn't. In any case whatever was written about Vilno is 100% pure kosher lapesach baloney.

P.S. Vilno is not Poland, and is says "exclusive greenhouse" moron!

Gravatar Before you call someone a moron, at least make sure you know what you're talking about. Vilna belonged to Poland before WWII. They took it away from Lithuania after WWI.

I don't have the book and I'm quoting from memory, so I can't provide more details. The story is probably reliable because the author states that he checked the stories in the book with R. Dovid Soloveitchik.

As for Rigg's book, I'm not convinced that all details there are accurate. He has two versions of scene of the Germans entering the Rayat's house, one with the Germans knocking on the door, the other with Germans kicking in the door.

Gravatar Yes you are right, Vilno belonged to Poland before the war but you made a reference to geographic location in relationship to palms. And in that regard it is obvious that it was Lithuania and a greenhouse to boot. How did you miss the small detail Mr. Demagogue?

As far as Rigg’s description I do not recall two versions (I will check) but it is irrelevant to the conversation at hand. Your story doesn’t make sense, so is the story in the original book I quoted!

Gravatar tzemach
otwock was a suburb of warsaw. probably not much of a journey at all.
thats how it fits into the story.
(i refer you to r. yossel weinbergs blow by blow account of that tishrei)

the vilna reference is obviously inaccurate.

Gravatar Sto, where can one read it and was it esrog or lulav? Chronologically it would make sense as Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 (Tishrei). At the same time Soviet Union annexed Vilno to the rest of Lithuania they owned (Kovno AKA Kaunas was the capital when Poland held on to Vilno).

Germans opened the Russian front and crossed into Brisk (famous Brisk fortress battle) on June 22, 1941.

Gravatar So it was Esrog and not Lulav?
Otwozk and not Vilno?
1939 not 1940?
Palm tree?
Shalcha Oruch Harav?
What is correct in the story?

Gravatar I did not miss the detail. I thought it over before I wrote it, but that's irrevelant to the topic at hand.

The Brisker Rov was in Warsaw when the war broke out together with his son R. Berel. His family had no idea of his whereabouts or what happened for a number of months.

Gut Yom Tov.
