The people in the shul you mentioned are in something like a state of shock -- an incapacitating fear. It is their reaction to the destruction of the way of life they have always known. They are incapable of adapting to the altered situation either by acceptance or rejection.
If someone tries to run away from you every time you "start a simple conversation" with them, they are either afraid of you or afraid of the feelings they have when you give them your attention, or maybe they simply dislike you. Why not ask them why they always try to avoid conversing with you?

Just to add to the first paragraph above: The shul's unsocial, introverted members may be suffering from severe depression, in combination with paralyzing fear, or all by itself. Basically, the ability to think shuts down and the person shifts into auto pilot. Are these people middle-aged or elderly? Someone ought to check on them to make sure they're taking care of themselves (eating, sleeping, etc.) and taking care of their children, if any.

Links in the comments aren't showing. Just a blank space. Maybe it's my computer's problem. If so, it's the first time it's happened.

MarybN: "the ability to think shuts down and the person shifts into auto pilot".. What if not talking about one person but a group of people who are in the majority in their chassidic movement....?
