I daven at this shul whenever I visit my grandmother (who lives nearby) ... it's an obvious target for any number of malcontents.

You don't understand. In most countries, citizenship is a privilege that is only offered to select people. In Israel, citizenship is a punishment which is imposed on people by force. This is the land of Chelm, after all. If you don't experience it yourself, you might not even believe it.
So many things in Israel are anti-logical that it beggars belief that the otherwise illustrious Jews actually run this place. I probably have enough material to start a blog on just this topic. Maybe I should...
