For starters, Blogs are hard to read on Shabbos.

I think there's a need for both. (In fact, having started a publishing company, I'm betting that there's a need for both.) Blogs get a small, intense audience -- but they don't spread the word beyond that. Books are more fixed, admittedly -- but they also have a broader reach.
