I liked the Aron Kodesh. I thought the wood carvings gave it a exotic middle-eastern flair.

Gravatar Personally, I happen not to like marble in general; for some reason I am especially drawn to things made of wood almost exclusively. (I also, as a rule, don't usually go for big buildings -- although I happen to (surprisingly) like the inside of the Beth-El Shul in Boro Park.)
Tzemach, I was wondering, from an architectural standpoint, what your opinions on the Beis Hamikdash might be...?

Gravatar In general, urban planning and architecture in Israel are of such a LOW standard that the Belzer "beis HaMikdosh" is actually considered a remarkably progressive achievement. That's why it gets a TV spot.

(Part of the problem with shockingly bad planning and construction here is the corruption that rules everything in Israel, but that requires a separate essay.)

And if you don't like fluorescent lighting, you will be very dismayed to see entire residential neighborhoods here lit with this infernal blue-green glow. Not only living rooms and bedrooms, but now there is a spate of (architecturally horrid) Mirpesot Sukkah additions, Sukkah balconies, that are being stuck onto high walls in odd places, always with the ubiquitous fluorescent lighting, attempting to light up the great outdoors and the night sky itself with it's ghastly beams.

The ancient Romans had a sense of esthetics in these matters. It's the 21st century now. Why can't we?

Gravatar It looks like how I imagined 770 would look inside before my first visit to Crown Heights. I was just a little off.
